ANyone else not a sucker and buy these absolute Editions?
Dont get me wrong, I love Hardcovers. But really, for the price its waaay too much.
How often do you go back and read these things to make it worth it?
Isnt it fun to search through the floppies and pull them out of bags to read? ( I think so)
I think to own the floppies, trade and/or hardcover/absolute edition to me is a throw-back from the collector mentality of the 90s. Buy buy buy more shit, cause surely we need to spend more on comics that we really like, but rarely have the time to re-read.
thoughts?

They are really nice. But honestly - Marvel's big HC's are just as nice for $20 cheaper. Slipcases are lame.
That said, I think I have every Absolute Edition released so far...

I totally agree. I love comics that are comics. I didn't have no trades or HC's when I was a kid!!

I love my Planetary and Authority Absolutes. They are the best presentation of the material within, IMO. Brian Hitch, Frank Quitely, and John Cassaday's art look wonderful oversized. And my collection is much too huge to casually go looking for a single issue, and not organized enough to be collected into story archs (well, some of it is). Anyway, I like trades and hardcovers. And I reread my trades and hardcovers over and over again. So there.

I like them. If they were less expensive I'd get all of them. (The JLA/Avengers one is perfect for this format.)

I might get Planetary, Authority, and Watchmen. But 50 bucks for Hush? Pfffft.

Good Lord, no...
I even have my favorite comics bound into custom hardcovers so I don't have to deal with that crap.

I'm lucky in that I pay way less than most since I work at a comic store.
I only buy Absolute editions of titles or stories that I really, really like.
That being said I have most of the Absolutes (Planetary, The Authority, JLA/Avengers and more).
As well one doesn't necessarily have to keep the stories in other formats, they could always sell them or get store credit and I know collectors who've done that.

see the Planetary one to me sounds dumb, the story isnt even finished yet.
Why not wait til the story is done, all 27 or whatever issues, then make the damn thing.
If you havent bought any of them I guess its ok, but you spend over $60 for those floppies, then buy the hardcovers, just sounds a waste.

I only purchased ABSOLUTE AUTHORITY VOL. 2 and ABSOLUTE LOEG VOL. 1 because I was able to get them at insanely cheap prices, but bit my tongue and ordered ABSOLUTE PLANETARY VOL. 1 at regular discount (came out to 32-33 American dollars) that will hopefully arrive either October or November.
That said, having Frank Quitely's AUTHORITY work in oversized and on nice glossy paper (I hate the AUTHORITY TPBs crap-paper) is heavenly.

I don't know about you, but I re-read my comic trades all of the time. When I'm not insanely busy, anyway. I would never do that if all I had were the monthlies.

I have two Absolute Editions, LoEG and I paid $0 for it (and they weren't gifts). I'm willing to pay that price.
I have found that I am more likely to reread my comics if they are in a HC/trade form. I have reread my F&G trade 5 times and the issues only once. Plus it is easier to loan out a HC/trade and you can always eBay off your floppies.

BNolan : making fun of me for my custom hardcovers? hehe thats cool.
SO I guess I'm alone here then in the only person that only has one version of a particular story.
I lend out both floppies and trades, but you are right that its easier to lend out trades.

Well I can't say I only buy one version because I've been known to pick up Bendis' books in those fancy HC's. It's up to you. I don't mind especially since I've been picking a lot of these up for 50% off.

I usually either sell the monthlies if I decide to buy the trade version, or more often than not, I never bought the monthlies to start with.

I'm getting Absolute Watchmen. I won't buy it right away, I'll probably just pay a little bit at a time, like $10 or $20 a week. My shop does that sort of thing. And I did also buy the Hardcover V is for Vendetta. Plus, it's easier for me to whip out a TPB or HC than issues and reading or looking through them

I love the Absolute Editions, not just for the larger sized reproduction of the books, but for all the background and back up pieces they put in there. The Avengers / JLA had the most detailed appendix which gave information and character names of every background character drawn into the book. The upcoming Crisis edition looks to have almost as much or more background goodies.
Thats what makes these books worth it for me. Marvels hardcovers used to have a ton of extras in them when the first few editions came out, but more and more lately they dont seem to have much of anything at all in them. Just some photo copied character design sheets, and not even an intro or outro to the books.

Nice books. I like the font you chose. I'm up over 25 bound volumes right now, with many more in the planning stages.
So I can't afford the Absolute Editions...

Granted the benefit of easy access reading, but don't the newsprint paper and inclusion of ads bother you (where applicable given the material)?
Allen
Bill Nolan

Not really. I bind more modern stuff which is on decent enough paper already. With slightly older material, like my Steve Ditko's Speedball collection, I replaced copies where the newsprint had faded enough to hinder readability. As for the ads, they don't bother me. I rip out any centerfolds which are just four pages of ads (do this a lot with comics I don't bind, too), but I leave the rest of the ads in. The binding service will remove two-sided ad pages if you want them to, but I don't find it necessary.
It really does make them a lot easier to read. I've re-read the classic Steve Grant X-Man run three times since I had it bound a few years ago. I probably would never have pulled the individual comics out of the boxes to do that.

I've only bought Absolute LoEG. I love the script books and the oversized hardcover just does something cool to those stories.
I pre-ordered Absolute Watchmen as well.
