When I do how-to panels at cons, I like to have everyone bring in examples of their work, and we go over them together. It helps if you can see your own work and deconstruct it and find better ways of doing it. I think that's the best way for all of us to get better.

So, from now on, this is the place to post your work for discussion.

My only request is that, in discussing the work of others, you try to focus on the positives. It doesn't help anyone to point out all the things they they do wrong - especially because it's usually only a matter of opinion. There's a difference between offering constructive criticism and simply criticizing something. I will use my mod powers to delete and/or edit posts that are too critical.

By the way - I want to see sequential artwork here, as much as possible.

this is a really good idea for a topic. There is some realy awesome work being put forth by fans here. I spent some time looking through Avid/np-need's da gallery and you have some pretty sweet work up. I like you Urakhai and batman drawings but I espicially like your water-colours. Those pieces look really well done, the DD one espicially has a dark tone created through your use of colours and blotching. great work :)

Hi everyone. This is my first post here and I thought I'd post in the art thread since that is what I do. Below are some examples of recent work of mine. I just sent out the sequentials below as submissions to 7 comic book companies hoping to get work. I've spent the last year as a freelance toy designer doing work for Toy Biz, but now I'm changing focus. Anyways, enough of my story  here is the art...

I suppose this is cheating to fit in as "sequential", as it is a comic page, but a title splash as well. Actually, this specifically is a marker rough on a print-out of the pencils. I think I've made enough excuses...

Hi.

First, I have to say that I really enjoy your work Michael.

Just helped some students with some illustrations for the Intro-Sequence in their short movie about a Norwegian superhero that lives in the sewer.

Here are the illustrations and the sequence in QT-format0(it is not 100% yet, they are finetuning it these days)

http://www.olahaldor.net/shite/slides.jpg

Heres the clip:

They where all done in two evenings. There are some details I would like to have redrawn if I had the time.

What do you think?

Best, Raymond.

Michael, I'm a huge fan of your work. I met you last year at the WizardCon in Chicago where I had a great conversation about the materials you use to ink with. It really was a watershed. I tried those pentel brush pens, and they've revolutionized the way I draw -- and has help me loosen up a bit (though I'm not where I want to be yet. Thanks for the sketch, by the way.

I know you prefer sequentials, and I'll have some in a couple days, but I had some images of some work I did for an independent publisher that I'd like your feedback on (and anyone else's too, of course).

As promised, I'm uploading some sequentials. It's only a six page story, so I'm uploading the whole thing. It's a radical departure from the superhero stuff, but it's nice to try to tell a story where there are only two people in one room -- and still make it visually interesting.
http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k142/RayRieck/POcover.jpg

The story is completely lettered, but I left the dialogue out so it wouldn't distract from the sequentials themselves.

Nice work! Good storytelling! I like the inking style on this stuff better than anything else. I love the looseness of it.

The first panel on the second-to-last page is a bit awkward - that's just a tough angle to read, and it's the ONLY panel that hung me up for a second. It's not a deal-breaker, the rest of the story is really strong, but it's the kind of think you might want to watch out for in future work.

Well, demand has forced me back onto photoshop for the first time in 6 years, as I'm doing more for print & web. I recently redesigned a band's website & did their whole CD jacket. These are sequentials, if you count each frame as a panel (there were 6 total to illustrate a song).

For instance, I've been digitally inking everything for 2 months now, & I'm drawing several elements on seperate layers & joining them later. I miss the big, inky pools on original pages, but less time & very easy editting are bonuses.
Something a little more sequential--I'm not real happy with the res on this page mock-up, but it fits on the screen better.

Thanks a lot-- the cleanliness has a lot to do with me using a higher res version rather than pulling it from the magazine's website, & yeah I decided to not be so "creative" with the colors. I haven't been working in full color very long & I usually dislike my own palette choices. Shading & modelling aren't a problem, just my retarded grasp of color theory.

Its Friday & I got to looking through old stuff to see how much work I've actually done in the last 7 years. Before my kids were born I could finish 3 comic pages in a day, so sometimes I feel like they hold me back... until I look at the paying gigs I had back then. Here's one of my earliest commission pieces.

Sorry it took me so long to get back to you on these - been crazy busy!

The pages look good - are you planning to ink them yourself? What about balloon placements (they seem awfully tight - I can't imagine where the balloons are going to go)? I can't say much until I know those things.

But I do have one comment on the last two pages, and that is to watch your head sizes - they're all more or less the same, which makes things a bit static. Try to vary them a bit - get a mix of close-ups, medium shots, and long shots. And I wish there was an establishing shot there - I'm not sure where the person on the sofa came from.

Yeah, its mostly silent-- only 4 word balloons. I always see these as being more about the SFX & facial expressions. I used to hand-letter everything, but these are good practice at special lettering effects...plus I can write, draw, ink, letter & color the whole thing before my kids are home from school.

I have something new. Sadly, no sequentials yet, but I wanted to get some objective looks at some character studies I'm doing for a new series I'm working on (no plugs for the book here, I promise). I'm trying to make each character unique & expressive but I don't want anyone to just look at it & think its just a Law & Order comic or something.

Nice work, Diana! Are those just pencils? Some of the line work may be difficult to reproduce, because it's so fine - just something to think about as you proceed.

I'd also encourage you to get a bit more energy into a drawing like the second one. There's nothing WRONG with it - it looks f-ing great. But if you can apply some of the energy of the pose to your actual drawing of it, if you can put more energy into YOURSELF as you draw it, it will translate down to the page and make the finished piece that much better.

Remember that DRAWING is a VERB. The act of doing the drawing is just as - if not MORE - important as the final piece of artwork is. What you do, how you feel, as you draw, is going to inform the final work. That's one of the things that makes Kirby's work stand out so much - the raw, over-the-top, almost manic energy that he put into each page is something you can sense in the lines and poses.

Diana
11-18-2006, 03:31 PM
WOW! That's some great feedback! Thank you!!!

Reproduce as in inking? This is actually a digital drawing so I could easily make those lines thicker, if that makes the job of the colourist easier.

I guess a lot of the energy gets lost since I work while zooming in to about 400%... and the drawing is actually twice this size. HERE (http://www.sailorgalleries.com/personal/drawings/senshi_p02_05.jpg) is the full size.

I did actively try to make the lines very smooth and now I see what you mean... it't not very dynamic. But whenever I tried not fixing the lines too much the individual lines looked better, more dynamic, but the overall drawing suffered. I am just not practised and confident enough to run with it I guess so I go in and "fix" it.

Another thing I have no clue about is colouring. I don't intend to do it myself, but I don't know what level of detail colourists want. Some of those very fine lines are meant to be guidelines for shading. Others were me trying to give a sense of importance and possibly material.

Your feedback is much appeciated!! Especially since the internet is the only source of feedback I have. Thank you!

Seth
11-18-2006, 10:14 PM
Diana, I'm sure you'ld prefer feedback from Michael but I had the same problems & concerns holding me back. As far as what a colorist may "want" out of your drawing, don't worry about it too much as you're drawing-- colorists are pro artists too & don't need everything dumbed-down or spelled out for them.

As to line thickness & energy, my easy solution was to reduce the original size I was working at. I would probably have to use the 10 x 15" page if I were drawing something like the Avengers, but for most projects a smaller size makes it easier for me to get that energy in the drawing, & also the right amount of intimacy in those close-ups.
Sometimes I have to do an odd panel on a seperate sheet to really fit the info in, but it all gets scanned in anyway, right? (note: I haven't completely converted to seperating all the panels yet, as I still like to really look at each page's 'flow'... before I scan it in & change it!)
I know most people won't want to work at print size, & I'll probably change my method several more times over the next decade.

Michael Lark
11-19-2006, 08:43 AM
Seth - oddly enough, I like to work smaller, too, at least when I'm penciling. Right now, with Stefano pretty much inking me, I'm penciling on 9 x 12 paper and then he enlarges it and prints out blue-lines to ink from. Sometimes I like to ink on the smaller pages - for me, it stops me from getting so anal about the details.

Yeah, as Seth says, don't worry about the colorist. Your job is to make the black and white art look good. If it doesn't look good in black and white, it won't look good in color. Some of those fine lines are gonna get lost when you shrink that art down to print size, that's the only thing I meant about that.

As far as the energy goes, sounds like you're on the right track. Just keep practicing, and try not to think too much as you draw. Let your brain wander off on an errand while you're drawing. Just use your eyes and your hand as much as you can, and that energy will be there before you know it.

Micheal-- I use 9 x 12" paper, too. Another benefit for everyone to consider: smaller is cheaper! (same holds true when buying drinks for a midget, FYI).

Seth, loved those faces btw. I wish I could get that much expression with as few a well placed lines like that.

springer - crap! I really love your stuff. Now why is there no link to your website or something in your sig?

Marv, love the colours! Though is it possible the layer with the "ink" for the guy to the right dropped underneath the colours? it's not proper black, which looks weird to me.

Here we go: A beta of my first serious sequential page. Still thinking about what to do with the backgrounds...

http://www.sailorgalleries.com/personal/drawings/senshi_p002beta.jpg

Your final sequencial page looks great!! Are you planning on colouring it yourself, getting someone else to do it or leaving it as is.... I know some artists that bitch when they've finished a great inked page and the first comment they get is "when ya gonna colour it?"
anyway,
Thanks for the comment on my pic... I'm not sure exactly why the blacks went a bit wrong on the secong figure... Each guy was drawn in Illustrator then brought together, and I think I chose different blacks.
Hope to see more of your stuff soon!

I don't intend to colour it myself. Need to master the art of b/w before having a go at the colours as well! I don't want to split my focus. So I'll probably have it coloured by someone else.

I will try to shade it some though. Just not sure whether to finish the "ink" of all pages and then start shading, or whether to completely finish one page first. I fear that the individual pages will look too different if I do that.

This page will have taken me 2 weeks to finish, once I finish it at the weekend. But I am zooming out and drawing more freely now than I did yesterday and the day before so I hope I'll have this printed by summer next year. :)

Marv, now that is fantastic. Nice inking, kept it loose enough, & the color choices are great. To me, an expression like that says more than any dialogue balloon (sorry to all the writers out there).

Its all a lot of talking, but you can sometimes be a bit more creative in those scenes than in action sequences. Most of all, I'm trying to vary my page layouts as almost every page of this has 5 panels... which could stagnate rather quickly.

I love that Lon Chaney; something about his expression & the way he's resting his hand makes me think he's tired of waiting for the bus or nervous about hearing the results from a recent doctor's appointment.

Anyway, I should probably just get more of this book done but I'm proud of this particular panel so...
http://www.abnormalcomics.com/images/shots.jpg
The script really only called for the central figure in this shot, & spread the action out to later panels. But, I wanted to generate more of a sense of rounds wizzining past one's head (I still need to add spent casings bouncing off the door, etc. but I was asked to refrain from too much gore).

How the hell do make a few lines n shadows look like detailed faces!?!

How the hell do make a few lines n shadows look like detailed faces!?!

Try squinting:-x -- seriously, I have horrible eyesight & can only see shapes without corrective lenses. I used to draw all the planes of every shape, so everyone came out looking like Iceman or something. But in the end I learned a lot about how light catches objects & shadows define them.
http://www.abnormalcomics.com/images/525_IceStatue.jpg
I also used to draw very detailed & now I always sketch with a small marker-- I'd rather make mistakes in sketches than spend time erasing 'em, & the marker forces you to make the most of every line.
http://www.abnormalcomics.com/images/600_PHANTOM.jpg

So, try working small (Michael & I both draw entire pages at 9 x 12") & make yourself sketch with a felt tip pen for awhile- you won't have room for mistakes!

Whatever you're comfortable with is cool; I just get too hung up on details when there's too much room, & I start drawing everything at the same scale. I find proportion & perspective much easier at the smaller size too, though I admit my thumbnails are never bigger than a baseball card.

Its been 2 years since I've had real sequential work printed but I'm working on something right now & slightly nervous about it. I'm not really comfortable with promoting anything of my own here either, as its Michael's forum, but the penciled pages I posted here are the start of the series I'm working on.

I couldn't even speculate at this point. Its partly an experiment on my part, as to what productivity level I can maintain with a 5 & 3 yr old :blah:, & partly determined by the project itself-- at this point its a 4 issue series & by the time I'm done with all 4, who knows...

I should probably add that I'm also inking, coloring & lettering the whole thing. Its been over 5 years since I've taken on anything of this scope/ magnitude. I've gotten used to working really hard for 1 month & then taking a week off before starting another different small project, but my goal has always been getting a regular book so I've gotta throw my hat in the ring now if I want that 2 years from now. :scared:

A point to think about on that page: I kinda had the feeling the guy that dropped the grenade also got blown up (I assume he's meant to be in the car leaving in the last panel). Because of the way time is passing in the first three panels the last panel is reading like it takes place a split second after panel three.

This may be cleared up when you add dialogue/captions.

Looks great otherwise.

Yeah, I had that sense too when I first read the script. I'm thinking of spacing 3 & 4 out more in the final, maybe a bigger gutter. Thanks for helping me decide on that; I knew this one was gonna be a hurdle.

..are you writing as well as doing everything else?

I'm drawing, lettering & coloring... & oh yeah, covers too... but not writing.
I've written a number of scripts myself but its just too many plates to keep spinning in the air right now. Its also too easy to rewrite as you go if you're doing it all, & then there's the whole issue of shopping a book around after you're done.

I already have 2 projects of my own in progress to propose after this one's done, so hopefully this one will get my hat in the ring & I'll be able to bring someone else in to help letter & color the next ones.

Hi, Angel-- I like those eyes you have at the top.
From my own experience, working from print-outs is just fine but its better to deconstruct them. I still draw stick figures & armitures even when I'm working from referrence.

Try printing out a light, maybe black & white copy of an image you really like & just draw right on top of it; find the geometric forms that make up the shape of a character or object.

The finished drawing is what you like, but it needs a stable structure. Imagine your dreamhouse with the perfect colored facade & the right amount of detail in the window casings; but its only a real structure that you can live in because of the cinder block foundations & plain stud frame walls. That's the skeleton of the building, & the drywall & flooring is like muscle & connective tissue. The shingles, siding, garage door, etc are only surface details like skin, hair & wrinkles. Everything underneath is what makes it a ranch style A-frame or a 2 story colonial.

I still fuck up a lot, but I never erase-- I wanna see my exact mistakes later.

(BTW, I worked in construction when I was in school so sorry for the analogy.)

Establishing shots can be pretty tricky, especially when the script allows little room before moving on. I'm always weary of it looking like a scene from a sitcom or something-- one shot of the outside of the Brady household, & then 22 minutes of interior shots. I also worry about using the same kind of shot over & over.

I like the top, pencil-only one. The only thing I'd say is that you pencilled it in the same way that you ink. Can you go looser with the pencils?

Of course, I never got on board with the iron spider-- it eliminates all of the fluidity that I love about Spiderman.

Of course, I never got on board with the iron spider-- it eliminates all of the fluidity that I love about Spiderman.

I see what you're saying; I often pencilled very loosely, with the inks dictating the majority of the final feel of my art. This is something that I'm trying to abandon, and I've found that as I do more stuff in the new style my pencils get looser and more fluid. Already I've noticed a greater feeling of kinesis in my new style in comparison to the inked stuff, and I think that that particular aspect shows when you look at the two pieces that I posted. I'll post new stuff in this thread and will use the crits to hone my new direction.

The biggest thing that I've noticed with my stylistic shift is the difference in production time; the Spidey/Venom piece took ten hours to do, whereas the black costume Spidey took only an hour. This makes me very happy, and I believe that I could produce 22 pages in about two weeks or less with this new approach.

Next piece will be classic Spidey in a crouch.

I like this one too, but his legs are awkward- they have a little bit of a Liefeld thing going on... but with feet. Its just an unnatural pose, mostly.

I like Spidey because he tucks & flips & all that stuff that flying characters don't do. In his case, it looks weird to me when he's standing around with other characters. (Part of that may be his costume, which I can't seem to draw well.)

With Spiderman, you can cheat & avoid drawing his legs.

So, hi, everyone, and hi Michael. This is my first post here and i hope i'm not breaking any rules but i was just so excited to finally be able to put my work to the test that i couldn't wait no more.

First of, i'd like to say how i admire Michael's impressionistic artwork. There are always those pencillers on a comic book that make you buy it no matter what, and you are one of the few.

And second, i'd like to thank you and Brian Michael Bendis to at least give the aspiring new pencillers, inkers and colorists a shot to know from the best how they are doing. I am brazillian, and unlike most americans, i know what lack of oportunity is (especially when it comes to art).

Well, here goes nothing:

Back to the Roots: It's SAILORMOON!!! :D

Well, every few months or so I get back into the "zone" and into the mood for drawing. And then there is no stopping me! For a few days... let's hope this one lasts longer than the last!

Here is the latest. It's a close-up of a larger piece I am working on.

(If it's too large let me know and I'll upload a smaller version...)

I like it, Diana. Nice simplification, and the line work is very bold and strong. You chose the right lines to leave in. Except maybe for the nose, where you seemed to get a bit more timid. Noses are HARD AS FUCK to draw - I fuck them up all the time!

What if you simplified the color, and made it look a little less digitized, a bit more flat? I think that shiny digital sheen in the colors is detracting a bit from an otherwise awesome piece. I bet you can make it even better, and save yourself some work on the NEXT one. :)

Springer, the Batman pieces are interesting. I quite like the second one. Something about the first one doesn't quite work as well, but I can't put my finger on WHAT, so maybe it's just me. Seth's right, it WOULD be cool to see some covers like that.

I can see what you mean with the nose! I just took out two of those lines and it looks much better already! Should have just left it to the shading... mostly.

You know... it took me somewhere between 20-30 hours to finish this so saving myself some work sounds good!! :D
Though some practise might do the job just fine, too! :surrend:

This is the only way I know to colour and leaving the colours more flat has never even occurred to me! I can see what you mean!
If this wasn't an anime/manga thing I wouldn't have gone so over the top with it. I quite like it for this genre, but I wanna draw something closer to real life, once I have finished this series of four drawings, and then I'll try the flats. :)

Actually, while re-reading this... it's the lineart that tends to bring out my digital colouring style... I first started this piece with NO lineart and it looked quite different. More flat. more realistic. I shall try that in future, but I don't like drawing the same piece twice...

Thinking about it... I am waaay too dependent on the airbrush for shading... Reducing the use of that and defining the shaded areas more should also get rid of the digital feel...

*ramble, ramble*
Thanks for the comments! Very inspiring! :)

Hey Diana, have you used markers (like Copics, etc) to color before? I always do a marker rough before going to the computer; if I go straight to digital painting then I'm using the airbrush for 20 hours also! I like having a more simple plan in front of me & I've never spent more than 1 hour on a marker rough.

Of course, your rendering on that picture is damn near virtual reality & waaay better than I can do so... my advice only applies if you want to simplify/ flatten/ save time.:-?

Hey Diana, have you used markers (like Copics, etc) to color before? [...]

Actually, I own a few Copics, but never really got the hang of it. I don't have a lot of patience for learning new things unfortunately.

But I already got a plan on how to colour my next piece digitally. Since I wrote my last post my brain has been processing the information from your previous posts - without me even noticing - and now that I think about drawing again I have a whole new strategy in mind! Funny how that works.

Michael Lark
04-24-2007, 09:01 AM
Diana - I think you're spot on about the airbrushing. It DOES tend to be overused by less experienced colorists. Matt Hollingsworth noted that it's important to not use TOO much of a range of values, as well. That's what tends to make things look "shiny" - though I don't really see you doing that here. Just because you CAN use the airbrush and grads doesn't mean you SHOULD. Look at Marko's covers on the new DD issues (or any of his covers for that matter) - he's doing those all in PShop, and they don't look digital at all.

All of that said, I don't think you should spend any more time on this piece - it's nice work, let it go. Apply what you've learned to the next one and keep moving forward. I've seen a HUGE growth in your work since you started showing it here, and it's really exciting! Keep moving onward and upward.

Hi Michael,

I don't get to post often, but I love reading the threads and looking at everyone's art. I posted some sequentials a number of months ago (see page 6 of this thread), and you gave me some great feedback. I'm working on another story, and have a rough scan of one of the pages. I'd love to get some of your feedback on this new stuff. I've started encorporating a grey brush pen into my work which has been a lot of fun.

The the Pentel brush pen -- the same one that I use for the blacks that Michael turned me onto when I talked to him at '05's WizardCon Chicago. They make color brush pens which are exactly the same except with different pigments. I bought the grey one (right now, they only make one shade of grey).

Cool. I have a set of 6 shades of the Pitt Brush pens, 3 cool grey & 3 warm, but they coat the paper pretty heavily- I still need to get used to them, but I've used the black one a lot so I'll get there. I really want to get the sepia set too.

Its impressive that you get such good brushwork on comic art boards. I can't stand those things- I'd rather work on typing paper 'cuz at least its cheap as well as shitty.

Nice. I'd say about half-way in-between leaning towards the bottom. I like the roughness of it. But if you go too far with it, it might get hard to read. I really like things with a bit of a rough edge. Too much just looks sloppy. Obviously, I see Lark's influence on your approach -- and he's certainly a master at it.

Seth
04-26-2007, 02:17 PM
Thanks Ray. I don't have Stefano inking me (slacker!) but I'm trying to retain some of the grit of my pencils. I'll probably settle somewhere in the middle but its taking a while to establish. Guess I should send both to my colorist & see what happens.

FYI- the Lark look largely comes from using the same tools & materials, mostly listed in the "pens" thread (I suck at hotlinking) & I ink on watercolor paper.
