Over the last few months, Google has received more than 100 copyright infringement warnings from MPAA-affiliated movies studios: most are directed at users of Google's public Wi-Fi service but others are meant for Google employees. The MPAA is thus warning the search giant that it might get disconnected from the Internet.

"Copyright infringement also violates your ISP's terms of service and could lead to limitation or suspension of your Internet service. You should take immediate action to prevent your Internet account from being used for illegal activities," the movie companies write in various letters, according to TorrentFreak. Although the copyright holders use strong language, these notices are nothing simply warnings, and typically do not lead to legal action.

Every year, the major movie studios and record labels send out tens of thousands of warnings to Internet users suspected of sharing their content using P2P software, in order to persuade them to never download anything again. The copyright holders hire third parties to track down people who share certain their content. These companies then in turn request the files from others, log IP addresses of those who share files with them, look up the corresponding IP addresses, and automatically send out infringement notices.

ISPs are then asked to forward these notices to the customers in question, but in this case, Google has also been contacted. A few of the ones sent to Google are on behalf of Paramount Pictures and Columbia Pictures for sharing The Fighter and The Green Hornet, respectively.

I don't know who's dumber this week.. MPAA for threatening this, or Sony suing everyone in sight to get something off the internet :D

It was pretty obvious this was coming after they were allowed to sue torrent search engines.

The MPAA would be fine with watching the world burn, if it means an extra percent of profit share for Dreamworks.

I hope they actually do that. Mid-trial.

Of all the companies to pick a fight with, the MPAA picks Google. Why don't they try to bring down Facebook while they're at it.

Isn't Google basically the entire internet?

I'm tired of the movie and music industries pointing fingers at downloaders for dwindling returns instead of looking at their escalating prices and diminshing quality of product as being THE causation of it. No, instead go after your consumer and persecute them. That will help things out. Personally, I don't even think of buying a product from someone without being accosted first. Common courtesy isn't it?

Naah. First they 404 the MPAA's website among 100,000 OTHER sites for the movie industry. THEN buy them. THEN repost those sites under the google umbrella. THEN make the back catalogs of more than a couple of thsoe studios free to watch on YouTube.

Why not be thorough?

You would think they would have enough intelligence not to threaten a company many times bigger than them like this, but they really are idiots.

Correct me if I'm wrong but weren't the biggest blockbusters released during the "age of the Pirate Bay"?
Avatar, Harry Potter, Dark Knight, Spiderman,... didn't exactly hurt for box office

Methinks that when someone Google-Searches "MPAA", they should add the suggestion "Did you mean: dumbasses"

Exactly! But they ignore all of that and instead focus on the overall box office and see any decreases as the result of piracy instead of a more selective consumer base necessitated by them raising prices among other things such as quality. People still see movies and guess what? Downloaders still see movies and spend money too! You can't replace the theater experience. The economy is on a downturn right now and people have to be more selective in their expenditures.

My DVD/Blu Ray library is immense yet I may have stumbled across a downloaded film or two in my day. Guess what? If it was good, I still bought it. Its still in my collection. I double dipped. Triple dipped if you consider going to the theater as well. Going on a witch hunt after those you want to spend money on your films is not going to entice them to do that. Instead focus on the reasons why one may opt to download a film, see how you can diminish those reasons, or how you can make them still want to spend money on your product. Instead they go the frivolous lawsuit route and scream about how they are being victimized. You want to talk about being victimized??? I saw Bio-Dome....in the THEATER!!!! I paid for that steaming pile of shit...where's my compensation for that? At the very LEAST that warrants a free download or two...Fuckers!

I bet the accountants for the studios could prove that none of those movies made a dime! And it's all because of those pirate bastards!

Let's all pirate movies, music, and TV! It's ok because I don't like the companies behind them and they all have money anyway. And it's their fault for not being cheaper/more accessible/better.

But it kills the DVD sales. Where most movies make their real money.

Google is actually very different from those companies but no one in this thread seems to be aware of it and thus continue to mock the MPAA for threatening an action that they could actually carry out.

Other than Google being the biggest and most widely used search engine, how is it different from Microsoft's Bing?
