Full disclosure, I have no experience with the original series but I thought the movie was really funny. Like surprisingly good because I thought it would be terrible (mostly because of Channing Tatum's involvement). But he and Jonah Hill are very well cast and it reminded me of Pineapple Express in a very good way.
And while it might not be enough to sway some of the TV fans who were inevitably upset with the direction the producers chose to take the film in, there are a few cameos that are likely to make you smile just a bit.

Not likely to see it in the theater, but it does look funny. Can you spoil me on the cameos?

Lets see... its another of these things where they "redo" an old show as a movie, and mock it by making it into an over the top comedy, right?
Gee, its been 5 minutes since the last one of those! (and 30 seconds since we talked about another one here in-forum, Dark Shadows)

Holly Robinson Peete, Johnny Depp and Peter DeLuise all play adult versions of their old characters from the old show.

Okay, that is pretty cool.
Especially Depp, since he supposedly hated that show so much.

Yeah, I'd heard that. Maybe it was because that was his first big project and he felt a little different in later years?

The weird thing about the original show is that I've heard several film reviewers in the UK stating that it was never shown in the UK despite the fact it was shown regularly on satellite in the late 80s / early 90s. Back then the vast majority of people still had 4 channel terrestrial TV.
I had satellite in 1990 so I saw the show fairly regularly.

I think after his success with Pirates and his ability to finally embrace success, he was able to lay his feelings about 21 Jump Street to rest. His main issue was that he felt used, just another product placement to sell the show. He had no control over his image, over his own publicity. Pirates turned the tables on that because it was all his choice, not someone else's. Whereas 21 Jump Street exploited Johnny Depp, Pirates - and Depp - exploited Jack Sparrow. He was selling a character, not himself.
Movie spoilers -
I understand that Hanson dies in the movie - if so, this is certainly a way to put that character - and that part of his life - to rest. However, it doesn't hold to the canon of the show, where they had an episode in which Hanson and the others were now old men and women, reflecting on their life with Jump Street. I'm sure either way Depp feels he's finally free of the character.
