Anne Hathaway Wins Selina Kyle Role in 'The Dark Knight Rises'

BURBANK, CA, January 19, 2011 – Warner Bros. Pictures announced today that Anne Hathaway has been cast as Selina Kyle in Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight Rises.” She will be starring alongside Christian Bale, who returns in the title role of Bruce Wayne/Batman.
Christopher Nolan stated, “I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Anne Hathaway, who will be a fantastic addition to our ensemble as we complete our story.”
In addition, Tom Hardy has been set to play Bane. Nolan said, “I am delighted to be working with Tom again and excited to watch him bring to life our new interpretation of one of Batman’s most formidable enemies.”
Nolan will direct the film from a screenplay he wrote with Jonathan Nolan, from a story by Christopher Nolan and David S. Goyer. Nolan will also produce the film with his longtime producing partner, Emma Thomas, and Charles Roven.
“The Dark Knight Rises” is slated for release on July 20, 2012. The film will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

Seriously though these annoucements really have me wondering which direction the Bat franchise will go. Dark Knight ended with Batman as a vigilante, so can we see the rise of a bunch of vigilantes in Catwoman and Bane. Or perhaps the GCPD branch out to other costumes to bring in Batman?

I suppose the Hugo Strange rumors had such legs because it made sense with the role and the movie storyline. I have faith that Nolan will do justice to both characters and fit them in seamlessly.

Memento's Natalie (Carrie-Anne Moss) is extremely clever and manipulative. She's got motive, she's intelligent and she's a cold-hearted bitch.

Though a remake, Ellie (Hilary Duff) was a strong character in Insomnia. Never a damsel.

In the Batman films, though Katie Holmes' interpretation of the character is weak, I thought Maggie Gyllenhaal had a better take on the flawed Rachel Dawes.

And Inception has two: Ariadne (Ellen Page) and Mal (Marion Cotillard) who is a fucking fantatic antagonist.

Scar Jo seems weak compared to all of these ladies in The Prestige, though I don't know how much of that is carry over from the novel.

Bane they can make work. Venom is basically a super-steroid. Just take the super out of it. Don't have him flipping cars or anything, but I don't think him bench pressing 800 lbs. is really that unrealistic. There's people that do it. On top of that, classic, real Bane is very intelligent, a master manipulator and strategist. Anne Hathaway as Catwoman is fine too. I'm not sure Anne can do the action scenes since I don't think I've ever seen her in an action film, but as the Selina Kyle scenes she works very well.

There are even people who are suggesting, based on an earlier report that said there will be two female characters, a love interest and a female villain, that since this report lists Hathaway as JUST Selina Kyle, we won't be seeing Catwoman. I believe its because its also been rumored that this movie is loosely based upon the "Prey" arc in LOTDK, which featured Hugo Strange, Catwoman, and a cop Hugo Strange trains to be an anti-Batman (presumably Bane in this case).

Think about it. In what way would the story be different from Batman Begins? At least the story between Bruce and Ra's. It would be almost exactly the same.

Logically, she wouldn't be alone, so she'd bring the surviving members of the League of Shadows(which I'm sure are many).

It's just boring. And after what we got in TDK, would just not be good. At all.

Not to mention that Nolan kind of left whether or not Ra's was immortal ambiguous, and Talia is really boring without her father around.

Also, Catwoman deserves to be done justice on the big screen. Especially after two attempts, one being a solo movie.

Why does it need to come full circle? Or better yet, why do we need Talia for it to come full circle?

She's not needed. Ra's Al Ghul's story arc ended with him going over in that train. To revisit it, purely from a storytelling stand point, is lazy.

Especially after getting what we got in TDK.

Going from Scarecrow and Ra's Al Ghul to Joker and Two-Face and then to Talia Al Ghul? That's not a good thing.

But most of this is moot anyway since Catwoman and Bane are in this movie. Hopefully with some cameos from guys like Black Mask or Hugo Strange.
