I see this line of thinking on comic book/video game sites a lot and I have to admit, don't understand it at all.

I actually find Flo to be a bit unattractive. I consider myself to be a proud member of nerd culture, but don't understand this particular segment of it.

I almost feel like it's a defense mechanism. The actress is approachable because she isn't great looking.

I don't think I've ever stopped to watch the T-Moble ads, but I've stopped to watch that Education Connection ad several times. I must find her super-cute for me to stop on a commercial for more than 2seconds, because that ad is pretty obnoxious.

The T-Mobile lady looks like she's very very very very rich, judging purely by her ads, how many of them there are etc. She probably therefore is self-assured, confident, take-charge type of person. The EC girl looks like a struggling actress, and is therefore probably very insecure and needy. Both have their attractive psycho-social attributes, but I've had my share of psycho actress ex-girlfriends, so I'd go with the brunette with the bee-stung lips. ;)
