What a MOVIE.

I go back and forth with the Coens, they make a movie I adore, then they make two awful ones, I lose my love for them every second film. I never cared for the Big Lebowski (have never finished it) but they have done many films I did love.

But this one, holy crap, it's just a huge ball of entertainment. I loved it. The acting is spectacular all the way through. I don't remember the original film adaptation that well, but this is just astounding, fun and literary at the same time, and good up until the very last scene.

Who saw it?

I love the John Wayne version ( fully deserved his Oscar ) and I've seen the trailer for the remake.

I'll give it a view.

I am amused that Jeff Bridges is appearing in True Grit and also guest-starring in Tron: Legacy during the same month.

DUDE!

The Big Lewbowski isn't a favorite of mine. I can quote large swaths of "Raising Arizona" from memory, however, and I adored "Fargo" and a number of others. Not fond of Barton Fink or No Country for Old Men.

Blasphemy! I know the pacing turned a LOT of people off, but I have SO much love for that movie. Javier Bardem is like the ultimate badass, even if he's never really fleshed out. And I can forgive him not being fleshed out, because I never felt he needed to be. Like Michael Myers or something, trying to make him human would only detract from the character, IMO.

Barton Fink is my favorite Coen movie... maybe one of my favorite movies ever.

Loved this movie so much. My cousin wasn't impressed, but she's weird.

This might be the Coens most direct and straight-forward movie. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but those expecting the twists they're accustomed to delivering might be disappointed.

It's a good western though, probably the best I've seen since Unforgiven. The acting is great, the dialogue and cinematography was great... ok, it's a great western, on second thought. :)

But for the love of all that is... I don't get how Gail doesn't like Big Lebowski, given that it seems to be right in her wheelhouse. This is the woman who wrote Deadpool, and Secret Six and Welcome to Tranquility! They seem quite similar in terms of sense of humour.

Good question, as it is a board rule that you have to love that film...I'm not sure why we let Gail get away with it.

About the only Coen brother movie I couldn't stand was No Country for Old Men.

But I don't count that one as a true Coen brothers film as there was no Peter Stormare. You can't have a true Coen Brothers movie without him. Hudsucker Proxy being the only exception.

Going to try and see it in the next couple days. Along with Black Swan.

Just got back from The Fighter. Fantastic.

Just got back from seeing it for an early birthday dinner and a movie with friends. I loved it but I don't see how it's that much different than the first one. The tone is a little darker in the new one and John Wayne was really hamming it up (in a good way) in the original but other than that, a lot of the dialogue was the same and there were only a couple minor deviations from the original.

Still, a great movie and Bridges was fantastic.

I just watched A Serious Man this week. Was ok, but not my favorite.

I'm excited for True Grit, as I really love a good period film. Planning to see it this weekend.

But Gail, was it better than Jonah Hex? ;)

Beautiful western! (I still need to see last year's Coen Brothers film, though!) Unlike the original, everyone can act in this one (sorry, Glen Campbell)!

Jeff Bridges (and everyone, really) was fantastic. I was nearly dying when they went to the store the first time and he was just kicking the kids, then came out and did it again.

There was an interview where Brolin said he wished the coen's had directed Hex. I do too.

If you like a period film, check out the Kings Speech.

In a similar way, I heard Jimmy Palmiotti say on his podcast that he almost wished that this came out while Jonah Hex was being made, show that you can do a straight western and still make a successful movie.

And yes, the fact that Gail's now a fan of Lebowski disturbs me, too. :mistrust:

A 35-45 year old Clint Eastwood would've made an excellant Hex.

You'll have to settle for him directing, Cam. That's not a bad thing though, the man can direct.

Brolin didn't have the right look.

Nice job with the scar make up, though.

Yeah, that was similar to what I said a few months back. I was saying that I'm sure you could make a GREAT Hex film that was true to the comics, but the problem is that it would likely never get made in the first place because the Western is pretty much a dead genre. It's like how Pirates of the Carribean, the first successful pirate movie in god knows how long, had to have all these zombie armys and giant creatures in it.

I finally saw the movie and must say it's one of the Coen's best.

The thing that impressed me the most was how they could take the same story, most of the same dialogue, and even use the same scenery and camera angles as the 1969 version and still produce a totally different feeling. That proves to me that they are masters of the craft.

I'm about halfway through writing my review, but one thing that I have noticed is that the people that really hated this movie, hate because its not a John Wayne tribute. That argument strikes me as really shallow -- this movie not only refuses to be a tribute to the original, it does everything it can to undermine the male bravado that the 1969 film struck in viewers.
