I wish we traveled in tubes. That has nothing to do with this thread whatsoever.

Why cant the Pope retire? Does he WANT to die in that uncomfortable looking hat?

Serious question. Does anyone know, can the Pope retire? Is it even allowed? And if he can, why doesn't he? Is he grooming a replacement, or just holding onto power? I have no idea as to the internal politics of tha vatican, but it seems to me that after 1500+ years of organized worship and shadow government, they don't really have all that much of a system in place for orderly seccesion.

he can choose to give up his authority if he's incapacitated, but he has refused to do so. he has stated a few times that the only way he'll give up his 'popeship' (or whatever it's called) is when he dies. as far as 'grooming a replacement'...i don't know that his opinion matters entirely, because all the cardinals get to vote after he dies. ...then something happens with smoke signals from the vatican as to whether or not a new pope is chosen. it's all quite shady and antiquated.

The reign of this latest pope is just another clear reminder that the Papacy and those who follow its will are a complete joke.

Its not really all that shady. All Cardinals under the age of 80 gather in the Sistine Chapel and vote on a new pope. The first person to recieve 2/3 of the vote then becomes pope. The "smoke signals" are an old tradition, by witch the people of Rome are notified that a new pope has been chosen.

Peace,
Mark

Yes the 1,000,000,000 of us who are Catholic are jokes. It takes some balls to assume 1,000,000,000 people, a nice chunk of all people on earth, are jokes.

Well, good for you.

As a reformed Catholic, I can honestly say that admitting it is the first step to recovery.

i dunno...i still vote for shady. i'm just not a fan of behind-closed-doors-type stuff that affects an entire religion, and thus has the potential to affect millions of lives.

that, and it's definitely shady if there's a witch involved. ;)

In todays world especially in the, US and western Europe, its hard to accept decisions not made in public but its done in a closed door manner to take outside influences out of the decision. Say after a few ballots a candidate who was not liked by a particular country, or by a particular group, started gaining votes, then that country or group might start protesting, or spreading defamitory lies, or as happened in the past invade Rome and force the cardinals to elect someone else. By doing the election in private the new pope is elected free of outside pressure.

Peace,
Mark

While I probably could recreate the same picture with photoshop, I didn't make it. I saved it from one of Cth's daily picture threads.

You're actually more like "why did the chicken cross the road?"

It's technically a joke, but almost no one finds it funny.

Relax chief. I was only half serious. Well, mostly serious. Most Catholics I know don't even give two shits about the Pope. I see sort of a split between Roman Catholics, and every other Catholic. So the ones that do follow the pope, I think are a bit nutty. But we love you anyways.
