That is one beautiful page man, your stuff is perfect for this title. Two questions Mike:

1- Who will be doing your colors on this book? PLEASE tell me Pantazis.

2- Will you be doing the covers as well, or wil there be a new cover atist? Personally, I would love to see doing your own covers, and then BEG Marvel to let Isonove color them. That would be TITS.

Sorry, you lose on all counts.

The amazing Frank D'Armata is coloring the book. He amazed me with the work he did on Cap, and I begged for him. We're going to be discussing the pallette and stuff soon, but I plan on pushing him in a moody, atmospheric direction.

The covers I'm still not sure about. I think Marvel wants to get someone who can paint. I know of the one name that's been tossed around, and I don't think he'll disappoint - he's one of my favorite artists. The question is whether or not he'll have time. More than that I can't say, yet.

Sorry to disappoint you.

Johnny C. TheLastHorseman
10-06-2005, 07:52 PM
Oh no, you didn't disappoint me at all man, D'Armatta's stuff is gorgeous, that guy could never disappoint. I just thought of Pete because I think his stuff with your stuff sets a good mood, and a fitting one of this book, but Frank is a great fit as well. I'm sure Marvel will put the right guy on covers (although, I will say that I kinda think that the fully-painted cover is starting to get a tad overused) it's just that when I saw that page (in this thread) I automaticlly picured it with Isonove's coloring and I sprouted wood.

Believe me man, NOTHING about this book is going to disappoint. Back when I first heard that Bendis and Alex's run was wrapping up, I was like "well I guess that'll be a good point to stop reading this title." Then I heard that you and Ed were taking over, and that damn well changed my mind right 'round.

I've heard good things about that also... I'm more of a Marvel exclusive though. But I'll make a deal with you. If the first comic is as good as that preview picture there, I'll get Gotham Central.

You're a Marvel exclusive? I didn't know they had contracts for fans now. That's nuts. :D

But seriously, you're missing some fantastic comics if all you're buying are Marvel books. Gotham Central being only one example, but there's a whole world of books outside the big two worth checking out. If you're not into indy books, at the very least, pick up some Vertigo books now and then.

If you can't afford the GC trades, take a couple hours off and give them a read in the comic shop or Barnes & Noble for free.

He's right, you know. Buying only Marvel books is like saying you only buy music from Sony recording artists or something, or you only see movies from Universal Studios, or you only buy books published by Penguin. Doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

That rules, Michael. Ya know, initially, I was kinda disappointed to hear that you and Bru were gonna be the new DD team. Not because I wasn't a fan of your work or anything. It's just that, well, after Bendis and Maleev's outstanding, lengthy run on the book, I wanted something that would offer a significant stylistic departure from what they did ('cause I like a lot of variety in my books) and I didn't think that you and Brubaker would provide that. I'm not saying that you and Brubaker don't have your own styles, but there are some stylistic similarities between what you guys do and what Maleev and Bendis do. I expected a smooth transition into more gritty, street level DD stories but no real change in the direction of the stories or the look of the comic. However, your preview art and the stuff I've read in interviews has me thinking that we will see some significant changes in the book. As much as I enjoyed the Bendis/Maleev run, I want a new creative team that will shake things up a bit and leave their mark on this book and it appears that you guys want to do that. Can't wait to check out your stuff.

For me, personally, the colors are a bit harsh. One of the reasons we colored the page the way we did is because the rendering is all done in the black and white work - the colors needed to be more subtle so they didn't overpower the inks. Also, Frank didn't have to do much rendering in the color since it was all done in the black and white. The fx are kept to a bare minimum. Give it another go, and try scaling those colors back in their inensity and see if it doesn't come out a little stronger.

First, I gotta say it is SO COOL of you to even respond to this flagrant intrusion on your work. I really enjoyed playing in your sandbox, and I hope it's cool with you. I of course concede completely that you and Frank's version is about 7 million times better than mine and [Wayne's World] I'm not worthy! I'm not Worthy![/Wayne's World] :D This is only the second time I've ever tried to do any coloring so any and all suggestions are completely welcome.

So I revisited my version with your comments in mind and toned down the colors (Set the color fill layers to 55% transparency, and decreased the Saturation by 30%) It looked really dark, so I decreased the transparency of the shadows that I added by about 30%. Here's the result:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v651/gelf13/DD082-color-by-AG2.jpg

Not too bad. Definately an improvement, but it's still not there. Something about the skin tone bothers me, but it seems to have more menace in the DD dropping out of the rain. I thought of artificially brightening up the letters on his chest, to make them stand out more, but I figured that would be too heavy handed. Thoughts?

I agree - that's a definite improvement! I also agree about the skin tones. Hmmm. You know, you might want to do some searching on-line - I know that there are a bunch of places where you can find swatches of colors and pallettes to use for things like this. Skin tones are the hardest, and I know there're bunches of them out there.

Something else to consider is that you don't HAVE to color the skin tones realistically. Setting a mood sometimes requires taking artistic liscense. Check out my cover to Gotham Central #9 (I think). We used all blue tones for everthing except the orange prison uniform. Including blue skin. (If you do something like that well, it won't look like a Smurf.)

Glad you had fun!

OK, here's the problem. the image is 1006 kb at 1024x768. Photobucket will resize anything over 512 kb. What do I do?

EDIT:

OK, now I'm getting annoyed. I resized it in Photoshop, and my computer shows the size to be 472 kb. Fine. But when i upload it into Photobucket, they still resize it to half size. GRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!

EDIT AGAIN:

OK. They don't tell you that, by default, they have the max pic size set at 256 kb instead of the allowed 512 kb. But I finally got it figured out.

So now, there are some brand spanking new wallpapers available to you, at 800x600, 1024x768, and 1152x864.
