Hey Michael,

it's been a while. A few years back we emailed for a while and I showed you some off my work.

I've recently finished my new story, and visually it's inspired by your current work. Ever since I bought a page from your Gotham Central run it's been itching to try something like that myself. And this is the end result.

The complete story will be online next month at pulpdeluxe.be. I'll give a heads up when it's posted.

But here's a little preview:

I believe 'Leuven' sounds a whole lot better than 'Louvain', that's all.
I also much prefer 'Liège' or 'Namur' instead of 'Luik' and 'Namen', if you'd like to know. :)

Are you from Brussel or Bruxelles? ;)

I can relate. :)

I was really looking forward to his Powers pages. Too bad his daughter thought differently. :D

Kristof -

Nice work, man! I REALLY like the title page - it has a sort of rougher quality to it that I think works better than the smoother aspects of the rest of the pages. Not that there's anything wrong with them. I think it's just cause you're using ONLY black shapes most of the time, and the rougher quality of the title page gives some added texture that may be missing from the story pages.

Don't ever underestimate the value of texture. I think I did, A LOT, in my earlier work. But I've found, as I've gotten a bit more experienced, that the texture adds a lot to the work, to the visual interest of the page, to the readability. I think you can do it without compromising your style.

Of course, that's just my opinion. You can take what you like and leave the rest. The most important thing is that I can see a HUGE improvement and growth over the stuff you've shown me in the past. Keep it up!

Thanks for your reply, Michael.

I agree with your comments, I was a bit afraid to go overboard with details and textures so avoided them and went for a more graphic look.
I'm going to do a series of shorts in this style and gonna move more towards adding more texture. Or at least, adding some sort of middleground between the blacks and whites, I guess that's also what you are talking about.
That's something I really like in your current work but didn't dare to do myself: the more 'spotty' use of your inkline.
I feel it as well that now it gets a bit too clean and cold in places. Live and learn..

Thanks again for looking. Once the whole story is online I'll give a heads up. Hopefully you'll have a look then as well. Knowing you're looking over my shoulder is very encouraging, so don't stop! :D
