I signed up for the streaming Netflix in Canada and then forgot about it because most of the selections suck and I'm not an old TV watching type of guy as I remember too much of the dialogue to make it funny. But then I figured I either watch something or stop paying and watched Miller's Crossing on Saturday. Such a great movie, I wish the Coens would do more crime movies as they have such a knack for them.
You want them to do MORE crime movies? 50% of their catalogue isn't enough?

I miss snow days.
When you're a kid, snow days are awesome. Especially if they announced them the night before. You got to sleep late, you got to eat breakfast and play, it was cool.
Adults don't get snow days. Nobody says, "Don't come into work tomorrow, Michael. It's snowing!" So I'm going to have to get up and brave snow and sub-zero wind chills to go to work. I'm grateful for the job, I really am, but being a grown-up stinks sometimes.

Inmate gets salami-free meals for Festivus faith
(12-13) 12:31 PST Santa Ana, Calif. (AP) --
An Orange County inmate who disliked salami got special meals after declaring his religious belief in the Festivus holiday celebrated on the television show "Seinfeld."
The Orange County Register reports Monday that 38-year-old convicted drug dealer Malcolm Alarmo King asked for kosher meals at the Theo Lacy jail to maintain his healthy physique.
But sheriff's officials reserve kosher meals for inmates with a religious need.
Judge Derek G. Johnson demanded a religious reason for King to receive the meals and defense attorney Fred Thiagarajah cited his client's devotion to Festivus — a holiday celebrated on "Seinfeld" with an aluminum pole and the airing of grievances.
Sheriff's Department spokesman Ryan Burris says King got salami-free meals for two months before the county got the order thrown out in court.

"Unless you regularly do mushrooms and go to Lady Gaga concerts with your good friend Crispin Glover, then watching Maniac is guaranteed to be the weirdest experience you have ever had. (Not since The Room has a film had such a deep impact on the staff of RiffTrax, so much so that the images in Maniac temporarily dislodged from our minds the mercurial Tommy Wiseau, the stark horror of Chris-R., even the enchanting beauty of Lisa!)
Maniac starts conventionally enough, when a Vaudeville-impersonator-turned-lab-assistant-to-a-mad-scientist refuses his bosses reasonable request that he shoot himself in the heart and offer his corpse as an experimental subject. After that, it starts to get strange. A disturbed patient who thinks he is the orangutan from Poe's The Murders in the Rue Morgue is mistakenly given super-adrenaline (which evidently exists) causing him to give one of the most eccentric performances in the history of film. Meanwhile, the mad scientist's next door neighbor is disturbed because one his cats is missing from his cat ranch, where he harvests their fur after feeding their flesh to the rats (which he feeds to the next generation of cats, and so on.) After that, the offbeat aspects of Maniac really kick in.
We caution you that Maniac is not for the faint of heart. There is brief, partial, creepy, music-free, 1930's nudity (mercifully, the emphasis is on brief), plenty of cat-on-cat violence, and a scene in which our hero pops out the eyeball of his own lab cat and snacks on it. That said, it's probably tamer than any given episode of Top Chef and you would really be depriving yourself of something special if you let that keep you from this very, very unique and hilarious journey, with Mike, Bill and Kevin as your guides, into the heart of RiffTrax madness known as Maniac."
and according to wiki:
The actress named Phyllis Diller in this film is no relation to the comedienne Phyllis Diller.

I cheesed off my former in-laws when I said I hadn't seen Sling Blade. It had no idea it was their Yentl. They sat me down right then and had me watch it. And we did. And it was a big bowl of eh.
I did see that this is being offered.
I'm not sure I'm going to get this. At least, not yet. I don't have much Rifftrax stuff. (I love their shorts. I thought their Plan 9 riff was great. But I haven't done much with them besides those. I really don't like 'em riffing on newer movies...the fun of MST3K for me is not just the riffing, but hilarious riffing on really bad B-movies from the 40s to the 80s.)

Howard popularized several comedic bits. Bits which the writers of these shows continue to use as they are acknowledged listeners of the show. I just find it funny that Conan who has decided not to use his old bits and characters is reverting to Jay's style of comedy writing. They have twelve or fifteen guys on staff who have to fill ten minutes a day, you'd think they could do a better job than this. I guess Harvard 140 IQ's aren't what they used to be.

And to tie into this, I think it speaks to the dearth of comedy talent. I'm a Stern fan and a pretty diehard one at that. But that's because he's winging most of his material on a daily basis with input from only two writers in the studio and a couple guys in the back who give him info on what the staff is up to.
Compare that to sitcoms that only have to come up with 22 minutes of material a week or late night shows that have to come up with four softball monologue jokes and then maybe ten minutes of material a day with writing staffs that can reach twenty people and really have a lot of duds. Comedy has hit a nadir with people just making pop culture references and not really building anything.

The last one I saw had him read an ad he received in the mail. Ha. He was shrieking with laughter so much it took him 15 minutes to get through it. It felt like 115 minutes.
I definitely think Merchant was the man responsible for the good stuff.

It's not to say I don't think Gervais isn't funny. He's riotous on the Office and Extras. But I care nothing for The Ricky Gervais Show. It's when he's not focused and allowed to go on the tangents that he personally thinks are funny that he is revealed to be a pretty uncreative guy. He's not a stand-up guy at all: he's an actor, plain and simple.
And that's why I love Eddie Izzard soooo much. Guy can do everything.

Yeah, it's already a pretty decent response. Should be fun if we can get some follow-through.
I have never read Cerebus. I am intrigued by this idea. Problem is, I'd have to acquire the books. I think my LCS has them. They did at one point.
I shall think about this. Another problem? I have no follow-through. I'd almost certainly read one or two and then peter out. I mean, I've got a stack of individual comic issues that I'm woefully behind on. So the prospect of regular trade reading...outlook not clear. Ask again later.

I love Gervais/Merchant as a team writing something original. I watched some of The Ricky Gervais Show and I wasn't impressed. I haven't bothered to watch most of Gervais's movies (that one about ghosts, the one about lying). And I'm not crazy about his stand-up. It's not terrible, but it's not something I'd make an appointment to watch.
But I'll say this much for Gervais...he makes for a very entertaining interview. I just watched last night's Daily Show, and the back and forth between Gervais and Stewart was quite entertaining. He's capable of being quite witty in interviews, especially if it's with someone he genuinely likes (Stewart, Conan).

What I bought at the comic shop today:
Batman and Robin #18 (Cornell)
Brightest Day #16 (Johns/Tomasi/Reis)
Green Lantern #60 (Johns/Mahnke)
Green Lantern: Emerald Warriors #5 (Tomasi)
Time Masters: Vanishing Point #5 (Batman's back already, so your guess is as good as mine?)
Unwritten #20 (Carey/Gross)
Strange Tales 2 #3 (Various, but there's a Woodgod story by Haspiel in here that's worth the price of admission, plus Pekar, Terry Moore, other trippy stuff)

It's one of my two monthlies, and I can't recommend it enough -- no matter what they're leading to, the build-up has been perfect, and the idea that someone's going to die is in the background. I really felt the same way you did, but Hickman's steering the ship into clear water.

The internet has ruined comic books and also elevated them.
In college and in high school, I never knew about comic message boards. I didn't browse Jinxworld. I didn't do anything but read the occasional Wizard issue which I enjoyed without bias. I ranted and raved to my friends about Morrison's X-Men, JMS's Spider-man, Bendis's Daredevil, Whedon's X-Men, JMS's Rising Stars, Winnick's Exiles. I had fond memories of good runs of my favorite characters. I even knew that Claremont and Austen's newest Uncanny runs weren't to my favor and I sold those comics (I'm looking at you Draco!!! ) I truly remember those runs to be blemish free, fantastic, and enjoyable.
Then I discovered Jinxworld during my first great unemployment. I went out and bought some Hulk, X-Men, Annihilation, and other stuff before I had really gotten into the culture of Fanboyism. I remember being influenced a lot by peoples opinions on what was good and what wasn't. Some of my favorite runs now stood out with obvious flaws in them. hell, I wound up hating Milligan's X-men far worse than I did when I first read it.
But I also got turned on to a lot of stuff. I would have never picked up Morrison's Batman, Aaron's Ghost Rider, Scalped, Gotham Central, Robinson's Starman, or even Sandman had it not been for this board and their recommendations.
So I take the good with the bad, and ignore the hype.
In Conclusion, Superman sucks.

Yeah, I got that trade a while back, so I bet the second one is out. I should pick that up. I really liked the first.
I recently picked up Stray Bullets volumes 1 and 2, as well as Young Liars Volume 1. How many Stray Bullets trades are there? Also picked up all but one of the Savage Dragon issues I've missed since my comic shop closed. I think that might be the only floppy I'm going to pick up for a while. I may try to hunt some back issues down and jump on Hickman's FF again, as well as Johns's Flash. I was loving Morrison's Batman stuff, but I don't especially miss it. I kind of want to read a good sci-fi series. Oh, also I'm on volume 3 or 4 of 20th Century Boys and loving that. It's better than Pluto, even.

Gah, I looked it up, and even though the spines make them look like part of the same series of collections, my two Stray Bullets volumes are different, so my "Volume 1" collects 1-4 and my "Volume 2" collects 8-14. So I guess I need to find the other Volume 2 to get 5-8, and then Volume 4 has 13-16. The overlap will bug me. Though strangely the big Volume 2 was cheaper than the slim Volume 1.

FF is a lot like Superman as a franchise: There's so much to play with, and so many categories of threats and pathos, that you don't need to alter the fundamentals of each property. It's a playground.
Unfortunately, that thinking encourages people to redo the same stories, especially in FF. Reed has threatened the cohesion of his family with neglect and obsession so many times that his marriage is the only Marvel one that could logically end in divorce. I'm tired of that story and its eventual ending: Reed dotes on his family and calls them the greatest adventure/experiment. He's an addict, and his fix is science. We get it.

Yesterday I was working with some of our IT Cow-Orkers down in their offices. I noted a dry eraseboard up on the wall that had many of their names listed with cartoon character names next to them. No clue why...but what the fuck.

Fast Forward to today.
I've now received several e-mails from other Cow-Orkers asking me why I compared so-and-so to El Kabong.
