Siouxsie and the Banshees for all 10, but I'm too clueless about goth to know at which point they would be considered goth.

I love all Siouxsie though.

How are we defining goth? Do we include goth metal? Goth punk? Industrial?

whatever you consider it. . I have a bit of mix of most of what you listed.

tho I do eventually plan to do an Industrial list (Front 242, Nitzer Ebb, NIN, and A Split Second would likely take up most of the list :))

Voltaire, Voltaire, Voltaire, Voltaire, Voltaire, Voltaire, Voltaire, Voltaire, Voltaire, and Voltaire.

he's fun live (see him every year at Dragon*con multiple times). . but his songs are simply too "jokey" for me.

I put him in the same vein as Abney Park. . who I LOVE live. . but just don't listen to the CDs that much.

That is precisely what I love about him. In an interview (http://www.egodriven.net/voltaire.htm), he says this of Goth culture:

"If I were to pretend that I am sad ALL OF THE TIME, then I would be just as phony and moronic as those pretending to be happy all of the time."

I am a firm believer in not taking life too seriously. And anyone who can talk about serious, thought-provoking topics in a compelling way while also making me laugh is someone I have admiration for. Voltaire has this in spades, as well as tremendous musical talent and integrity. He is, no joke, one of my personal heroes.

And also, not all of his songs are about eating brains and fucking zombies (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s7fgttCG_nU).

Goth isn't about an absence of joy. It's about experiencing joy in places that conventionally-minded people wouldn't think to look. It's about appreciating beauty where you wouldn't expect to find it. In several cases, the common denominators happen to be things that most folks would find "macabre"--cemeteries, death & dying, the afterlife, spirituality, non-peppy religious icons, beasts of prey, dark sexuality, etc.

Then I'll probably hold off on the industrial until you do that list, though I warn you mine will probably be longer than 10

hmm. . . nice.

*however*, as much as I like Lordi (makes sense, as I'm a huge KISS and GWAR fan), no way, no how, would I consider them "Goth".

but hey, I guess your mileage may vary.

I like that a lot.

Thanks, guys! trypr, you nailed it pretty succinctly, too!

Whether it's a clever Christian Death lyric, the fantastic fashions of the more talented Goths, or that amazing album cover by the Sisters of Mercy referencing The Inferno, Goth puts a smile on my face!

A few more Goth classics worth the mention:

1. "Detonation Boulevard", "Lucretia My Reflection", & "1959" by The Sisters of Mercy.
2. "Christine" by Siouxsie and The Banshees
3. "Orchid Dreaming" by Big Electric Cat
4. "Charlotte Sometimes", "Primary", "A Forest", "One Hundred Years", and "Pornography" by The Cure

Huh... I only recognize about half of these bands. I am goth disappoint.

I was huge into Evanescence just as they were hitting it big. Though when I looked more into other bands I had heard before them in that same operatic metal fusion sound. They ended up being more of a flash in the pan. Huh.. kinda like the relationship I was in at the time. Plus when when I heard some of the older versions of the songs, some of them sounded better, less Linkin Park-y. Meanwhile, bands like Lacuna Coil and Nightwish seem to have a longer and better track record. Though Nightwish sadly split from their lead singer and I never got into their new sound.

Of course that's more metal goth and more modern goth. Most of the ones bert listed were more 80s goth and even some new wave. That stuff's kinda before my time, at least before I really got into my own with music, but I did eventually get into them.

Now they're not goth, but I love how mirthfully mopey The Smiths and Morrisey are. I definitely played then hell out of them while being all melancholy.

Of course kids today don't give a crap about goth. All this emo crap takes goth and mixes it with bits from other genres and fashions like punk, skater, nerd chic, and even preppies. It's turned into a weird hybrid of many subcultures by way of whining about your feelings. Kinda reminds me of how the goth kids resent the vampire kids since goth culture was around first and all these new kids are cribbing their style under a new name.

heh.

that's my age -- that's what I was listening to in the 80's, and that's what I continue to like best (you'll note my "Industrial" list (and also my "Metal" lists in some part) are 80's centric as well :)).

big Smiths fan, but *really* lost intereste in Morrissey after the 1st solo album (which is interesting, as I remained a Marr fan (still love Electronic)). Not sure if I just got older and lost patience w/ Morrissey, but really, every song started to sound the same to me!

I did see the Smiths on tour back then tho (Meat is Murder tour, I believe), with opener, "Jewish, Lesbian, Folk-Singer" Phranc. Still one of the best shows I've ever seen.

I think it all does the rounds: goth just happens to be the label that took off in modern popular culture. Post-punk Gothic-Rock is a bit of a stylistic touchstone, but the scene evolves and changes and diversifies all the same. I think when you're at the age in which you're hunting for an identity the politics of association (practically a cliche in the goth scene) probably bothers you more, but past a point I think it's a moot issue, or an excuse to grumble because clubs aren't playing the music you enjoy. Also I think people are likely to revisit all kinds of post punk music now, with fewer preconceptions.

On which note Zola Jesus (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m2ELsTsqvyk) really deserves a mention here imo.

I am suprised no one's brought up Fields of the Nephilim (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HYaDek7LPvE&feature=related) either: on my actual top ten list, I'd certainly include Sumerland. Flour optional ^_^

*sigh* Wish I could have seen the Smiths too: but although my taste is 80's centric, I was far too young ^_- I have the same problem with Morrissey's solo work as bert.
