View Full Version : OMG! "Game Change" was amazing!

This had some of the best acting I've seen in a HBO production ever. From Julianne Moore to Ed Harris to Sarah Paulson to Woody Harrelson -- wow.

And it's been fascinating to watch both Schmidt and Wallace talk about this film over the past few days. I clearly don't agree with them politically, but they know what they're talking about. They've been involved in campaign after campaign. Nicole didn't even vote for the McCain/Palin ticket. Ouch.

This was amazing. It both made me feel sorry for Sarah, and despise her at the same time. She's obviously a narcissist, but she was torn apart by people who weren't prepared to deal with her. It was ugly on both sides.

What a film, though.

Okay...

I've debated this with a friend or two but, sure, Sarah Pallin is attractive. But she keeps getting played by women who are ungodly attractive, even by celebrity standards, at least as far as I'm concerned.

Well, Andy Samburg played her on SNL this last weekend, offsetting that some.

Sure, people tend to get played by more attractive actors in the movies. But Pallin has been played by women who I find, I dunno, super-charismatic. And they're using that midwest-to-Dakota range of accents, which I find attractive. But I don't find Pallin that attractive. I don't get it.

Because her epic levels of stupidity combined with the pride she takes in her ignorance and anti-intellectualism is skin crawlingly unattractive.

I'm glad to hear it was good. I saw a clip they played and it looked like they had made Sarah Palin almost comically-stupid in the film, like to the point of parody. I was expecting a black comedy or something.

Sounds more like a documentary, then.

Nyuk-nyuk.

Pat, the thing is that Palin isn't graded in a vacuum, but on a curve. In general she's "attractive," but when compared to many other women in politics she's right near the extreme top of the pyramid at "OMG SMOKIN!!!" It's not because she's really that hot, just that she's that much hoter than the other women in her field.

Did you not see any of her interviews, including the Couric one?

She is very stupid.

I am saddened that the thread has turned into a debate on Sarah Palin's hotness. I mean, no one's talking about John McCain's lack of hotness. (though I tend to find Ed Harris attractive, at least when he was younger. He looks intense & smart.)

I saw the last hour of Game Change. I thought it was quite good but, wow, if those examples are real, like having to teach Palin a map of EUROPE so she knows all the countries...ACK.

McCain come off fairly well, which might be due to the fact that his staffers were the ones used as sources. Palin's main problem, oddly, didn't seem to be her ignorance but her utter conviction that what she thought was right. It was sorta like watching George W. Bush being mullish.

It was entertaining. Mostly because of Woody Harrelson. And I never thought I'd say that. Julianne Moore was excellent but scary because most of that stuff is true.

The only reason I jumped on this "Hot or Not" train is 'cause that seems to be the main reason for why some men would vote for her.

At least the Canadian ones I've spoken to.

I thought it was decent, but it's really hard to believe that all of the scenarios put forth are not highly dramatized. I'm no champion of Palin, but she came off as being functionally retarded in that flick (I have to imagine she knew at least some of the basics of WWII, for instance). There were some pretty good moments that actually caused me to feel a little pity towards her, but mostly she just came off as the absolute worst.

According to Schmidt and Wallace who were obviously there, as well as Halperin and Heillman who wrote the book, it's pretty much dead on.

It's frightening to think about, but I find it very believable truth be told. I mean, just this past week they did polls in Mississippi and Alabama, and in both only ~14% believe that Obama is a Christian, while ~50% believe that he is a Muslim. Alexandra Pelosi did a series of interviews with people on the street in Mississippi, and some of the stuff that was said was unreal.

Now, of course the deep South is an extreme example, but the levels of ignorance all across the country are astounding. We're all ignorant of all sorts of things. It's just that some of us are ignorant about pretty much everything other than our lives. Sarah is one of those people. And when you see her in the film, or in real life for that matter, it's so obviously a symptom of her extreme narcissism.

I mean, why bother learning about anything else when you are all that matters?

Yeah I saw that Pelosi showed on Real Time last week with that interview with people in Mississippi.

Unbelievably frightening.

I really liked the movie. The writer, Danny Strong (who played Jonathan on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, interestingly enough) said that he went beyond the book that the movie is based on and conducted interviews with relevant figures. He claims that everything shown in the movie is sourced. And sure enough, pretty much everyone but Palin either corroborates, or is remaining silent.

I actually think that Palin came across as very human in the movie, and I sympathized with her to a certain degree. I know she's been concerned about how she is portrayed, but everyone already knew that she was stupid, if not the exact depth of her stupidity.

See, it wasn't her ignorance that was the problem for me. It was her narcissism.

But I also agree that, at least for the first two acts, she was an at times sympathetic character. She was in so far over her head, she had no idea what was going on. It was starting take a huge toll, and I felt sorry for her.

People could understand the ignorance, I mean you can just go "She lived in Alaska" where you don't expect to have that much knowledge of the Continental 48.

Its the shift she took in attitude right after the VP debate that's the real jaw drop moment where you see what she's really all about. She just seemed to realize a great amount of the population would believe anything that comes out of her mouth and ran with it.

The whole scene on election night in Arizona with the concession speech still gives me chills in a very bad way. When I saw it live and when I saw it in the movie I still went "Man, that's so 1940's Germanyesque its unbelievable."

Exactly.

She went from sympathetic to a narcissistic bitch in like 5 minutes. She realized that she could be a "heroine." She realized she could be a "star."

Very scary. And to this day, she is on Fox.

Hey, I have nothing against Bristol. She has zero responsibility for her mother's opinions.

Granted, I kinda think Bristol is hot. But that's a different issue altogether.

Sarah herself, she's got lots of problems.

Considering how well she followed her mother's opinions that's saying something. :-)

Though now of course she's gotten herself on the brainwashing. Long as it makes her money too.
