Anyone ever play by the real rules?

I have no idea what they are. Monopoly is a terrible game. Unless it's the McDonald's one. Either way, I'm not winning shit.

I have four versions of James Bond Monopoly, and two Marvel Super Heroes versions. None of them have been opened. However, that's an interesting article on the real rules.

Yeah, that'd how we played the game.
That's when you let everyone else pay full price for the crappy properties and you buy up the good spots for $50.

Yeah, I've been playing it all wrong. Well...at least the last time I played it, which was probably 25 years ago.

Every video game version of Monopoly includes the auction rule. I didn't realize most people didn't know about it. However, I hardly ever see the rule put into effect because who lands on an open property and doesn't buy it?

Well, I was surprised.
Of course, I was probably a teenager last time I played.

Exactly. I don't think I've ever landed on a property without purchasing it.

Never played by these rules because no one I've ever played with wants to. As a compromise I say that players have to go all around the board one time in order to buy property. That's one of my "house rules". It adds in a little more luck.

But when people blow their wad too quickly you can wind up purchasing Park Place for $10.

The big thing slowing down games: the "tax money goes into Free Parking" house rule. It just creates a problem of too much money floating through the economy. I made my family play without it last time (but without the auction rule), and the game was quick and fun, and we actually finished.

I have one of those video games. The funniest thing about it is the voice of "Mr. Moneybags" as the auctioneer. :)

Who wants to buy property in Atlantic City? That place is a shithole.
Yeah, we used to use the rule that you had to go around at least once before you could buy any property (thus, as said above, adding the element of luck into the chase around the board).
We also used to put all of the money paid into the kitty in Free Parking (I liked how it suddenly made somebody else rich enough to buy out everybody else; it often sped up the game, and was more like inflation, boom-and-bust cycles, and windfall profits).
We rarely used the auction rule, because, as was said in the article, the vicious bidding wasn't really conducive to family harmony.
Almost all of those old games were played more with family members than with random folks, since there wasn't any Internet, and nobody would sit around with their friends long enough to play Monopoly.
I always figured part of the reason for the game taking so long was that it was invented in the radio age, and was useful for killing a couple hours and keeping the kids from running around the house and jumping on the beds.
My Dad once made us a Michigan Rummy (http://www.best-family-games.com/Michigan_rummy.html) game out of an old tablecloth, much like the original Monoploy game was created. And he did it from memory, since there wasn't any Internet to look stuff up. That was actually a fun family game.

I've been thinking about this, trying to remember if I knew about this rule. We usually read the rules to refresh ourselves, but it's been so long since I've played. However, I know that there was one rule we - as kids - never really understood and it did have to do with the properties, so we just ignored it. I'm guessing that's what a lot of people did with this, or any other rule they didn't understand.

I'll mortgage my other properties so that I can buy another one before allowing a property go to auction. I'll also force anyone to pay over market price for any and all properties that go to auction. No one's getting Park Place for under $350 on my watch!

Well, how the hell did you play if you didn't buy/auction property? Just let it sit there?
God your games must have lasted hours and run out of money and shit.

There is NOTHING about Monopoly conducive to family harmony. It's about teaching your kids to mercilessly DESTROY all opponents, to set them on the path to future success so they aren't still living with you when they're 25.

I've played Monopoly a ton of different ways. Hell, even the Monopoly video games they release give you options on how to play it. What a silly thing to rage over.

I have the Indiana Jones Monopoly where the box is one of the crates from the warehouse. It was either before or around the time the fourth movie came out, so it had some properties related to that... It killed probably a total of one bored night, don't remember if we used the real rules or whatever.

One of the big problems with Monopoly is that someone always makes a stupid trade, and everyone else gets fucked as a result.

I remember playing a game a few years ago, where everyone was taking it seriously, and then a friend of mine suddenly had a bad turn, and decided to sell everything to another player for $1. That pissed me off so much that I just walked away from the game. Now, whenever we start a game, I go on a tirade about how if we're not going to take it seriously, I'm not even going to start the game.
We rarely play anymore.

Monopoly around my family's home is a full contact sport, and not for the faint of heart. We play with those rules, house rules AND bumper car rules.

If I'm actually playing a tabletop and it's monopoly, that in itself is wrong. Or I'm hanging out with old people.

You obviously are playing with an insufficient quantity of Scotch.
The only rule of Monopoly is that fight breaks out after 9 hours of playing and relationship comes to an end.

tl;dr but if this guy has that much of an issue with the way a board game is played, something is wrong.

I haven't played the tabletop game since I was a kid, against my brother when I was sick one Christmas.
Played the computer version a few times, though. I prefer Trivial Pursuit.
Damn, I need to get a game night going.

it doesn't mention the "real" inventors. it focuses on the world championships.

If I recall correctly, the documentary does mention the real inventors, and it also is a pretty holistic view of the game, from competitive to casual play, collecting, and merchandising. I recommend it to anyone who likes or hates the game.

I don't really have tome to go through the whole thread but I will say this:
I have never finished a game of MONOPOLY. Someone usually gets pretty bored and we decide to go do something else.
I suppose that means I would really suck as a tycoon.
