View Full Version : Film Nerds: I need movies in which people watch movies

I'm working on a secret project and need to compile a list of movies in which characters watch other movies, or in which another movie can be seen in the background. They have to be real movies that are seen, not fictional ones.

Good examples:

ET watches "The Quiet Man" on TV as Eliot suddenly gets the courage to release the frogs and kiss the girl with the pigtails in "ET".

At the house scene in "Scream", Matthew Lillard explains the rules of scary movies while watching "Halloween".

Bad example:

The gangster movie in "Home Alone" is not a real flick, though it's clearly based on "Angels with Dirty Faces".

I know I can count on you, Bendis Board! I need at least 20 examples.

Edit: (a post from later in the thread)

I'm favoring movies that

a) have actual footage of the picture-within-the-picture shown
b) movies in which scene with the picture-within-the-picture is memorable in some way
c) movies that aren't completely obscure (and neither is the picture-within-the-picture)

"Hello Dolly" in "WALL-E" is, I think, the perfect example thus far.

I believe the original Thing From Another World is playing in the background in John Carpenter's Halloween. No relevance to the story, so presumably just an homage by Carpenter to a favorite movie (and one he'd remake a few years later).

One of the classic versions of A Christmas Carol is playing in Lethal Weapon when Gary Busey smashes his car into Danny Glover's house. The movie's right at the end where Scrooge looks out his window and asks some passing ragamuffin what day it is. Busey machine guns the TV and shouts something like, "IT'S GODDAMNED CHRISTMAS!"

Like, sentient brains? Been long enough since I've seen it that I can't quite recall the scene, but it sounds like it could be the movie "Fiend Without a Face" (or an homage to it).

You are right.

However, Josh was *kinda* right about Tequila Sunrise too, iirc.

Right at the end, just before Louis discovers Lestat again, we see him walking out of a theatre playing Tequila Sunrise.

So while we actually *see* him watching the ones you mention, we all see that he has seen the one Josh cites.

When Harry Met Sally - they watch Casablanca together over the phone.I think this is an homage to Play it Again Sam. I think they did pretty much the same thing.

In Scream they watch a horror film at the party. Don't know which one, but pretty sure it was a real film. Of course in Scream 2 there was a theater scene, but that was a fake film.

My other example was Space Balls, which is totally different but an interesting example. But Aspmo got that already.

In Barton Fink the main character watches dailies of an in production wrestling film. Probably not real, but there is some great film making taking place here.

A very interesting example which probably fails to meet your criteria is Ed Wood. There is more than one screening in this. But the main one is Plan 9 From Outter Space. Definitely a a real film. But the shots shown are of the actors in Ed Wood who are depicted shooting Plan 9 in the film.

In Who Framed Roger Rabbit, there is a scene where a Goofy cartoon is screened in a theater.

For some reason made me remember, Tim Robbins goes the a screening of The Bicycle Thief at the Rialto theater in The Player.

Actually . . . I know how this happened. It is because I was thinking about Ed Wood and there was an Orson Welles (character) cameo in that one. And everyone always said that Robbins should play Welles but he never did . . .

- Proini peripolos (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0093791/) (1987, Morning Patrol) by Nikos Nikolaidis makes a very effective use of movies that play on tv screens in empty houses. It's all noir movies from a time before a catastrophe that had the city end up practically devoid of people. A woman is trying to pass the city on her way to the sea. The scenes on the tv screens often involve a character using a phone, which is a hint that the military police that controls the city has found out where you are.

- Into the Night (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0089346/) (1985) by John Landis also makes a great use of movies screened on tv screens as the scenes often react to or reflect what happens in the reality of the movie Into the Night.
