Oh, man. I got the latest Game Informer in the mail this weekend, and it was bittersweet to see Joe's art on the cover. It made me miss him so much. This is fantastic news.

At first I was like, "Why do we need this?"

Then I read that it was their new take on "Marvel Team-Up" and I was like "That's why we need this."

Psyched. Hopefully it looks better than Ultimates 3 though.

As long as they have a good colorist, it will.

When I first heard the title, I went, "Oh, jeez, do we really need 'Dark Spidey' again?"

The actual idea sounds pretty cool.

With Joe Mad drawing Spider-man, Jim Lee drawing Justice League, and Greg Capullo drawing Batman, all I need is for Steve Skroce to return to comics and I'll be fucking happy as hell.

Glad to see Zeb Wells back writing Spidey, too.

So, with this being an ongoing series, either Madureira isn't going to be the only artist, or they're not expecting this to come out monthly.

Well, probably not. But, he does have quite a bit of lead time. November is a ways away. And he did Uncanny monthly for years.

Awesome news! My prediction: Joe Mad on the first 5 or 6 issues, then another artist, then Joe comes back for another 5 issues, then god-only-knows.

Still excited though. Love both creators.

I don't understand the hate for the title. He's an Avenger. This is Spider-Man teaming up with his friends, most of which are Avengers. Avengers avenge. In the present tense, they are avenging. He's the Avenging Spider-Man.

Seems fine to me.

MAD! doesn't care about continuity. :)
Apparently (or he's been working on this for so long, they hadn't yet designed the new armor yet when he drew those pages :) ).

My bigger concern, though, is that I just don't like that armor as much as the current one.

I'm assuming the 'Avenging' part of the title has more to do with the overall tone of the book:

The writer also said he thinks "Spider-Man's humor works best when the stakes are real," in response to a question about the tone of the series. "That's when the character's the funniest, when he finds the funny in the grim."

Sweetness. Zeb can bring the comedy and the drama (see his "Shed" arc from "Amazing" some time back)' and Joe Mad is Joe Mad (hopefully minus the slathering color job of Ultimates 3), so consider it bought.

And while we joke about the inconsistency of the artist, is there a chance for a rotating art team here? I do recall J. Scott Campbell doing something Spidey related for some time now. Although I think that's attached to Jeph Loeb, I'd really like to see his work on my favorite character.

WhindamPryce
06-13-2011, 01:03 PM
I like Wells, but they really should've found someone more high-profile for Mad's big return to (hopefully) monthly comics. Waid, perhaps.

Yeah, I was also wondering if perhaps that J. Scott Campbell story (should it ever be completed) might find it's way into print under this title. The premise of the book seems like it could make it work as kind of an anthology title with (ideally) high-profile creative teams.

I like this strategy, actually. Pairing Wells up with Madureira will up his profile, and bring him closer to the top tier.

Like a mid-card wrestler getting the rub from working a program with a main-eventer.

The Astonishing books aren't selling too well.

06-13-2011, 02:46 PM
That's a great creative team, but I think the need for a Marvel Team-Up styled book is filled by the Amazing Spider-Man title.

If this means ASM starts feeling more like a solo Spider-Man title, I'm all for it.

The title really needs a "the" at the beginning, otherwise it reads like it is about a third party avenging the wall-crawler rather than a book about him.

It's interesting to see Marvel try out a book with a staggered release schedule in the current market. I suspect issue two will be a monthly title, issue three will be a quarterly title, and issue four a bi-annual.

Yeah I can see that. But it's like, why don't they pair Simone with Jim Lee? Because a pairing with Johns is (although more expensive) also more lucrative.

Yeah I can see that. But it's like, why don't they pair Simone with Jim Lee? Because a pairing with Johns is (although more expensive) also more lucrative.
Well, in that situation, they're trying to give the rub to the JLA book, which is no longer as over as I'm sure DC feels it should be.

Also, if it was a character that Simone was already associated with (as Wells is with Spider-Man) like, say, Wonder Woman, I could definitely see them pairing her up with Lee (especially if Wonder Woman was already in good shape). If I'm remembering correctly, Jeph Loeb wasn't quite the top tier writer before his Batman run with Jim Lee that he was afterward (although Lee had lost some of his positioning at that point as well, so I guess they were both benefiting from working with Batman).

Kind of an interesting concept, at least it finally gives a more detailed look of Peter's time with the Avengers. I've never really felt like we've gotten a good look at how Peter views his status on the team within the actual Avengers books.

Ironically, Battle Chasers was colored by a team of guys known as "Liquid!" :)

The coloring on the book is what I'm most concerned about. Ultimates 3 looked messy and the promo pic really isn't filling me with confidence. The preview pages look great but if the finished product looks like Ultimates 3, I'm leaving it on the shelf.

The missing ingredient is an inker like Tim Townsend, who worked with Mad! pre-Ultimates 3, like on Battle Chasers. Going off pencils makes for an unstable foundation, causing it to look muddy. You need solid blacks.

I guess I don't know who Zeb Wells is, but I no longer trust him to write what I consider to be a replacement for Marvel Team-Up.

A guy who knows this little about Hawkeye is writing the Spider-Man buddy book? Is the characterization gonna be this hollow in every issue?

At four dollars a pop?

No thanks.

Please stop doing movie tie-ins about Hawkeye when you are using the 616 Hawkeye.

He doesn't say those things, need to be told those other things, or act like that.

The Mole Man arc was great.

This was a complete deal-breaker.

NOT worth four dollars (or even the three I paid for it).

A buck-two-ninety-eight, maybe. Nope. Not even that much.

One of those issues I wouldn't mind mailing back, with a kind note.
