View Full Version : I feel sorry for jt krul

I know he wrote rise of arsenal, but I hear his other stuff like teen titans and current green arrow run are pretty good. It sucks that everyone now is going to remember him as the guy with the dead cat. How much did editorial have to do with rise of arsenal?

I feel sorry for J.T Krul too. I mean, he gets to write a brand new Green Arrow book how he likes along with a new Captain Atom book. Poor bastard. ;)
And btw, I'm sure most people know Rise of Arsenal isn't conducive to how he writes at his best.

You're only asking this now? From what I understand, Editorial saddled Krul with the unenviable task to taking Roy down the road to ruin via drugs, anger and remorse with him settling into a damaged anti-hero role and a renewed non-relationship with Cheshire by the end of it so that they could work him into Titans later. So Krul was stuck with some of the cars in that trainwreck, but not all of them.
I would say given the course editorial had set him up on, going all out and doing the cat scene was actually brilliant.

Yeah, the cat scene was actually one of the lighter points of the story.

I usually like Mr Krul, but I have to admit, this month's Teen Titans has one of the dumbest lines ever uttered. Wonder Girl is trapped in a cage, sees a green bird fly towards her which becomes a green ape trying to free her and says "Beast Boy? Is that you?" No, it's a different green shape shifter who happened to be in the neighborhood and likes you.

Where did it appear in the book? Had Beast Boy appeared yet? Every comic is potentially someone's first, and they gotta work the names in somewhere.

Several pages in, after we spend about three pages focused JUST on Beast Boy, musing on his life and career as a hero.

His Deadman & the Flying Graysons this week was good; there's a moment toward the end, when the Graysons do a pre-show ritual, that shows you everything you need to know about who they are as a family. A really deft piece of writing.

I think it's very unlikely it was a slam.

I think it was more likely that he simply wanted "freakshow" characters. I mean Doctor Fate was there as well, so I don't think it was meant as an attack on Gail.

Don't read it. It will brain your damage. JT likes to take the fall for the story, but it's clear he was trying to make lemonade out of a big pile of shit. He came up with chocolate coke.
That said, I have enjoyed all his other stuff (Fathom, Kiani, Soulfire, Mindfield, TT, GA) and find him to be a really sweet guy. Easy to talk to, likes interacting with the fans, just a cool dude.

Mindfield has been really, really good. I thought that his Green Arrow run had potential but was absolutely killed by all the Brightest Day nonsense that it worked in. I don't know how much of that is JT's doing and how much of it landed in his lap.
If the new GA series gets a nice, clean start I might very well check that out.

I don't hold the series against Krul too much, but I'm still not running out to check out his work. He's not on Adam Beechen levels of a Do Not Read List.
Also the guy that wrote that whole Titans Villains for Hire that killed Ryan Choi so cheaply is writing Mr Terrific. I would give him another shot, especially on such a good character. Krul's relaunch books don't see that great.
Why do people say this?
They want to get any fuel they can to fire up their cynicism rockets.Hell, I'm a cynical asshole and even I chalk that up to simple bad timing, not malice.

I get what you mean, but I would totally try out chocolate coke.
Anyway--I am kinda sad that him and Nicola are leaving Teen Titans, since they've pretty much been the only creative team that's made that book readable since Geoff Johns left it. I might give his new Green Arrow a chance, though.

Green Arrow was by far the title that suffered the most from being a Brightest Day tie inn

McKeever was just starting to get his swing, but I think all the editorial crap chased him off the book.

That family moment at the end, was perfect
On other boards discussing this book people straight up say "JT Krul? No way." which is f'ing stupid. Rise of Arsenal really just isn't going away. It's unfortunate, because Deadman and the Flying Graysons was awesome, and his Green Arrow stuff has been pretty damn solid in my opinion.

If he was canned due to the backlash against all things Cry For Justice/The Rise of Arsenal, then I feel sorry for him.
In an era of DC comics mean to shock and disgust its readers, JT was likely given free reign to write Arsenal's deplorable fall.
Which sucks. If I was him, I'd wonder why something like Identity Crisis gets luaded and praised, yet his series got trampled.
DC is selectively picking and choosing which over-the-top rape and gore fests to keep and approve of.
And JT got suckered.

Not sure what you mean aboutif JT Krull got canned. He is writing two books after the relaunch: Captain Atom and Green Arrow.

Yup. He's writing two titles at DC same as he was previously. He's doing just fine.
Also people ought to note Krul didn't write Cry for Justice. :p

Identity Crisis didn't go so far as to include one of it's main characters strung out on drugs, impotent, and beating up thugs with a dead cat. As much as I dislike Identity Crisis, there's a certain point where it just gets even more silly.
What does that even mean anyhow? Identity Crisis getting kept isn't a big deal. It's hardly (thankfully) referenced anyhow, as is likely Cry for Justice.

At a convention, when asked if Ralph and Sue could come back or if they would be shown as the Ghost Detectives like they were in the Outsides, the editors answered no, the reason being is that bringing Sue back would cheapen the story of Identity Crisis.
This was right after Blackest Night.
That's my biggest reason for wanting it ignored.

I was loving what Chuck Dixon was doing with them in Outsiders. But for some reason Didio doesn't want to use them, thinking they are better off dead.

He had them show up as ghost detectives who helped the team. They were also main characters in on of those oversized DC Halloween Specials that basically had them as supernatural detectives.

Dixon's take was a little too Deadman, but I think he got their voices just right. Sadly, they appeared in the middle of that first arc and seemed to disappear like 3 issues later. And then Dixon left, and took the concept with him. *sigh*

From what I gather (and yes, this is rumor I have heard) Dixon left because he got mad at editorial for changing it's mind about things in mid story arc. One of the things they changed their mind about was him using Ralph and Sue. He was told he could use them and then a few issues later was told that he couldn't.

I thought it was because he didn't want to tie Robin into RIP knowing that it would mean dragging Steph through the ringer after just bringing her back
