ug. 7 — ABC News Anchor Peter Jennings died today at his home in New York City. He was 67. On April 5, Jennings announced he had been diagnosed with lung cancer. He is survived by his wife Kayce Freed, his two children, Elizabeth, 25, and Christopher, 23, and his sister Sarah Jennings.

In an announcing Jennings' death to his ABC colleagues, News President David Westin wrote:

"For four decades, Peter has been our colleague, our friend, and our leader in so many ways. None of us will be the same without him.

"As you all know, Peter learned only this spring that the health problem he'd been struggling with was lung cancer. With Kayce, he moved straight into an aggressive chemotherapy treatment. He knew that it was an uphill struggle. But he faced it with realism, courage, and a firm hope that he would be one of the fortunate ones. In the end, he was not.

"We will have many opportunities in the coming hours and days to remember Peter for all that he meant to us all. It cannot be overstated or captured in words alone. But for the moment, the finest tribute we can give is to continue to do the work he loved so much and inspired us to do."

very sad. I knew he had cancer, but thought he was going to beat it.

alex wallau, a former sportscaster, now top ABC exec had a very public bout with the big C, and that was over 10 years ago.

Peter Jennings was the shit! Nobody was more smooth, classy and dignified than he was. He was the 'James Bond' of news anchors. They'll never be another one like him.

I hadn't heard of his health problems -- this is truly sad news. I wish the best for his family in the wake of this personal tragedy... He was a good man, a man I trusted with my news.

Wow, although I knew he had cancer, this is pretty shocking to me. For some reason, I thought he would make it. He seemed so young to me...

So sad.

It's scary to think that someone who stopped smoking 20 years ago can still get hit so hard by lung cancer.

Wow. I had no idea about this. This is really depressing, he was my favorite reporter growing up and still is to this day. RIP, Mr.Jennings; you were a good man.

I am watching NBC and they replayed his speech before he stepped down and he said that he smoked 20 years ago and over 9-11 he smoked a little bit.

You said it best, to think I could stop smoking today (been smoking 10 years) and down the road I could still be fucked...well it stresses me out, freaks me out...and makes me want to just say "fuck it" and keep on smoking.

RIP Jennings. Best thoughts and feeling go out to his family and friends.
