Although the thing that actually struck me more than the netherspray was just how damn big the hippo was. Had that same sense I get from dinosaurs in the movies. A little reminder that we've still got some giants walking the earth.

Yup.

Our local zoo has a hippo. As part of the display there is a place where you can spin a wheel which makes a mock-up of a hippo do this (using just water).
