What are they exactly? How does it relate to actual screenplays?

its a screenplay you write by yourself. no assignment or pay. you just write it in the hope of selling it. walk into a starbucks youll see one being written :)

Also, in television, a spec script is a script of a currently existing TV show that you write to show your ability to write in someone else's voice. Those are usually only written in Starbucks in LA.

It's also show business short-language for any script written by Phil Spector.

It's a script written, "speculating" that you will ever be paid-- or the script be used. Don't expect more money than you get "up front" (assuming there's an up-front payment contract). Another problem is having at least some of your work used in the final product-- without getting additional payment. Then you get into copyright infringement litigation, which is expensive, messy, and uncertain.

Nothing I want to sell, just stuff I want to get made. Have some kind of portfolio before I go for my bachelors.
