Joss has said that the ending isn't a cliffhanger per se - the point of it ending there was to show that the fight goes on. Considering the structure of the show - where everyone gets their moment in the sun and vanquishes a baddie - I'm inclined to agree.

Buffy's ending felt like an ending. This one left me without cuddling.

The Angel ending felt like a cliffhanger to me but i've fooled myself into thinking that there will be a Angel movie or something along those liines later that picks up where that ends. But that is one powerful ending

I love the "Butch-Sundance" ending of Angel.

As much as I'll enjoy the IDW stuff comming up, I also like the idea of no one surviving the alley.

It's where the show began, where Connor was born, where Darla died, where the beast emerged , and it's where the show ended.

There is such a thing as a hero's death , why must they survive their "last story" ?

I totally get you. I can't explain why I felt satisfied seeing this ending, or why it didn't feel like a cliffhanger to me. I think it was because I'd read enough about the ending when everyone saw it broadcast that I wasn't expecting something tied with a neat little bow.

I've seen another show end in a similar way, with a character
dead, two other characters missing and presumed dead, and another carried off in a stretcher without a leg,
and wanted there to be more, and there wasn't. That killed me. This one didn't somehow.

I'm fairly certain it was deliberate and not a 'to be continued...', though. They knew before writing it the show was ending.
