View Full Version : Favorite Sesame Street Skits?!?

There are "classics" I've loved since I was a child (remember "Monsterpiece Theater, starring Alistair Cookie"?). But they keep pumping them out, and every once in a while I stumble across a new one on Sesame Street's YouTube channel which I really enjoy.

For example, here's a recent skit based on the show "The Closer".

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JIX0LsYuUHA

I watched it kind of stunned, and found myself asking "do the Street writers REALLY think the children are going to get these references? Or CARE that they took the trouble to make the puppets kind of dead ringers for the actors"? Then I realized that those writers have got to be, to a large extent, writing and producing many of these things largely for their own enjoyment, and maybe for the small number of adults watching with their kids on TV and/or on the YouTube channel.

Anyway, go to the channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/SesameStreet

And look around. You'll find the classics you might barely remember from your childhood, as well as newer skits, including a lot of pretty nifty guest appearances from current celebrities.

Any favorites there? Or any skits you remember but can't find there?

I seem to vaguely remember loving a bit where Don Music wrote a song about the word "flabbergasted." I have not seen that bit in at least 22 years. It's gotten to a point where I think I may have made it up.

Gotta go with the classic, Me, Claudius (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RSOu5C55kUA), hosted by that erudite pipe-smoking (and eating) "Monsterpiece Theatre" host, Alistair Cookie.

I'll return to Monsterpiece Theater too (thanks, suedenim for sparking that...).

As a child I lived in an environment which at least let me know that more was going on in those skits than what was obvious to me, a small child. I'd heard the Masterpiece Theater theme aside from that and kind of knew it meant something really smart. I'd seen some of the books/movies mentioned in the skits sitting on shelves or flipped by on TV, even if I didn't understand them. I KNEW more was going on in those Sesame Street skits because of that.

Go back and watch them now as adults though, and you'll see how incredibly rich these were. The Sesame Street YouTube channel only has a few of them though, so just go to the front page of YouTube and search the term "Monsterpiece Theater" (http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=Monsterpiece+Theater&aq=f) (and/or possibly the alternate spelling "Monsterpiece Theatre (http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=Monsterpiece+Theatre&aq=f)"). I think maybe there were/are HUNDREDS of these, because they've been doing them for 30 years. And a huge number of them are just plain genius comedy.

Put Down the Duckie! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UiQsaEdJ1aI) Take a look at all of those late 80s celebrities!

Or for those who prefer... here's the original inspiration more of us probably remember... the Rubber Duckie song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mh85R-S-dh8).

I used to like the filmed pieces more than the muppet stuff. My favorite as a kid was this video of a rubber ball rolling down this weird Rube Goldberg type machine. It fascinated me.

Another 80's celebfest: Who are all the people in your neighborhood, with Martina Navritilova, Barbara Walters and Ralph Nader (odd combo, that) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dd9L_o_WLJY&feature=related)

You know I never realized (or forgot) how many versions the show did of that song. If you YouTube search "Who Are The People In Your Neighborhood" (http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=Who+Are+The+People+In+Your+Ne ighborhood&aq=f) it quickly becomes apparent they did and redid the song over and over again with different "people". Including a Ben Stiller version (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O_yohVlVbEA).

Heh. Puppet Munch...

Like with The Closer skit this is DEFINITELY one which is ALL for the adults (watching or making it). Maybe even moreso, since if an appropriately aged kid even KNOWS what L&O:SVU is... well... that would be wrong.

I totally misread the title of this thread as "Favorite Sesame Secret Six" which I think we can all agree would be awesome.

I personally always liked the ones with Big Bird and Oscar.

will.i.am does a surprisingly good appearance (considering how bad the Peas suck in the past few years) on The Street:

I don't know if he has a similar "real world" song to this, or if its original, but I like the clever play on his own stage name (the "I am" repetition in the song), and the very good (if somewhat generic) message about self-esteem for kids.

So... Bert as Deadshot, Ernie as Catman. Big Bird as Scandal, Snuffy as Bane. Who else?

I dunno. I think I'm feeling a McDonaldland Secret Six more.

Birdy as Scandal. Grimace as Bane. Hamburgler Deadshot. Ronald as Catman. Fry Guy Ragdoll.

The Twin Peaks sketch seemed similarly adult aimed to me. The Darkwing Duck Twin Peaks even moreso.

Sesame Street does it AGAIN. Everyone's favorite glutton is back, in a GREAT video, spoofing a very recent hit pop song.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-qTIGg3I5y8

This was just posted on Tuesday, so its nice and fresh (its worth noting its gotten about 3 million views in about a day and a half!). They never disappoint with their song spoofs/parodies/adaptations.

For the people out there who don't listen to radio, and don't know the song its based on: Click here for the original video. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fWNaR-rxAic) Cookie doesn't really ape the video, just the song, but since the original video is kind of dumb and inappropriate for adaptation, I don't blame him!
