And then wind up filling in the hole from the period you stopped buying it?
I started buying Batman during the Breaking of the Bat storyline and then I'd buy it for a few years. I quit for a year and came back during Cataclysm, buy it for a few years and then stopped again for a few months only to be brought back in by a creative team or storyline...then later on I went back and bought the issues I was missing.
You?
I know many are now trade waiters and comics are old school, but figured I'd ask.

Yes.
Currently Action Comics is on the dropped list, but it'll be back on the buy list once Superman returns to HIS title. And I have Booster Gold dropped, but with Jurgens returning with #44, I'll start buying again.

In college I quit pretty much all of my books. Daredevil, X-Men, Spider-Man, Ultimate Spider-Man and Ultimate X-Men plus a bunch of other titles.
About 4 years later when I get back into it, I just dived back into X-Men, Spider-Man, and the Ultimate Universe.
I didn't hunt back issues for those.
With Daredevil, I went back and hunted down the 20 or so issues I was missing and filled those slots before reading the current stories.
I also wound up adding new books like New Avengers which I hunted down back issues (Minus #20..still need that one) and Hulk. Annihilation and others.
I wound up from being a 5 or 6 title guy a month at the end to a 30+ title guy again.

My Chuck Austen issues went to ebay during the great purge of my college years.
Along with a lot of early Ultimate X-Men stuff. :(

Sometimes I'll drop a title and then when it gets canceled I go back and track down those issues to finish the story out. :nonono2:
I'm thinking about tracking down:
Birds of Prey #118 - 127 (my buddy bought me issue 8 for Christmas completing my collection).
Shadowpact #18 - 25 - actually liked this title, but needed to trim back.

Ha! I ditched Hellblazer with issue 250. Pete Milligan hadn't impressed me since X-Statix (remember that X-Men run? Yeah...) Anyway, the fact that my Hellblazer collection was one of my largest uninterrupted runs in addition to the hype of issue 275 got to me. I broke down and bought nearly two years worth of issues in the cheap bins at NYCC!
Fun addendum - the stories ain't half bad! Pete's best stuff in quite awhile!

Not often, I tend to stick with a book that starts going down hill as long as I've collected it for awhile and feel it's safe to assume it will get better. One book though that comes to mind is Detective Comics. I finally dropped it with issue #869 only to find Jock and Snyder starting a new run on issue #871. After hearing so many good things about it I went and picked up #871, #872 and #873 and added Detective back to my pull list. I'm debating filling in the gap of #869 and #870 as well as the annual but I haven't decided for sure yet, maybe when money picks up.
Another book I dropped recently was Daredevil when Black Panther took over the book but after hearing a bunch of great praise for the book I decided to go back and pick up a few issues, haven't read them yet though.

Go pick up those two issues of Detective Comics!
I'm really loving the Black Panther Man Without Fear title. It's the best this character has been since Priest and the art is phenomenal. Francavilla's work is amazing and I feel we'll look back and think, I can't believe this title was able to score this artist.

did that with nightwing a few years ago. Havent done that for another book since.
Currently in the process of doing this. I've bought Fantastic Four off and on for years, and while I have no intention of buying every back issue of the title since the beginning, because the Essential and Visionaries trades serve just as well, I do at least want to get from the beginning of volume 3 forward. The last time I returned to the title was at the beginning of the Hickman run, and I need to fill in several gaps in my volume 3 collection. I wouldn't bother for many titles, but with FF, I dunno, it's just something special.
And once I've done that, I may also go from just after the Byrne run to the end of volume 1. Maybe.

Pretty much every Marvel and DC title in my collection has (or has had) a gap in it from some point in the mid to late 90s, and I'm always on the lookout to fill those in (though usually only from the quarter bins - or at the very most dollar bins or an equivalent sale).
I've managed to fill in almost all of the X-Books (the main exception is X-Factor) - just finished up Generation X last month.

I tend to stick with a title through a downturn in quality because I hate gaps.
Saying this though I dropped JLA, JSA & JSA All Stars because they were making every effort to destroy my interest in the titles - there's still that background thought that I'll have to go back and get back issues to fill the gap when the titles picks up again.
I dropped Daredevil until he's "Reborn" (Despite the good things I've heard I've never been a fan of Black Panther and just can't get into him)
I stuck with Superman, even through War of the Supermen but JMS managed to kill my interest in the book (another one I'll probably have to track down back issues on once the title is resurgent).
I dropped Action Comics when it was announced it would be Lex Luthor and of course based on feedback I now regret it. I'll pick up the trades for that one.
Thinking back, I drop DC more often than Marvel.
This year I finally made the decision not to add Event Tie-ins to my pull-list (Marvel or DC) and instead wait to see if their actually any good. I have a heap of shit from the last few years of mini-series that add nothing to the main event story.

I did that with Ultimate Spider-Man (http://606studios.com/bendisboard/showthread.php?t=194482). I stopped reading it after the second hardcover because I kept putting off buying the third volume. Cut to years later, I had the itch to read it again and bought several hardcovers at once.

Yeah...I stopped getting Ultimate Fantastic Four after the Devils storyline (#39-41), then picked up the title again when Ultimatum hit (#58-60) and started to search the back issue bins for the four story arcs I missed.

It's even better to fill in the holes on the cheap isn't it!
Plus I try to go back and read those issues and I'm usually happy I did as often I'm just trying to make room in the budget you know.

Give Black Panther a shot. I think you might just like it.
One reason I know I'm enjoying it is because I felt I could jump right in reading it. There are a lot of titles I'm woefully behind on.

I did that with Spawn about ten years ago. I had read the first two years, dropped it, and then picked it up around #100. I ended up dropping it again around #140, after having filled the gap.
I then sold off the entire run up until that point. :surrend:

I'll get behind by about a year or so, then binge on a comic all at once. But oddly, my very favorite is one I've had trouble with.
After New Mutants turned into X-Force, there was only so much I could take of the liefield doofiness and the butchering of the characters' backstories and motivations before I bailed.
I didn't hear until later that after they bailed for Image, several good writer artist combos including Warren Ellis in their number did turns on X-Force. However... I have this impression that to get to that good stuff, I have to wade through some stanky freaking action-lined 200-toothed shoulder pad wearing Liefield-ness...
So I'm kinda working up to it... I know I also let my original New Mutants subscription lapse about the time we were dealing with Puff-Headed Gossamyr and the Louise Simonson/Bret Blevins run...
So really, there's this whole period from right about the point that Claremont left til the point that Liefield left that I just wasn't interested. It's a plot hole I kinda want the cliff's notes on so I can just skip it altogether. But it also feels like I'm doing the characters a disservice to ignore great flipping wodges of the plot. Such as it was in the 90's. I'll sit down and slog through it to get to the good stuff eventually... but just not yet.
None recently, but I have been considering going back to DMZ and Northlanders and picking up what I'm missing with those.

The first title that came to mind when I read this thread was "Amazing Spider-man". It was the first series I collected with issue #350! I thrilled with the introduction of Carnage and the anniversary issues complete with Hologram covers! Then came the clone saga. I persevered and I endured. I even survived Byrne's cob job that was Chapter One. But when the title restarted with a new issue #1 my interest was lost. I lasted until issue #7 and then left. But then came news of JMS taking over and I decided to hop back on. However Ezekiel and this new Spider mythology did not do it for me. I lasted though until Osborn showed his "O" face and I was gone again. I picked here and there for big stories hoping it was getting better but was lost again with the nonsensical Fuck you to the fans that was "One More Day". Positive word of mouth has me contemplating picking up the Brand New Day and Gauntlet PHC's. I'm on the fence but who knows.
Batman was another early series I collected that has been dropped and picked back up. I initially started around Knightfall. I was caught up in the story and was beside myself with fanboy mark out when Bane broke Bats back. But the Az-bat tired on me quickly and I was out. I came back for Knightsend and Prodigal and remained until sometime after Brubaker wrapped up his run. I came back briefly for "Hush" and Winnick's "Red Hood". I jumped all over Morrison's run until finances and lack of a nearby comic store had me dropping it for trades which ended after "R.I.P.". I love the character and have plans to pick up some of the new trades so I'm not completely out.
The last one that I can think of which I did this with was "Uncanny X-men". I jumped on board with Portacio's run which saw the introduction of Bishop. I was a huge fan of that run which took me from the return of the White Queen to X-Cutioner's Song to Joe Mad's run to Onslaught. I lasted until some guy named Austen came on and it SUCKED!!! I came back when Brubaker came on board. I was excited since I'd loved his Cap issues. But I'm not a fan of outer space X-men and was gone after Messiah Complex even though I loved it. Now I'm a trade waiter instead of a monthly collector. Finances and not having a nearby comic shop to peruse led to this. Plus I love a full story in one sitting.
As for series I dropped only to have them canceled shortly after....that would be "New Warriors" for me. I loved loved loved that series until it hit the wall hard after Nicieza left. I lasted until the Scarlet Spider issues only to have the series get canceled shortly thereafter. It is my goal now to track down those last ten or so issues just to complete my run. They don't have them in the three comic book stores in Vermont that I know of. One day I'll track them down and complete that run ;-) No matter how much they suck.

Not for an extended period, but yeah. The two most recent examples I can think of:
-Right around Week 20 of 52, I found myself losing interest and the issues kept coming weekly. So I stopped. But then I heard some positive buzz about things picking up when the book was around Week 30 or so. I went back, got the ten issues I'd missed, resumed, and ended up really digging the series a lot.
-I dropped USM around issue 70 or thereabouts (again, found myself losing interest). But I came back right around issue 97 (the start of the Clone Saga arc, whatever that was) and hung around until it relaunched. Then I hopped off again.

So I'm reading the Teen Titans issues by Henderson I picked up starting with #79 and find her storytelling to be very choppy. Each page she's bouncing back and forth between Static's story and the Teen Titans, but the transitions are all over the map. The pacing is off and the sound effects for those affected with the virus are terrible.
I'm not sure I'm going to make it through these 10 issues.
I am more interested in Static.
