Brett drove the two of them to a clearing in the woods, the moonlight made everything seem surreal and dreamlike “Wow.” Shelby uttered before she could stop herself, it was such a cliched thing to say, and she wanted to impress Brett, show she was a better class of woman than you’d normally find around here. Brett got out of the car first, so that he could open the door for her, and she let out a small giggle but stifled it quickly enough, “Come on, there’s this great spot near the creek that is just amazing at night,” he held out his hand for her, “You take lots of innocent young girls out here at midnight, Brett?” “Oh, yes, LOTS.” And he gave her another of his quirky smiles, she smiled back uncertainly, “Alright, let’s just go, this place is pretty but it gives me the creeps.”

Aside from the faint rush of water from the creek nearby, and the sound of the nocturnal insects stirring from afar, the clearing was virtually silent. Shelby could hear every footstep that they both took, 'Heh,' she thought to herself 'no one can ever say I never did anything daring.' “We’re here.” Shelby looked around, “Um, where’s this great spot by the creek?” “Oh, like I said, we’re here.” “Well, maybe I’m crazy, but shouldn’t there be … you know, water?” “Oh, there was,” he began to smile, “but you see, the creek’s sort of receded over the years, darn human footprint and all.” “Okay, then why have you led me out into the middle of now-” she didn’t need to finish her sentence, “Oh shit.” She turned to run, but he grabbed her arm, “Where are you going? You're the one who came on to me, you must have seen this coming, I mean, NO ONE is THIS charming naturally,” he smiled wider, wider than Shelby thought was humanly possible. “What the hell is wrong with you?!” “Why Shelby, I thought you had figured that out already, after all, doesn’t my smile remind you of your older brother on Thanksgiving day?”

Shelby’s eyes widened as he said this, a thousand thoughts began to race through her mind, he’d read her mind, how had he read her mind, what the hell had she gotten herself into, how could she get away, but one thing was most present in her brain . . . Brett smiled even wider, too wide, the skin on both sides of his mouth began to rip, he buckled over as he grasped at the skin on his face with his hands, the skin began to slip off of his frame, revealing a creature that only bore a passing resemblance to a person, it’s body was gaunt and completely hairless, it’s limbs were too long, it had massive claws on both hands and feet, but it’s face was what was the most horrific, it’s head was misshapen, it’s ears were nonexistent, as was it’s nose, it’s eyes were slightly to big for it’s head and it’s mouth, it’s mouth look almost … human, aside from its teeth being sharper, the mouth was all too familiar. ‘Oh god, I kissed that thing,’ she knew it was a stupid thing to think before she died, but she couldn’t help it, the everything about the creature was wrong, just wrong. It simply just shouldn’t exist. “Wha…what the hell are you,” she wanted to know, she HAD to know, just like she HAD to get out of here. “Mostly,” it growled “just very, VERY hungry.”

She backed away from the …thing, trying to will her legs to work again so she could at least try to run, but they just wouldn’t; she could feel the scream brewing in her throat, so she let it fly.

“Wait for it.”

“Oh yes, please scream, it takes the fun out of it if you don’t!” the creature laughed. Shelby was still terrified, but seeing this thing make a mockery of her last moments, it just, well it just pissed her off. If only she’d have brought the Bowie knife that Daddy had given her for her 16th birthday, “This will keep those boys away from my little girl,” they’d all had a big laugh about it at the time, but she’d said she was old enough to take care of herself, but standing here, frightened and angry, she felt younger than she’d felt in years. “Just do this already,” she spit the words out, fighting her fear, “just kill me or fuck me or eat me and just get this shit on the road.”

(You go girl!)

“Quiet.”

“Such a filthy mouth for such a pretty girl, pretty girls used to know there place around these parts!” the creature growled. ‘Good, now he’s pissed too, only fair, hooray for moral victories.’ “I’m going to show you your place,” it pointed to its mouth and leapt. Shelby closed her eyes and began to scream.

“Okay, now, Cain.”

BANG. SPLAT.

Shelby continued to scream, eyes still shut, awaiting the blow, completely oblivious to the fact she was still screaming.

“You can stop now.”

She continued to scream.

[Good god, can’t we just shoot her too?]

She stopped, she saw the headless shape of the creature sprawled on the ground before her. She looked around wildly.

“Yeah, I’m over here.”

She turned to the voice, and at first her eyes couldn’t really register what she saw, with the bright full moon glowing behind him, he looked just as inhuman as the creature he’d just killed, pistols drawn in both hands, he looked just like a cross between the Angel of Death and Walker, Texas Ranger. “Who…what…?”

[Where? Why? How? I can ask questions too lady.]

He began to walk towards her, she backed away.

“I’m not going to hurt you.”

“I’m sure you won’t, but no offense, given what just happened, I’d feel much better if you put the guns away first.”

([Boo, no fair.])

JR placed his guns back in both of his shoulder holsters. He checked out the creature’s corpse. “Yep, he’s dead.”

[Duh. You expect less from me?]

“Oh gross, I’m covered in … oh god, please just be blood.”

“Just now noticing that?”

“I’m glad you saved my life, but mockery is not included in the Damsel Gratitude package.”

[(Ha!)]

“You seem to be taking the fact that a monster just tried to eat you pretty well”

“Yeah… weird, must be the shock.”

“So, you’re okay? He didn’t spit on you or anything?”

“No,” she thought for a second, “wait, why??!”

“Goblins have the nastiest mouths, their saliva is toxic.”

“Goblin? That thing is a goblin?”

“Well, it’s a type of goblin anyway, and judging from the size, this fella’s gonna fetch me a pretty penny.”

“Ummm, who the hell are you.”

“Oh sorry, I damn near forgot,” he held out his hand to her, “Hi, my name is JR Freeman, and I’m a Hunter.”

My cousin gave me a few of his comics around that age...but only a handful. My mom would drive me to the library to take out books to read. I didn't get back into comics until the tail end of Marvel's Star Wars series...and GI Joe.

And then a few years later while out with my dad at the local sub shop - I discovered a comic book store right next door. It was just amazing to me. So I picked up a Batman title and then the hobby just bloomed from there. thankfully I had a newspaper route and mowed lawns, so I had the money to ride to the comic book store and buy comics. Of course, comics were 75 cents to $1 those days...so it was easier for me to afford the hobby.

I'm always happy with my purchases.

Everything I buy and read is because I like. The ones I end up giving away is mostly because I don't have room for them all.

Other times, I give them away because I plan on buying them in a nicer format. Others, because I think that particular person could really like that particular comic.

Everything I buy and read is because I like. The ones I end up giving away is mostly because I don't have room for them all.

When Owen woke up this morning he laughed at me. He said I look funny. Then he said I looked like a completely different person. A person named John.

I really don't care about characters like Oracle, Batgirl, Ras, Red Robin, and Catwoman. If they were written by guys like Snyder or Dini I'd read them all, but alas they are not.

If it's a new artist just throw a sample by Aaron and myself. I'm a bit tougher on the artists because someone flipping through the book is going to notice the art more than the writing. If the art looks like something out of that Kid Intense book I'd rather skip.

But it also depends on the story. There are some stories where a more simple style, unpolishing would fit much better than others. It's what I tried to keep in mind when pairing people up originally.

But if you are bringing someone in, by all means the liklihood is that team will be set. I just want to see what's going on ahead of time.

Honestly, don't be afraid to ask if you're serious. I've talked to a lot of pros about participating. Not to have the entire book filled with pros because that would defeat the purpose and take away someone's spot in the book, but to do a two page story either writing or drawing. Some have said they simply don't have the time to help. Some have said they'd do it in a heartbeat but their current contracts won't allow it. Some are already in place.

Never hurts to ask.

There is plenty of time. Focus right now is that Aaron and I are putting issue 2 to bed so we can get it out in November. Then there is a nice gap before the big 64 page Heroes issues and most of the creative teams already have artists who are working on it which puts us well ahead of schedule.

One per issue, max. The extra attention they bring is great for everyone involved but the main focus is giving people a launchpad who need it.

I was actually going to submit to them this week just to see if the second time is the charm.

At first I didn't think it'd be cool to go to that well again but then I noticed a lot of other folks have found success in their second and third attempts. So I'll likely set a lower monetary goal and now that I have a book complete and art from two more issues I can do a little more with the page

Was the Books of Magic series by John Ney Rieber not too popular?

I've been re-reading the series and love it. It has some nice ties with the Sandman series, appearances by Zatanna and John Constantine. I just don't remember there being any nice collections for this series. And every letter column so far has the same 2-3 people writing in. :lol:
