This big Dorling Kindersley 'coffee table' book is a cut above a lot of others. It features a Ryan Sook cover (plus a couple of color art boards from him as well, tucked neatly away on the inside cover) and a sturdy slipcover.
It's arranged year by year and covers 1935 through 2010. It's more captivating than you might imagine browsing through DC's year-by-year output. Lots of art, tons of articles, not just about books but creators, editorial directions, and early 'events' (read about Aquaman's wedding or Braniac's Bottle City). The format allows for short articles, not just about the heavy hitters, but about characters such as the Challengers of the Unknown, Warlord, Space Ranger, Firestorm, Congo Bill, Deadman, Swamp Thing, Doom Patrol, Zatanna, and lots more.
Damn this would make a cool gift for the holidays-- and Amazon has a great price at 42% off:

Yep, it's on my list, and knowing Nick, he's already got it for me :)

I got a review copy of this through my work at GeekDad on Wired.com
LOVED IT.
It's a beautiful book. And the youngest minion and I sat down to read it together because I could show him all the obscure characters that showed up on Brave & the Bold.
And those two-page reproductions of famous scenes from comics are amazing. Worth the price for those alone.

I was interested in it, but I couldn't lift it. :surrend:
Oh wait. I meant a different book:
- 75 Years Of DC Comics: The Art Of Modern Mythmaking (http://www.taschen.com/pages/en/catalogue/popculture/all/06749/facts.75_years_of_dc_comics_the_art_of_modern_myth making.htm) edited by Paul Levitz.
It weighs 16 pounds.

Wow. That's hardcore.
I'd love to browse through it, too.

It comes in a slipcase with a handle, but then you'll need a standup desk to read it. You can leave through the first 100 pages at the publisher's site.

The Sook cover? You don't like that?

Thanks.
Early on, one of the pages features an Irv Novick Batman cover (205#) with Batman and Robin reflected in the blind man's glasses. God, I love Novick's covers.

I love Ryan Sook, but to me that looks like a busy mess. If you're going to create what is essentially a coffee table book, it's okay to be a little understated, or maybe more design-oriented.

Heavy books be heavy.
