Welcome to the Android thread.

Android Market
https://market.android.com/apps/

Amazon app store
In order to install app from sources other than Google .
Settings > Applications > check Unknown Sources
This does lower the level of security on your Android device. You are going to have to be more careful when installing apps out of the Market

Do you want to root your phone? Try Super One-Click (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682) from the people over at XDA developers. Rooting your phones allows you to install custom Android ROMS and install some extra nifty applications.

Android Task Killers Explained: What They Do and Why You Shouldn’t Use Them

If there is one app everyone should have, it is PdaNet (https://market.android.com/details?id=com.pdanet&feature=search_result)
This will allow you to hook you Android device up to you computer for a data connection without any carrier fees.

Top devices per carrier - I want to keep this list small, so maybe 2 phones and a tablet per carrier. This list will be for devices that are available now. As devices are released this list will change. "With Google" indicates you are getting a pure Android device with no added UI from the manufacturer

AT&T's current "4G" phones are a joke. Both in hardware specs and "4G"-ness. The announced devices aren't much of an improvement, but at least have better hardware.

I played with it at CTIA. Fuckin amazing. Great feel in your hands, really light. Easy to use. Although it was running pure 3.0, but will have TouchWiz layed on top of it when it is released.

The Galaxy S 2 was pretty amazing as well. The phone weighed about as much as a piece of paper, and definitely felt like an improvement over the first one. Its the phone I'm waiting for now that I'm off contract.

I turned on 4G for the second time or so yesterday, because I actually had time to sit down and play with it. The speed is awesome. Almost like being on my house's Wi-fi, only not at my house.

Fortunately several of the phones will advise you to turn off 4G (or, in AT&T's case, "4G") when there is no signal so as to save battery life.

For more information on what Dan is talking about, refer to this article at PCWorld (http://www.pcworld.com/businesscenter/article/222046/atrix_4g_speeds_reported_slower_than_3g.html) .

Essentially, AT&T is selling 4G phones, but has not fully flipped the switch on their HSUPA network, so you don't even get what they are calling 4G

Yeah, but you can wait until June or July and get a far superior phone for probably about $100 more. I mean, the fact that new Android phones are still shipping with 2.2 instead of 2.3 astounds me.

Yeah, I believe with the LTE phones because there are separate 3G and LTE radios, they can do voice and data at the same time. Voice over 3G, data over LTE.

AT&T's initial plans were to have LTE launched around June/ July this year. Knowing AT&T, that will be around November/ December. Who knows how the T-Mobile thing will effect that.

Also, T-mobile just said they are looking to double their HSPA+ speeds for 42 mbps within a couple of months.

They always put "theoretical" before that. I think I read something about test runs at CTIA that got to mid 20 mbps. Still a killer speed.

Plus it will require a new device to get those speeds. I have held out as long as I have from getting a new phone in part so that I can get an HSPA+ device. I don't think the current HSPA+ lineup can get the the 42MPS speeds though, and have a limit of 21mbps. Fingers crossed whatever I get this summer can handle the increased speeds.

some of these apps are broken, or don't work on all devices. I am using the Honeycomb music player right now.

I am going to institute something akin to twitter hash tags for the thread. This will gives us quick thread search options. Say for instance someone was posting about an app they were using and wanted everyone to know about. you could put #musthaveapp# or something along those lines at the beginning or end of the post. If someone wanted to find out what apps have been promoted in the thread they could use the hash tag for a quick reference. Once I have categories and tags assigned I will post a legend on the first post for reference.

ZDBox is a toolbox that combines many different apps’ purposes into one easy-to use package. Within, one can find a battery meter, task killer, app manager (with batch move-to-SD and uninstall capabilities), 3G traffic monitor, Do Not Disturb timer (for silencing/airplane-moding your phone at certain times) and an App Lock. This last one was a bit interesting, as it sets up a barrier to access an app with a PIN number, but on a per-case basis. Want someone to be able to pick up your phone to play Angry Birds, but not browse your texts? App Lock is the thing to ensure your privacy.

some of these apps are broken, or don't work on all devices.

So do you find the new music player to be a big improvement?

How does everyone synch their music? As I mentioned earlier I use Easy Phone Tunes to synch to ITunes on my desktop and it works perfectly.
I use Album Art Grabber for cover art - it is good, a little time consuming on initial setup, but easy enough to use.

I wish I could play songs on shuffle by genre. Having my beats mixed in with me classic rock is a pain in my ass.

You mightg want to look injto Easy Phone Tunes if you use ITunes on your computer. It automatically synchs up as soon as you connect.

It definitely looks better. I have a first generation phone, and it did not screw anything up. I am happy with it. Have not played with it enough to find out much more.

Something to keep in mind when looking over prices for Android tablets vs the iPad, is that Apple makes money off of everything in their ecosystem through itunes. They sell the hardware, and make money off of everything you purchase through it. That gives increases their ability to shave some cost off of the device itself. Motorola, Samsung, and other manufacturers do not have this luxury. They have to make more on each device sold because they do not make the same kind of money on the back end.

I have a question.

The wife has an LG Optimus S. We chose this over the Samsung Intercept on the recommendation of the individual at the Sprint store.

So her phone will intermittently and randomly lose 3G. Like, it will just drop for no reason and not come back. Facebook will return an error, so will Words with Friends, etc.

She tried to turn the network off and back on, no joy. The only fix is to reboot the phone. She can still text but not do data activities.

So anything you guys can think of that might be wrong? We are going to have the techs at the store look at it tomorrow probably.

When I'm out and about I turn off GPS, Bluetooth, and WiFi. I also keep the brightness on the screen turned down as low as I can. I also got rid of most of the widgets (kept the clock and the weather). If you're using Facebook or Twitter or whatever, set them so they don't check for updates as frequently or at all.

My phone's been on for the last 5 hours and I'm down to 90% without having used it this morning. That's a lot better than I was getting a couple weeks ago with all that stuff turned on. Of course, once I get to surfing and having fun, the battery level drops like a rock.

I've also heard that setting your background to black or something with a lot of blacks in it uses less battery.

A story came out today in regards to Apple tracking iOS users. GPS tracking is being stored with time stamps. All wifi networks that have been used are recorded. Some people are alarmed by this. This is itself is not the problem. Smartphone users have already agreed to this in the terms of service. The real issue is that Apple does not encrypt the file that stores this data, leaving it vulnerable. Not sure if this is a concern for Android users, however I am sure it is now being looked into.

Here's a review of the Samsung Galaxy S II, which I think is out now in Korea, and will be around the world soon. In case you don't want to read the whole thing, here's the final paragraph:

For a handset with such a broad range of standout features and specs, the Galaxy S II is remarkably easy to summarize. It's the best Android smartphone yet, but more importantly, it might well be the best smartphone, period. Of course, a 4.3-inch screen size won't suit everyone, no matter how stupendously thin the device that carries it may be, and we also can't say for sure that the Galaxy S II would justify a long-term iOS user foresaking his investment into one ecosystem and making the leap to another. Nonetheless, if you're asking us what smartphone to buy today, unconstrained by such externalities, the Galaxy S II would be the clear choice. Sometimes it's just as simple as that.

After picking this phone up at CTIA, I instantly knew it was the phone I was going to wait for after my contract expired. I was glad to see this confirms it.

Also, I know about the Graphicly app...but I prefer the dedicated, comixology app on my iPod touch. I haven't really compared the content between the two, are there books on Graphicly that aren't on the comixology app?

This is what you're talking about, right? Comixology (https://market.android.com/details?id=com.iconology.comics)

I keep seeing it in the icon wheel on the main page of the Marketplace app. (I have no idea if there's a name for that little wheel of icons there.)

If you can't get it through the Market, you can download the install file (.apk) to your phone, and then install it by opening that file in ASTRO or a similar file manager. Note that you need to enable "unknown sources" in Settings -> Applications.

Another solid early review for the Galaxy S 2. Its going to be a dogfight with all of these great phones coming out this summer. No wonder Apple pushed back to September.

http://www.bgr.com/2011/05/06/samsung-galaxy-s-ii-hands-on-2/

We didn’t just grab a Samsung Infuse 4G last night, we also took possession of the company’s latest flagship Android device, the Samsung Galaxy S II. This particular device supports AT&T’s 4G bands which is a welcome feature, and while it looks nearly identical to the Infuse 4G, we have to say… this is now our favorite Android device out of Samsung. With a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 8-megapixel camera, and Android 2.3 Gingerbread all stuffed into a 8.49mm thin body, this phone is the one to beat. Samsung’s 4.27-inch Super AMOLED Plus display looks great on here, and the TouchWiz UI doesn’t seem to get in the way too much — at least not like it used to. With that said, Samsung’s included keyboard is useless due to its lack of autocorrect as you type — we really need to see this fixed as soon as possible. Battery life seems to be more than adequate in the limited time we’ve spent with the phone; specifically, standby time seems like it could go for days. We’ll be rocking away on a review of the Samsung Galaxy S II, but in the meantime, you know where to find the hands-on photos.

You are going to have to find a copy of the APK somewhere and manually download.

*tutorial
From time to time you will have to replace your device due to it being upgraded, or lost/stolen/broken. By backing your apps up you can easily restore them on your new device.
Backup your applications with Astro File Manager You can find it here (https://market.android.com/details?id=com.metago.astro&feature=search_result) at the market.

Open the application>Menu>Tools>Application Manager/Backup
You will see 2 tabs, one that shows installed apps, and the other that shows backed up apps. On the installed apps tab click in the check box of any app you want to backup, then press "backup". Sellected apps will be backed up to your SD card. Everyone that currently has PDAnet installed will want to do this.

You can restore by selecting the Backed Up Apps tab, checking the selected app, then select "restore"

Looking for a good, low cost Android handset?

RadioShack offering HTC Inspire 4G for just $29.99 (http://www.bgr.com/2011/05/09/radioshack-offering-htc-inspire-4g-for-just-29-99/)

http://www-bgr-com.vimg.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/HTC_Inspire_4G.jpg
RadioShack quietly announced on Monday that it is now offering AT&T’s Inspire 4G for just $29.99 with a two-year contract for new AT&T customers and existing subscribers looking to upgrade. Though the Inspire is still a relatively young device that was just released in February, newer dual-core smartphones are already making it look a tad gray up top. Its specs are still respectable, however, and they include a 4.3-inch display, a 1GHz Snapdragon processor, Android 2.2 (Froyo), an 8-megapixel camera, 768MB of RAM, 4GB of storage and HTC’s Sense UI. RadioShack’s price is the lowest we’ve seen from a reputable retailer, and it’s good from now through May 21st.

Once upon a time there was a little story about Motorola ditching Google's location services (http://www.androidcentral.com/motorola-ditching-google-location-services-android-phones) in Android in favor of a company called Skyhook. And just a couple months after that little story came another -- Skyhook suing over unfair business practices (http://www.androidcentral.com/skyhook-sues-google-over-alleged-strong-arming-motorola) after it was shut out and Moto went back to Google's services. And as the lawsuit has continued, a wealth of documents has shed light onto Google's relationships with manufacturers, how it wields control over the platform, and what that all means for you as a consumer.
Nilay Patel of This Is My Next (and formerly of Engadget) does a tremendous job of breaking it down. It's a fascinating look inside some of the decisions that have been made over the past year or so -- and even sheds some light on why Samsung struggled with shoddy GPS for so many months. If you read only one story today, make sure it's this one.

The only drawback is the no 4G. But when I would use a 4G app, I'd likely be at home, where I have Wi-Fi, so it really is no big deal.

No official date other than Summer.

A Google ad was seen that stated it would be available on Jun 8. It was quickly removed.

Looks like Target at least will be selling the device for $200. I am betting that will be the standard price for it.

Looks like this will be one of the hard devices to root though. That and only having 1GB of internal storage are the biggest negatives.

I like that the XOOM has streaming movies, I really do. But 2.99 and 3.99 to rent a film (and 4.99 in HD) seems excessive compared to Netflix's streaming monthly subscription service. I do think the selection of top tier films available online is better than Netflix's, though. I was surprised by the amount of new movies already available.

That's the same price structure as iTunes, as well as most other digital distribution outlets out there.

Netflix will never carry the same "new" content as true transactional services have because of the way they do business. They have no interest in it.

I disagree. Dealing with discs, mailing them out, and having a Netflix hub in every market is pricey. Netflix has already said they want to move more into the digital only side eventually. If and when this happens I can see them offering more new content.

Ok guys...was looking at a few android phones today...I like the Thuderbolt but I hear the battery life is short as shit on it. I also looked at the Droid Incredible 2 which I heard does not have LTE. The LG revolution comes out tomorrow and I hear that it may have some of the same issues as the Thunderbolt...

What are your thought? Should I wait a few more months for something better? (because surely there will be nothing to out top the next, next gen phones *snark)*) My original DInc is holding up but my gosh it's getting slow.

HOOKS had the Thunderbolt and traded it in for the Incredible because of the poor battery life. He says that loss of 4g is not a big deal as he is usually in range of wifi anytime he would do anything needing the better data speeds.

05-25-2011, 10:51 AM
Jason, thanks a lot.

That's what I was wondering because I don't think that 4G LTE is that much of a big deal as of yet, but on the other hand, if I was gonna get a new phone, may as well get something that future upgradeable. May keep my eyes open for whatever else is coming out later in the summer. I slightly regretted getting my Dinc because Verizon got the EVO later and I was a bit envious of the screen...heh!

Let's just say, with the Incredible 2, I don't have to worry about using the phone and the battery already being dead. Even after I have the brightness dimmed to damn near black, 4G and wifi off, and every widget turned off.

Basically, if you are always by an outlet and want a really cool landline, get the Thunderbolt.

The Incredible 2 is a smart phone that works as it should. And doesn't force you to plug in every other hour.

ADDENDUM: Jason, I believe what I actually said was "the Thunderbolt sucks battery life like a 22 year old white girl and a football player."

Hey Jason, since you are thinking of getting the device, I wonder if you know how easy it is to root the HTC Sensation?

It is supposed to have a locked down boot loader, making it difficult to impossible.

HTC recently stated they are no longer going to do this. It is unclear whether or not the Sensation will be affected by this as it was in production before this. There is a previous post on this as well

it allows you to install applications that require greater access to the system, and get passed the carrier and manufacturer restrictions. You can install custom Android ROMS that might offer a better UI or features for you.

Well, one example is the Netflix app..

It only officially works on a small handful of phones, but if you are rooted, you can install it on several other phones.
