View Full Version : Explain to me the appeal of Cloak & Dagger

I've read more than once that everyone comes to Marvel with a Cloak & Dagger pitch and/or a Dr. Strange pitch. I get the Dr. Strange thing, it's a corner of Marvel that doesn't get a ton of love and you can really go nuts with it, potentially. But Cloak & Dagger?

They have a pretty strong (internet) following, and people seem generally and genuinely excited when they pop up and I honestly don't get why. I've never found them that engaging in anything I've seen them in and don't see much in the way of inherent story potential.

Is it because they're a duo where neither is a white dude? Is it because they make for a pretty striking visual? Is it just that it's been so long that they had their own sandbox that everyone remembers them being more awesome than they are? Is there something else I'm missing? I honestly want to know where the love for these two comes from. I don't dislike them, I just don't love them either.

I find your lack of love for Ty and Tandy disturbing.

But...but...why?

It's quite simple:

Serious answer: I love ty and Tandy because of their potential. I hate the way they're handled most of the time, but I always feel like they have so much story potential in just about any genre. And even though they're 30 years old or so, I still feel like they are largely undeveloped and exist largely as blank slates.

I've never read any Cloak & Dagger, so I always assumed they were Marvel's answer to Hawk & Dove, which I'm sure is probably wrong.

It seems like you're asking for something that's hard to get at. Either you see the appeal or you don't. You can try to quantify taste and preferences when speaking of something that doesn't float your boat, but to what end? I'm not coming after you, but I usually wonder this particular thing when I see someone asking for an explanation of why a phenomenon (doo doo doo doo doo) they're left out of is popular.

Marvel accidentally created the perfect Teen Titans members.

Wait until the next generation Bendis makes them the core of 3 Avengers teams.

When I was a kid I liked the look of them, like the covers of books, posters, and that sort of stuff, but to read one of their books was no fun at all. I sort of liked them in Maximum Carnage and I think they were best in Runaways.

This.

It's about like asking someone to explain the appeal of pickles or to explain the appeal of golf or to explain the appeal of anything else someone likes that you don't.

Probably. But it's a comic message board, they have a Spider-Island tie-in by a writer I like, and I was hoping to be sold on them as characters.

I don't get why you have to defend the question. Sometimes if I dont like something that a lot of others do, I like to get their perspective on it to see if it is something I am missing or just not getting for some odd reason or I am just not looking at it in the intended way.

As far as Cloak and Dagger go, I think the appeal is cool powers, a cool look, and untapped potential. There are not a lot of characters that have been around as long as they have without a great definitive story. There isn't a huge history to contradict and I think people are always hopeful that someone is going to do something truly epic with them.

If Rick Leonardi isn't drawing it, there is no appeal.

The visual is fantastic, and I think as far as street-level characters go, they have a lot of potential.

I don't consider interracial dating as a thing people need to "try". Thinking about it in those terms almost comes off as the exotification of other races.

I personally don't even like calling it "interracial dating." We're all humans and I think you should date who you are interested/attracted to. Who gives a shit what color, creed or gender they are?

Whether I'm dating a Brenda or a George. What's it to anyone if they're white, black, green, or blue?

I don't know if it's still true, but that they needed each other or else their powers will fuck them up was pretty cool. And that they were homeless/squatting in an old church. And their focus was saving/rehabilitating kids from vice.

Weren't they created by Bill Mantlo?

I remember when they first appeared in comics. The storylines were a little too intense for me at the time. Didn't care to read about kids that were junkies. But their look was undeniably cool.

I did like how they were Street-Level heroes. Fighting thugs and gangs, instead of Super Villians and Aliens.

Marvel doesn't seem to know what to do with them. They tried changing their origin to make them mutants, and incorporate them into the X-titles, but they have undone that.

They have an interesting look and interesting powers, but they still seem unevolved as characters.

I'll throw in with the crowd saying that they have a great look and untapped potential.

Still, as a kid, I remember picking up an issue from their original mini by Mantlo. It was a bizarre tale of some guy poisoning aspirin bottles. Scared the bejeesus out of me. Little did I know it was mirroring real life at the time.

I've gone back to that mini since then and I really enjoyed it. It's creepy, strange and Leonardi's artwork is damn good.

What is wrong with Marvel? D&D get the most letters of any comic in months & they won't even commit to a second mini-series? I really think the Marvel I loved was killed when Disney bought them.

"Can we please get more Cloak & Dagger from Spencer and Rios? It's so rare that the perfect creative team is brought together for the perfect property."

"It doesn't look that way, sorry. For all that it got good notices, the recent CLOAK & DAGGER limited series really didn't sell well enough to warrant more."- Tom Breevort

Yeah, if "the most letters of any comic in months" means 75 instead of 50 that isn't gonna help much.
