This isn't meant to sound mean, snotty or condescending. Let me go on and say that right now.

If you have a self-published book, web-comic, etc. and you're going to invest $ into a banner ad in hopes of moving traffic to check out your gem - work on your ad copy. I don't care if it's a $3.25 cheap-o banner ad. If you believe in your work and you honestly want people to check it out - work on your ad copy.

I've read so many banner ads on this site where I simply stare agog wonder "what the hell are they selling?" And the few that have some semblance of selling a book are usually so poorly laid out it's a chore to read.

You are (more than likely) an unknown entity. You aren't selling books, comics, etc. on your name (yet!) so you need...clear, concise, SHORT copy that tells me why I have to read your book. Or intrigue me enough to click on the banner.

Then? Lay it out in a bold, eye-catching, easy-to-read manner. Don't get clever. Don't try to re-invent the banner ad.

I want to read your comic. I want you to drive traffic to your site. Remember: there is just as much of an art to selling as there is to making! ;)

No, no, NO! Banner ads should be huge with flaming text and big glassy buttons. Plus they should play a midi.

I feel a lot of these banners are very effective at conveying to me that a lot of these comics are poorly written and drawn.

Yeah, but they could at least fool us into clicking and finding out for ourselves! ;)
