Dude behind me in line at Midtown Comics was trying to buy 20 copies this morning. He was perturbed when they said he could only buy 5.

There was also a lady ahead of me buying 5 copies, but when they offered her free DC posters, she also asked for 5, saying this was all gifts for her kid and his friends. And then I got sad, because the thought of her saying "Hey, kids, I bought you all copies of that comic where that superhero dies!" is kind of depressing.

Or maybe they are hoarding copies so they can say they sold out and start charging the people off the street a premium.

I had a subscription at my LCS for Cap, so after reading #25 I threw it on ebay for cover price and got over $100 for it (I threw 1-24 on ebay the same day and got $100 for that, too). I've since used the money to buy Brubaker's Cap run in omnibus form, but I always wonder about the guy who paid so much for that one issue. Does he still think it's worth a lot or does he realize he paid so much for an issue that's only worth a tiny fraction now?

Maybe if Marvel had included collectible trading cards with FANTASTIC FOUR #587, the reaction would be different.

Maybe. The reactions interest me. Heaven knows, if this was 1991, I would've been freaking out about this book and I'd be trying to get my hands on two copies, one to open and one to keep locked in a safe. Now, I didn't bother buying this issue. If I was a fan of Fantastic Four, I would've been extremely upset to miss out because of the mad rush for the comic. I was lucky to get the new suit spider-man book and captain america #25, so I didn't experience the frustration of people hopping on the bandwagon of something I loved, and missing out because of it.

I don't know.

Maybe the polybag was to keep people from reading the book at the store? Maybe it's more than a collectible grab-bag? I don't know. But all of this is interesting.

I think your right, I thought the reason for the bag was so that people wouldn't be spoiled, it didn't cost anymore than it normally does I don't think. So I don't understand the polybag hate either, and if you pre-ordered the book you didn't have to worry about hoarders.

Yeah, sometime in the mid-90's Marvel had cards that were stapled into the books and were inappropriately long and always caused the pages to flail about back and forth when I'd be trying to read them. Removing them was damn near impossible. It was one of the worst things that has ever happened. I still have not yet fully recovered.

Yeah. From what I read it was to keep people from being spoiled, especially after the last few times where either the actual cover or the variant spoiled the big death/plot twist by those stores who just put it on the shelf without thinking that maybe people still want to be surprised in this day and age.

I'm sure it was also a marketing stretagy to get it to "pop" off the shelf too, which isn't a bad thing.

jacoblb
01-27-2011, 09:47 AM
I'll have to ask my shop if they set a limit. I only read the collections so the fact it sold out in my neck of the woods doesn't bother me. I don't think it helps that no one can buy a copy off the shelf. Perhaps they're only speculators wanting the books anyway, but it doesn't do a shop much good if a new customer hears about it and wants to jump on board and can't. Doesn't do the creative team much good either. I wonder if the issue sold better digitally too? I'd think so.
I bet the P2P has really soared on account of a sell out. And the wait for the next printing is a month away.
But it does suck to wake up and avoid comic book sites and message boards, only to have the death spoiled to me in a Yahoo! link header. I guess I look at it like this: there's only 4 and one dies, so there's not much to surpise. For me, I am looking forward to Hickman's story execution. I bet it's going to be a great read. His FF has been the best I've ever read.
