Legion of Super-Heroes: The Great Darkness Saga - What do I need to know?

So I've never really read any Legion stories aside from the occasional team up with Superman - what do I need to know before reading Legion of Super-heroes: The Great Darkness Saga? I just picked up the Deluxe Edition because it looks pretty sweet. someone give me a breakdown!!! (or at least point me to the right website).

I just ordered it, too. I read a few of the issues as a kid. You don't need to have a very intimate Legion knowledge to enjoy it, if I remember correctly.

The earliest LOSH that I read was right around the start of the Great Darkness Saga. I knew very little (if anything) about the Legion but it really wasn't necessary. Helluva great story.
