This is probably my favorite non-Captain America iteration of this character.
I dig the costume. I like seeing him lead the Secret Avengers. I'm digging the fact that you can see his face, and that everybody knows who he is. I enjoy that he is getting his due, and is such a major dude in the Heroic Age.
I liked Steve Rogers: Super-Soldier, and Onslaught Unleashed. After all of the stuff he's gone through recently, it's good to see him as a respected figure, even out of the Captain America uniform.
Some of his other non-Cap manifestations were about him being disheartened with his role as Cap, disenchanted with the direction of the country, or disappointed by the actions of those in authority. This isn't quite so fraught with politics. It's more about Steve being the hero we expect him to be, either as Captain America or as plain old Steve Rogers.
Since I was a huge fan of the character back in the 70s, and collected a run from the green-and-orange Falcon costume to the Nomad era, it makes me really happy to read some comic books where Steve is enjoying being himself and beating the crap out of evildoers. It's not too dark, it's not too outre, it's just Steve Rogers as the major dude he should be. I've heard it will probably end soon.
So, here's a salute to the Super-Soldier era.
