I actually like all his work, but I think Gotham Central is my favorite of the bunch. I haven't liked the super bright colors Marvel's doing lately. I like the dull moody stuff more.

If you are liking his Gotham Central stuff, and haven't read Scene of the Crime yet...it's a must!

Still one of my all time favorite stories ever in comic form.

Okay, my SPIDER-MAN UNLIMITED story is my favorite. But that's pimping and I don't want to go down that road too far ;)

I first came to know Michael's work on Gotham Central. In fact, when Tom Brevoort said Michael was doing my story, I thought "there must be two guys named Michael Lark in the industry, because there's no way I got somebody that good."

what is it about?

It's about a small-time P.I. who is investigating the disappearance of this girls sister (if I remember correctly)

It's by Ed Brubaker. It really got to me. There's a wonderfully written little romance in the book that just about breaks your heart (God, that sounded girly!) and the lead character is fantastic. He's not slick or bigger than life. He's someone you might hang out with. He's got flaws. I instantly liked him as I read it.

It's a great mystery, though, and the characters are great.

(Checks Brubaker's website)

Nominated for two 1999 Eisner awards: Best Writer and Best Mini-Series

Translated into nine languages

"Ed Brubaker, in the Scene of the Crime miniseries collected here, demonstrates that he is a great writer.. I don't tend to toss around the term "page-turner" much, but it's fitting for this book." -- Savant

"With just the right mix of cynicism and sentimentality, this one's a winner, sure to thrill you, and then break your heart. The art and text work perfectly together, in the tough-minded tale of loss and redemption, revenge and forgiveness." -- The Thrilling Detective

I didn't know most of his work til this thread. i was really surprised to find a hawkman by Lark which was pretty good. I voted Gotham Central cause it's one of those great combinations of writer and artist but i havn't gotten into alot of older stuff yet.

I don't even know how to vote. Scene of the Crime was so good, but he was on Gotham Central for a nice long run, but Nine Lives was one of the best illustrated Elseworlds stories, and how can you not like his four issue run on SMT.

I've not read Terminal City yet, though I bought the issues in a going out of business sale.

Gotham Central (though I believe the best is yet to come...)

and the very few brief, and visually cryptic appearances of Batman in his GC issues, are some of my favorite depictions of the character ever!

I really enjoyed ish 10 of The Pulse which you and Gaudiano did, your distinct style really came through, yet it seemed much cleaner than the previous two issues. Not sure what was different than ish 9, as Stefano inked that issue, but something about 10 stood out to me. Pantazis' colors in that issue were gorgeous as well, especially the Clint/Kat scene in the newsroom, those were probably my 5 favorite pages of the entire series to date. Mike, you do one damn good Clint Barton.

Well, I wish I could claim credit for that, but that issue was pretty much all Stefano. I did print-sized breakdowns - just rough, cartoony drawings to indicate the storytelling - and then turned it over to Stefano cause there was an emergency with Cap and they needed me to step in.

Here are some breakdowns. They're a lot tighter than I usually do.

Steve was there to provide some contrast to Jack, and also to show how a slacker like Jack could end up being interested in becoming a P.I. Plus he was useful to get some information out of.

This is my first visit to the board, but I wanted to chime in when I saw this thread (even if it is a year old). A truly underrated Lark work is the Roy Thomas collaboration: Superman: War of the Worlds.

One of Roy Thomas's finest. Frankly, I was a little shocked he still had it in him...

edit: Okay, I see it mentioned above now. Consider this a seconding of opinion!

Nine Lives is gorgeous- I think that's where Lard, er... Lark really started using brushes exclusively & the whole book has a wonderful 40s noir feel.
I actually need to get another copy of it because I've wrecked the binding; that's the drawback of the landscape format.

If I had actually voted in the poll, it would've been for Nine Lives.
