View Full Version : Impressions of the Grammys by someone who didn't watch them. :)

OK, I didn't watch the show, as I pretty much never watch the Grammys. I'm more of a Golden Globes/Oscars kinds of guy. But I followed stories and watched some performances around the 'net because, well, it's fun. Here are my impressions.
-- Adele. Wow. I'm just now, in the past couple of weeks, discovering Adele and I have to say that not only did she rock in her performance, but she looked fantastic.
-- Fergie. Girl, if you're gonna go for it with that gown and your undies showing underneath, then go all the way! I love it.
-- Nikki Minaj. Seriously? I mean, SERIOUSLY?!
-- Taylor. You looked like a Princess in that amazing beaded gown. Stick with Zuhair Muhad, he never does you wrong. Oh, and yeah: some people didn't seem to get the gist of your performance. Fine. Whatever. Forget them, they're "mean." :) (I especially loved how she changed some of the lyrics. Plus she sounded better live than she has in the past. Good sign.)
-- Rebecca Black. OK, now this pisses me off. The girl's 14 years old, got slammed all over the 'net for a year, and there are all these idiots saying crap like, "Why the hell is she even there?!" or "She is disgracing the Grammys!" Come on. She's a kid. She is probably having the night of her life, meeting her heroes, hanging with the glitterati, getting all dressed up. Cut the poor girl some slack! People suck sometimes.
-- Rihanna. Damn, you looked fantastic. EXCEPT for that hideous blond, thin hair. Seriously, go back to the neon red, or something. Why ruin a beautiful Armani gown with that hair?! Ugh.
-- Kanye and Jay-Z. Y'all both won, and neither showed up. LOL. :)

That's disturbing.
OTOH, I don't know much about Brown. Was this an isolated incident? Is this something he's done repeatedly? I honestly don't know.
Obviously, what he did is inexcusable. But is this who he is, or was it something that happened that he's gotten over and become a better person?

Here was my take on the Chris Brown incident from a couple of years ago:
WHY I DON’T “FORGIVE” CHRIS BROWN (http://iblogalot.com/2010/09/16/why-i-dont-forgive-chris-brown/)
And two recent articles about him performing @ the Grammys:
I’m Not Okay with Chris Brown Performing at the Grammys and I’m Not Sure Why You Are (http://hellogiggles.com/im-not-okay-with-chris-brown-performing-at-the-grammys-and-im-not-sure-why-you-are)

Oh...oh god...that's horrid. I got through three tweets and I had to stop.
Morrison_Lad, I'm not positive, but I believe it was only a single incident where he actually struck somebody, but that there was (and is) ongoing emotional abuse and a pattern of denigration and sexism (Also, according to Todd in the Shadows one of his "I'm sorry" songs was a "Women are the blame for all my problems" song, so I'm not sure if he even counts as pretending to be remorseful).

Adele is one of the very few musicians in recent years who's gotten there through actual talent, rather than the relentless hype of the current "all phony, all the time" pop culture. She doesn't need autotune, didn't come up through the Simon Cowell Crap Machine, and she looks like a real human being rather than a plastic Bratz doll.
And then there's Rebecca Black. I don't see the need to be mean to her, but I also don't see the need to pretend she has any talent whatsoever. Then again, she's living proof of the truth that (with a very few exceptions like Adele), there is no longer any relationship whatsoever between talent and success in the music industry.
Any awards ceremony that Kanye West fails to show up at is automatically better as a result.

God, I get sick of that. You know, that's why I didn't even get into Adele in the first place? Everyone is going off about how great she is, how terrible everyone else is? It's really tiring after a while, you know?

Snooki was there. Paris Hilton was there.
It's SUCH a terrible thing that someone wanted to see Rebecca Black, a KID, there among a bunch of her heroes? Come on. The girl got slammed for more than a year, and it's somehow a terrible thing that she gets to get dressed up, go to a big ball, and see everyone she loves?!
Fucking christ.

Kanye is better than 99% of the people who won a damned thing.

Given the choice tween listening to Kanye in ANY way, whether rapping or talking, or the sound of the power drill about to puncture my ear drum.....
Hmmm, this is a tough choice...

I might have paid attention if Kanye was there. Dude is always entertaining. I actually found myself wishing he'd take Taylor Swift's mic during her angsty little performance.

I don't personally like Adele, but the woman is talented. Well done.
I was also glad to see my boys the Foo Fighters take some Grammys, though frankly "Walk" is not their best song in general and not even the best from that album (my favorite from that album is actually Arlandria).
I turned it off after Katy Perry since I can't stand her. I was also pissed off that we didn't get a whole song from Stevie Wonder.
Also, Bruno Mars is not James Brown. Though I will give that his backup band was pretty good.
And I was miming throwing tomatoes at Chris Brown whenever he was on stage. There was also this tweet which made me laugh out loud:

If you're going to get inflamed over a thread about singers who you don't know personally, then it's best you stay out of the thread.

Apparently I don't. I seldom experience fatigue due to other people's opinions differing from mine. I've learned to just shrug and move on.

Why does she deserve it more than any other 14-year-old?
She's already gotten to costar in a Katy Perry video, had her song featured on "Glee", hosted an awards show on MTV, and her song made the top 60 on the Billboard chart. She's started her own record label and is going happily (supposedly) on with her "music career." So I don't think she's suffering too much. Who was it that said all publicity is good publicity, as long as they spell your name right?
Fucking christ.
I think Nikki Minaj would have if she could have.
Kanye is better than 99% of the people who won a damned thing.
That's probably true, sadly enough.
But I'm more concerned with the fact that he's an obnoxious, shrill, pathologically conceited sphincter.

Okay, that's just not what I was expecting. Not at all. People really have no idea what abuse is like. For one, it's NOT sex.
Freakin' idiots.

I don't normally post videos from this gentleman on this board, but I think in this case, it's warranted.

Do you think you can teach Bert how to do this? I've been trying to help him kick his award show addiction for years.....
