Went looking for this thread and was weirded out that such a high profile book had no responses yet.

Anyway, help me out because I couldn't quite figure one sequence out...

Was the suggestion that Killer Croc raped that chick and then sold her into sex slavery...or what? That was my immediate takeaway, but I read it somewhat hastily.

Leading up to the release I wasn't excited for this one. I've been finding the Dick Grayson Batman to be much more interesting, haven't cared for Finch's art of late and wasn't interested in a dark, gory, monster Batman story as was implied from early interviews. But a quick flip through had me intrigued and I bought it. First off, I don't think Finch's art has ever been better. It looks much 'cleaner' than I've ever seen it before and the coloring in the book was very vibrant adding to the overall quality of the art. The Batman titles have gotten very lucky with the calibre of artists but this book is definately the best looking one. And while the gore is a bit played up in the end it turns out to be a nice detective story focusing on a friend from Bruce's past that also allows Batman to mix it up with a couple of classic rogues.

Finch has a nice handle on the dynamic between Bruce and Alfred and I liked the nods to both Batman Inc and Dick's adventures. Penguin hasn't looked this creepy since Danny Devito played him and I was pleased to see a more human looking Croc instead of the Lizard wannabe he's been in recent years.

Solid first issue all around and I'll be back.

I didn't get that vibe from the book. He was strung out on Venom and talking smack with Batman but I got the feeling he was more of an enforcer and not actually involved with the girl beyond that

I thought that the book was decent.

I love Finch's art and the story was solid.

My only real issue with the book was that it was a Bruce in Gotham as Batman story. I thought that the whole point of Batman INC and all that Grant Morrison has set up was to have Bruce active globally and Dick as the Batman in Gotham.

This comic seems to have just said no ... Bruce is still doing his thing in Gotham.

So for me it seems strange to have this book that contradicts what the status quo was supposed to be.

Batman asks, "Who did you sell her to? What was his name?"

And Croc gives a name.

Now I'm hoping this is red herring stuff, but it really sounds to me like the implication is rape and sexual slavery. Finch said he wanted to go dark with this book, so I guess I'm inclined to assume the worst.

What I recall from an early interview on the topic was that the book's sort of meant to offer readers their "Bruce in Gotham" fix. Like, he's mostly global, but some cases are personal enough or important enough that he'll still turn up in Gotham for them.

Practically speaking, the book is probably just meant to let Finch do what he wants with Batman, not unlike McFarlane's grim 'n' gritty adjectiveless Spidey in the 90s, but the in-continuity spin is that these are his rare Gotham adventures.

Yeah, I thought it might be drugs, too, but Batman narrates at the top of the page that the Venom extract is really pricey and he doesn't think Croc could even afford it. But he's clearly hopped up on it, so it makes more sense to me that Croc might've sold this girl to get money to buy the Venom for himself.

Anyway, yeah, if it's not a red herring, this isn't gonna be a Batman book for me. I could do with less skeevy in my superheroes.

That's completely how I read it. I thought that was pretty creepy (and not in a good way), but otherwise I thought it was a decent start.

As for the book itself, I think it serves two purposes:

1. It allows Finch to do what he wants.

2. It gives a certain segment of readers what they want (Bruce Wayne as Batman running around Gotham city).

Of course for sales, books have to be in continuity, so they just throw in a line or two from Alfred acknowledging the wider status quo: "Shouldn't you be in Japan or Argentina?" or whatever it was. Simple enough.

Yeah, while he looks like he's seven or eight feet tall, he reminds me of how he looked the first time I saw him in the pre-Crisis BATMAN #400, one of the first Batman comics I ever bought. Fairly human proportions and facial structure, but fully scaled. I remember at the time he was obsessed with breaking Batman's back. Wonder if that had some influence on the Knightfall storyline?

That original run with Croc wanting to be ganglord of Gotham and all of Batman's enemies coming after him along with the intro to the pre Crisis Jason Todd are some of my favorite Batman comics ever.

That's a happy medium I could live with. With Ryan, prefer the take from Broken City ( and TAS). This is okay.

Really interested in reading the reviews. Not a huge fan of Finch, myself (though on the right book, I dig it). More curious about his writing chops. From reading early interviews, the concept wasn't singing to me.

Finch's art does look great though. I've always loved it.

Hell, I have a sketch of his Batman tattooed onto my arm. I better love it.

David Finch's long-delayed debut as writer/artist on the newest Bat-title is finally here, and it's a surprisingly strong start. He already showed he had some writing chops on a strong Damian/Superboy segment in Superman/Batman #75, but here he's beginning to weave his own Bat-epic. The art is, surprisingly, not as dark and muddled as his usual style, considering that he said this would be the dark, supernaturally-based Bat-book. We don't get all that much here, but as Bruce delves deeper into the main mystery of his childhood friend's disappearance, we'll definitely get there. Finch's art reminds me a bit of Jim Lee, and that's only increased by the fact that the issue focuses on a retconned-in childhood friend of Bruce's. In this case, it's a childhood crush named Dawn Golden, who has now mysteriously vanished. Bruce returns to Gotham to search for her, and his hunt immediately brings him into conflict with Killer Croc and Penguin (yet another Hush comparison). The art is excellent, and the writing is mostly strong and in character, although I wasn't a fan of Bruce's interaction with Alfred. It's a good read, but there's so many Bat-books out there doing excellent things, it'll be interesting to see if this one can find its own niche. Hopefully it'll stay on schedule, too.

When it was announced that David Finch was going to begin working at DC I was eagerly anticipating an announcement tell us what book he will be doing interiors on. Batman seemed like a good fit for the guy. He has a darker style so he would work well in a Batman book. But what I did not expect to hear was that he was going to be writing a drawing his own book. I knew the man could draw, but could he write? I was hoping it wasn't going to be one of those "Oh look at the pretty pictures!!" To say the least this book was not. The art was fantastic, some of his best work, but the writing was great as well.
Anyone interested in Batman and hasn't been keeping up with all the Grant Morrison stuff, this is a great buy. The art is stellar, the writing is intriguing what more can you ask for?

Finally read Batman: The Dark Knight by Finch.

It was okay, but fairly standard. When Batman was on the page the art was dymanic and exciting, but when he wasn't the art was okay.

The story was pretty standard as well.

I'd give it a 7/10.
