I wanna see (and like) this real bad; but the reviews are tepid, and the buzz has been so negative for so long, that I wouldn't be surprised if it flopped. So if I happened to like it, it's very likely that I'll never get to see a sequel. That sucks, 'cuz the GL mythos is so rich in cool characters and concepts, in my opinion.

I haven't read any reviews yet. From the trailers I am guessing that they saddled it up with way too much mythology and make it tough for a new audience to identify with.

Good as the Lord of the Rings films were if you weren't familiar with the source, you really had to work at watching them.

I've heard reviews calling it this year's Jonah Hex. That can't be good....:scared:

But as said above, if the person who said that isn't familiar with the books, they would think that.

And I doubt its 75 minutes worth of nothing

I don't think that's true.

Just for my own sake, I'm hoping that's the problem. I'd much rather it be too geeky than have basic storytelling problems or something.

Anyway, I'm committed. Going to see it with the work gang this Friday.

I really do not like the visual design of this thing. What I am seeing, I find unsettling and I think it is mainly the color scheme. It actually reminds me of Battlefield Earth, which I have not seen either.

I never said that I expected it to be the only problem.

I don't think that's true.

Either do I. I am not familiar with the source material and those movies are very straight forward. You might miss some subtle stuff (I don't know, because I would have), but you would have to be a bit of idiot to not be able to get the gist of what was going on.

I'm going to the midnight showing here in town tomorrow IN 3D!!!! lol I'll probably enjoy it and that's all I really care about. I hope it does well enough for a trilogy because i would love to see Sinestro and his Corp in a big huge knockdown drag out with the green lanterns to Finish it off.

I was torn between 3 and 1/2 and 4.... But I went with 3 1/2 because there were some things that I did not like, though it did not ruin the amount of fun I had in seeing this film. If there was about 10-15 more minutes of really good transition scenes, it would tighten things up and make it a better movie.

It was better than I expected, but I was still fairly unimpressed by it. The origin was done well enough, but sadly, unlike say Spider-Man where the focus is on Peter Parker with the burglar and Uncle Ben's interactions with him really setting him on the path to being the hero he becomes, or Batman with Bruce seeing his parents gunned down, all of which can be done fairly fast, I think Green Lantern as a character suffers from having to have too many characters interacting with him to really set him up as the hero we should see. And the film suffers in that regard.

Granted, we got some neat flashbacks to show why he became a pilot, but once he got the ring, too many variables came into it, and none of them got the chance to shine despite being fairly important characters. None of the Corps really got a notable presence, The Guardians barely get seen at all (which may be in character, but for setting up a movie, it's fairly piss poor to barely show the actual heads of the Corps in my opinion). I'm not just saying that as a fan of Green Lantern comics. The person I saw it with and several non-GL comic fans from the 20 or so people that went to the first showing (which was pretty poor considering Catwoman and Jonah Hex played out to a mostly full audience here) were highly unimpressed for the most part, and didn't seem to care about any of the characters outside of Reynolds and Strong, and couldn't understand why the Guardians and at least Killowog didn't get some more screen time and better characterization.

Now, saying that, I think Reynolds did a FANTASTIC job, and he impressed the hell out of me. Since I heard he was cast, I've been groaning at every mention of the movie because I expected him to be too... him. Reynolds isn't someone I can see playing a serious character, and despite Hal Jordan's cockiness and arrogance, he always struck me as humourous, but in general pretty serious a character. When he's on the job, he is 100% focused on the job. He's not someone who'd sleep in and miss a flight because he spent the night fucking some girl (as the trailers show him doing in the movie). Flying is everything to him. So based on Reynolds range, and I say that as a fan of Reynolds in general, and the trailers, I expected to hate every single second of him in the movie. But outside of that and one other moment that was also shown in the trailers (when he puts on the uniform in front of his friend. "I KNOW! RIGHT?!") I thought he did an excellent job, and really played down the humour he seems to focus on in his other roles.

Mark Strong on the other hand, was Sinestro. From the moment we see him till the moment the film finishes, he was Sinestro. I have no complaints about him whatsoever.

The rest of the cast ranged from piss-poor, to mildly passable. The bad guys chosen were understandable in one character (Paralax), and a complete fucking mystery to me how they thought it could be done and made look good in another (Hector "BigHead McSucksalot" Hammond). Seriously, Hammond is quite possibly the worst choice for super villain in a big budget superhero movie than "Lex Luthor for the billionth time and his giant island of Kryptonite" was in Superman Returns. Every second he was on screen was painful, and over acted. Paralax, on the other hand, is the slightly cuter looking cousin of Galactus from FF: Rise of the Silver Surfer. But utterly forgettable in every way once it starts actually doing anything. What's her face... something Lively... had the acting range of a teaspoon for most of her initial scenes. Thankfully, she loosened up about midway through the movie, and ended up better than I expected her to be for the rest of the film. Once she did, I could finally see some chemistry between her and Reynolds. So kudos to her for improving along the way, I guess.

Tim Robbins and Angela Bassett were wasted though. I hate to say it, but Pam Grier in Smallville was a better Amanda Waller than Bassett was. And Grier sucked. A ton. But she at least felt like she did something on screen.

Overall, I'd rank it 2 and a half on the strength of Reynolds and Strong. It's the only comic movie I've seen I don't see myself going to a second time, mainly because no one else I know is interested in it, and I won't be trying to persuade them. At best I MIGHT be convinced to watch it on tv some night if I'm flicking through the channels with nothing to watch and I spot it. But I won't be bothering with the DVD either, and I doubt I'd see a sequel, unless every single piece of information about it blew me away spectacularly.

Other people I know seemed to have enjoyed it immensely, and good for them. I'm really glad they did. It just wasn't for me.

I liked it, but it wasn't a very good movie. There were quite a few good parts, every scene with Sinestro, his deul with Hal, Hal vs. Hammond, GL showing up at Carol's windowsill.

The bad was the pacing, it wandered without direction in the middle of the film.

I hope it does well. I hope Warner Bros takes much of the criticism serious when plotting the next films. Most of of all I want to see Star Saphire in the next film.

Here's my thing with this movie.

A whole lot in this movie was unnecessary. Why build Parallax up as such a huge menace, killing whole planets, taking out the very best of the Green Lanterns only to have a Green [pun intended] Hal Jordan take him out by himself? I had to roll my eyes at the whole fight, dude can take out whole, most likely far more technologically advanced planets, but Hal is hurting him with missiles and gas trucks? Then tricks him into the sun after remembering one part of the five minute [Though I'll give them that it could have been more time and we just got the cliff notes] lesson Kilowog gave him?

Boo. And what was the whole point of him even going back to OA to ask for help when he didn't get it? They were going to leave Earth to it's own devices before his big speech, and they did after. Sure, they could have been planning to pull Hal back and let earth die, but we didn't see them making that decision. He takes out the big bad and THEN they show up? "Shit..we're late." "Hey, at least we saved him from falling into the sun?" "Yay, we're heroes!' Parallax should have been taken out by a big group of bad ass Lanterns using new, fear overcoming ideas and tactics from Hal. I saw someone post earlier that they explained why Parallax wanted to destroy Earth first. So unless I'm right in that Parallax saw Hal as a threat because of his whole overcoming fear revelation, I missed it, or maybe it was just that humans have enough fear to make him all powerful, I dunno, those are just comic educated guesses to the obvious, but they didn't actually say.

Hector should have been the main bad, and defeating him should have pissed Parallax off for part two, maybe empowering Manhunters with the power of fear to heighten the threat, destroying most of Sinestro's planet, setting up him going bad for part three by harnessing the power that destroyed his people to fight against the weak power of will that couldn't save it. The after credits scene was cool looking, but completely unnecessary and out of place like Simpson said. If Hal could take out Parallax by himself, then why the hell would Sinestro need that power? Maybe that scene takes place after something bad happens to him. That's the only reason it'd make any sense, but as is, it was way out of place, especially for the Sinestro presented to us in the movie. They also dropped the ball on the constructs. They could have done so much with it. We get a nice show when Hal is being shown how to use the ring, and then a few cool moments fighting Parallax on earth, but that's it. They make it a point to drive home that he could do anything he put his mind and will to, and we get trash.

The movie was a mess. A fun mess with some cool bright parts like Sinestro, but a mess non the less. I'll get the Blueray, but this will probably be the first movie besides Hangover 2 I don't see again with another group of friends.

Saw it late last night.

My overall opinion, a good film with some flaws.

I loved the parts on Oa with the other Lanterns, and it needed more of that, less of Earth.

Ryan Reynolds was fine as Jordan. It's clear the writers were trying to ape Downey's Iron Man in the way Jordan was written, but I'm okay with that.

Mark Strong was perfect as Sinestro. Best performance in the movie.

Blake Lively, not that convincing for the part of a vice-president of a corporation, but she's hot so I'll forgive her. :p

Hector Hammond was the weakest part of the film. It would have worked better with Parallax as the primary villain without Hammond as it's avatar.

They should've had Amanda Waller as Hal's main conflict on Earth. Angela Bassett feels kinda wasted in the film.

The after credits scene, yes I agree with what everyone else said. There was no logical reason for that scene. It just felt like a scene tossed out there for the fanboys to drool over.

The CGI was good if slightly unpolished. It could have stood some more work in post production.

I'm willing to just look at the movie purely as entertainment value, and give it ✰✰✰✰ out of five.

But strictly viewing it as a film about the character of Green Lantern, I couldn't give it any more than three stars at the most. And no mention of John Broome and Gil Kane in the credits was a bad move.

If the poll's still open at the end of July when the film's released here I'll vote then.

There are rumours around that there's a lot of film on the cutting room floor, would be interesting to know if this is true and if it had remained in the film if some of the complaints about the film would be addressed.

I know! When you come out of the movie, you're like... well, it wasn't that bad. I kinda liked parts of it.

Then you start thinking about the story and it just keeps getting worse.

The local discount theater has it showing, so I went to check it out tonight. Glad I didn't pay the regular $12-15 to see it, but at $4.25 in 3D on the big screen, it was ok. I gave it 3 stars, but that's probably being a bit generous. I didn't hate it, but not much about it went beyond "generic superhero movie" level.
