Frank Carson, who was a familiar face on comedy and childrens programming in the 70s and 80s in the Uk has died of cancer aged 85.
He was from Northern Ireland and was one of the last of the stereotypically stupid Irish standup acts with only Jimmy Cricket and a couple of minor acts appearing afterwards. Carson was known for his rather chaotic style, which was cleverly executed and his catchphrases like "It's the way I tell 'em" were known all over the UK and Ireland.
He had been involved in charitable work and received a papal knighthood for his charity work. He had been ill for some time and had health related breaks in his career, including a heart problem which led to him appearing on childrens Saturday morning programme Tiswas in the 1970s when he returned to TV after having appeared in variety and standup comedy shows in prior years. He had been a winner on the talent show Opportunity Knocks which was a massive launch pad in those days for comedy and musical acts.
While he hadn't been on TV in the recent past, he'll be remembered as a funny, old fashioned comedian from the old school of comedy.
