I know Bendis is a fan of Mamet's work and this seems to be a precursor to hsi work on The Unit.

U.S. secret agent Bobby Scott is assigned to rescue a high-ranking government official's daughter, who's been kidnapped by sex traffickers in this twisty political thriller written and directed by famed playwright David Mamet. As Scott delves deeper into the girl's disappearance, he discovers a larger, more insidious plot and coverup -- and it's up to him to get to the bottom of it.

The film stars Val Kilmer, Derek Luke, William H. Macy, Ed O'Neill, Kristen Bell

Rotten Tomatoes has this movie at 64%.

I loved this movie. At the time of it's release I actually heard about it through this board. Sadly it would be the last time we would see a great performance by Val Kilmer. Great dialogue, great story. It even has The married with children guy (not david faustino)

It's pretty brutal in what they allow these guys to do to accomplish their objective.

Yeah I took it as they were a super covert black ops section of the military. Favorite line," Tell him it's the only man who ever heard him call on Jesus."

It's worth watching. It starts out strong, but I felt like the third act wasn't that great.

Spartan (as well as the Unit) flow directly out of Inside Delta Force by Eric L. Haney.

And they're pretty much the baddest dudes on the planet.

It's my favorite Mamet movie. I find it more focused than some of his other work and I love that he takes the story in logical but unpredictable directions. One of the few movies to surprise me.

I really liked that Val Kilmer's character said, "I ain't a planner, I ain't a thinker. I never wanted to be. You got to set your motherfucker to receive."

I actually just saw this on a "Movies you probably haven't seen" list...

Might have to remedy that.

Ed O'neil is a great actor when given a great script.

He really is.

I think he's perfect on Modern Family...his wife on that show is MORE PERFECT though.

Is 'The Unit' worth watching?

I tried a few episodes years ago and thought the mission part of the story was interesting but I didn't care for the military housewives part.

I didn't care about the show when it aired on CBS, but I did catch a huge chunk of episodes in syndication and it was okay. Not great, but a good way to kill an hour or two.

I'd give that to "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" a year later (at least, I think I have my timelines right).
