I always liked the original coloring done by him. It makes the books seem offbeat, and sickly. which really comes out well in the story. I never understood why everyone says the bolland coloring job he did for the hc re release a few years ago is so much better.

Yeah. I don't understand people's opinions either.

It's like...why can't everybody just think the same why I do?

It'd make my life so much better.

Hey Kirby, do you have any comparison images to see the difference?

I have the Deluxe HC of Killing Joke and the original in the DCU Stories of Alan Moore. There's definitely a real difference in tone in the two versions. I don't know that either is appreciably better than the other, but it's interesting to compare the two.

Here you go.

The original looks more like how I think the world looks to the Joker. a little trippy.

Bolland's impressive art seems to pop more with his recoloring. So I prefer that to the original.

I think I actually gave away my copy of the original.

Yeah, I don't prefer one over the other. It's a great study in coloring and what colorist can do to affect the book.

I like both, but I do kind of love the way the coloring on those late 80s prestige format books looked. Nine times out of ten I'll take airbrush over photoshop gradients.

I hate the recoloring. The original had this acid-tinged effect that called to mind the emphasis on secondary colors over primary that was a deliberate decision in Watchmen. It subverts expectations from a superhero comic. It gives everything an awesomely "queasy" look.

The new coloring theory just looked like murky-ass realism. It's all the colors they overuse on Vertigo books as insta-code for "SERIOUS."

Boo on it. Boo, I say.

Incidentally, I've hardly heard this taken as consensus. I know people who like the new coloring job and who were excited to see a literal "new coat of paint" on a classic story, but even when it debuted the comparison between new and old was hotly debated. It's definitely not everyone saying it's better.

Just your dumb friends.

It's true. I hope his friends are killed by the Joker.

Jason's friends, too.
