After cleaning my studio, I started doing water color work again today. It's going better than I expected.

I'm glad to hear that, Tommy.

One of these days i'll settle on a style... Still experimenting for now.

The "ink" lines are kinda sloppy... Sorry about that...

Your stuff keeps getting better and better, Daniel. I actually like the "sloppy" inks.

I've started up a sketchblog of sorts with (mostly) daily updates if anyone feels like checking it out:

Jason Baroody, That Clea piece a few pages back is seriously cool.

Seth, Johnny Wadd comics... a bizarrely genius idea. And a great cover.

And here's something I drew last week. This was one of the few non-sketchcard pieces I've drawn in the past year:

Oh, and Hack, that one right there is seriously cool.

The car is perfect, and i also dug very much the shadows and the tentacles. Great drawing.

Hey, thanks. Glad you dug it. Usually, I remind people of 1930's-40's pulp art. But I've been looking at a lot of 70's Alex Nino comics lately, so maybe it's seeping in though osmosis.

Dude... That there's one heck of a drawing, man! Daredevil is really nimble, lively, and the shadows work for a nice grim look to the whole thing. I loved the background too - not only is it awesomely detailed, the perspective you chose really gives it an edge of warpedness, which adds up great to the general feel of the piece.

P.S.: I know i didn't usually get so deep in analysis, but i'm trying to haul some substance to my arguments now. I have no REAL expertise in fine arts knowledge so if i end up being pedantic, please forgive me and let me know =)

This was a College end of year project for an exhibition. It's not the norm I know but it's sequential art. This was a fan project for me as i'm a Dr Who fan myself.

So this year we got to write our own brief so I decided to re-tell and old story. I chose Little Red Riding Hood and went for a horror angle. I knew kids would be there though (at the exhibition)so I did it as an episode of Doctor Who that way I could be scary but kids could still see it.

I began by studying the story and watching lots of Dr Who episodes old and new. I then wrote a script and began pencilling. I used my town as a backdrop and the majority of my class as cast members. I then inked (horribly) and then went on Gutterzombie and learnt as much as possible,I also looked at comic colourists I liked and tried to come up with my own style. I'd never done more than flat and gradients before so this was all new.

In hind sight i'd like to redo a lot of the pencils but thats what a deadlines there for I guess. However we did get in the local paper and in the Guardian apparently (I haven't seen the Guardian article).

I was suprised to see my comic get a queue of people for most of the night lol. Also lots of little kids came up to me and told me how much they liked it and how scary the monster was. One even told me it should be published lol. I also had adult comic fans come talk to me and the praise was pretty cool.

Now I know i'm not pro level,i'm far from it but i'm on the right path maybe and i'll keep working on my weaknesses and draw everyday and maybe someday i'll realize my dream.

For now though the sight of kids being torn away from it at the end of the night by parents was a great feeling.

They were displayed in A3 frames and I cleaned the pages up a bit from what you're about to see. I hope you guys like it and I appreciate any comments I value you're opinions. I'm pretty new here. The work will follow...

CaptainBritain
06-30-2008, 03:59 PM
Hey Arion, this was the only episode I did as it was for a college project. I had never done computer lettering before only hand written stuff. For me the trick was to make sure it made sense by varying the height and making sure it mostly reads from left to right.

Also go away from your page and do something else and come back and read it. If you can read it how you intended it to be without getting confused then more than likely other people will.

I'm by no means an expert, like I said I suck at most things but thats how I learn I guess. Another thing you can do to help is keep a comicbook by your side and see how the panels flow together.

Hope this helps and cheers for the feedback.

Another one unfinished that will maybe just stay that way due to my incredible laziness:

http://img56.imageshack.us/img56/4412/1984speechcopywu7.jpg

It's a scene from 1984 (the book, haven't watched the film), when the guy from the inner party is giving a speech on hate week about the atrocities done by Oceania's foes, the Eurasia.

First and only episode? Did you ever think of making another one?

Thanks a lot for your suggestions. There is a comic book contest in my college, and I was thinking about adapting a short story I wrote for classes into a 6 or 7 page comic. This is the first time I do something like this.

My first time posting on these forums. Here's a five-page preview up my upcoming comic book "Night Business." It's an homage/satire of late-night 80s cable TV and 70s Italian thrillers known as Giallo. Take a look. Thanks man. It took a while to figure out (and to get the lead out of my ass to actually start it), but actual drawing time wasn't too bad. I just did a similar piece in about 4-5 days for a Marvel book. And Darrow is the ultimate badass in the detail department, nobodies ever going to touch that guy. I have to have the occasional disapearing background just to get close to hitting a deadline.

You're welcome. I never get tired of drawing, but I know I have to stop because I have more serious stuff to take care of. Did you use photo-reference for body positions? I find it really hard to draw something without support. I need to have a pic (taken by myself usually), to have an idea of proportion and stuff. And the final result is never good, but at least is not extremely bad.

No, I actually get knocked for anatomy more than anything else, whenever you compare my stuff to the real pose of someone doing what I'm drawing...it's never close. I really don't use more than basic shapes when I build figures and just focus on the basic rules of proportion. I treat figures on the page like action figures. I look at drawing now as I looked at playing with action figures when I was a kid, moving and posing them...just kind of playing on paper instead of physically playing with a toy. Thats the joy in drawing for me. Not very artsy fartsy, but fun none the less. It works well with the cartoony/detailed style. It's easy to place figures in/within an environment if you break them down into basic shapes. I just plug them in like they were a chest of draws or anything else. And then I go back in and tilt them to show body language, and break them down further adding clothing, accessories, and then a corresponding facial expression. Approaching comic work like that has it's down falls too, b/c cartoony work isn't the highest in demand,a colorest has more control over the final out come of the look of the art(which can be great, or not so great)....and my faces get really rubbery sometimes and it's a struggle for me to keep likeness's consistant.

That's very interesting. I used to play with action figures too, of course. But it never occurred to me to use them as inspiration.
I gotta say you have a natural ability. I think your work is amazing, and I know there is no way I could draw a simple body without having a lot of graphic reference or a model in front of me.

Good luck with your contest,it's definitely worth a shot. I mean you'll get valuable practice and deadline experience with it. Good luck and hopefully you'll post what you've done i'd love to see it.

I know I don't have the ability to change the way I draw. Drawing is something I can barely do, takes a lot of effort and the result would only be fitting for a low selling neglected 40s title.

However, I think the story might be good so I'll give it a shot. Besides I don't think I'll be competing against that many people. I am going for an 8 pages story, based on short story I wrote for a narrative class a couple of years ago.
