first: anyone gonna see the movie about him? seems good.

second: did anyone else find it weird that a guy who did, for the most part, his own songs for so long, goes ahead and does covers of a lot of different bands? u2, NIN, beatles?

Yes, I will.

And, no, not really. It did three things for him. One, it made him relevent and interesting to a generation who had written him off. Two, it took some of the weight off his shoulders, taking into account that, during the last few years of his life, he wasn't in the best of health, and probably couldn't write much. And, three, it showcased his ability to make any song his own.

Johnny did a LOT of cover songs in his career. "Ring of Fire" was a pretty big hit for him. And his fucking wife wrote it.

Johnny Cash and the Tennessee Two is my favorite band. :D
The movie looks like crap. They couldn't find anyone better than Reese and Joaquin? Fuck.
He did lots of covers, it just wasn't until late in his career they were released as singles more often than his originals.

Johnny Cash was a god and I will definitely be seeing this movie. It's funny my parents and people of their generation make fun of me for listening to Cash becaue that's what their parents listened to. They just don't get how BADASS he is (even in death he could kick my ass) Of course they grew up on John Denver, James Taylor and other hippie wusses like that

my parents listen to crazy ass croatian music, so we're almost in the same boat.

Yeah, I'm all over the movie.

And yeah, when Cash does the covers though, it almost seems like he's putting his own unique stamp on it. I mean look what he did with 'Hurt'. He turned a pretentious and annoying 90's Goth teen anthem into something that was just absolutely, painfully beautiful. That's just a statement on the magic of Cash.

I know that Cash hand picked Joaquin and that the Carters were happy with the film.

I loved every cover he did on his last album. His voice just made every song original.

But "The Man Comes Around" is still the best song on there. And he wrote that.

I'll probably see the movie.

You forget that a lot of his best songs were covers. Folk songs in general had anonymous creators, he just did his spin on a lot of them. In one of the prison CDs, he sung a song a prisoner wrote. I also know that Shel Silverstein wrote the lyrics for my favorite Cash song: A Boy Named Sue, so this doesn't surprise me at all.

I'm rooting for the film, but have to admit I'm nervous that it could be bad, just cause it looks a little too pretty , given the real cash-carter story.

as for the man doing so many covers at the end of his career... no big deal.

as others have pointed out many signature cash songs were written by others, not just June, but waylon Jennuings, Kris Kristoferson, etc.

plus as an artist Cash had already done scores of albums where he was singer songwriter producer.

the american sessions are a real facinating look at Cash's interpretations of those modern songs.

I love his version of "Personal Jesus".

He really did what few artists can, making these covers his own, through his style and presntation.

the guy was a genius.

Honestly, well more than half of his material were reconfigurings of traditional folks songs, including his 'originals.' The rock and roll stuff was just him taking the same methodology to popular songs.

And here's hoping the movie doesn't suck. It's actually one of the few great romances of modern history.

When he started playing music, most artists did mostly covers.

Johnny Cash is the man.

Covers or not, doesn't matter, because he was the man.

I concur. Doing covers let him be a musician, without draining the energy he needed to survive. And he still came out with a really great album.

Definitely gonna see the movie. I love Johnny and the film is generating quite a buzz so it's really a no brainer for me.

As for the covers...I understand why he did so many of them late in his career but, for me, they were kinda...depressing. They seemed like a desperate attempt to appeal to a younger audience and, really, none of them struck an emotional chord for me. At that point in his life, he had such a wealth of life experience to draw from that it would have been interesting to hear more originals that expressed all the things he was no doubt wrestling with in his later years. I understand that his health woes restricted his ability to write and the cover tunes were the best artistic outlet available to him but, for me, they fell flat.
