Oh we dooooo

AndrewG

Again, you're wrong. It's plenty fun.

It's boring as shit with stories that could have been done in a single issue being stretched throughout a year in which the title character appears in costume 6% of the time while we get excitement like the building of a race car over 6 issues and then 2 where the fucking car just sits on the tracks but the main character can show how smart and clever he is with witty dialogue. Boring, crappy comic that pretty much sums up everything that is wrong with mainstream comics.

I slept in...for the first time in probably months and the kids had torn into all the comics and were rereading the last 5 Batman and Robin issues. That was awesome to see. Mainly because I love that they'll wake up early and look for something to read as opposed to playing a video game or watching TV but also because of how much they enjoy that particular comic

:nonono2:

they should have been ready to go to church and waking you up so you all could go as a family.

There's a church directly across the street from us. They go when they want. I grew up being forced out of my bed to go every Sunday and enduring 4 hour long Masses on Easter and Christmas and other major celebration days. I'm not putting them through that.

Interesting article I stumbled across detailing Cary Bates' original plans for Superman V...

http://www.newsarama.com/film/cary-bates-superman-5-100628.html

"The intent was to leapfrog over Superman III and especially IV, and return the series to the high mark achieved in 1 and 2," Bates told Newsarama. "[It was] our desire to do a fully developed, balls-out science fiction story pitting Superman and Brainiac against each other mano a mano."

Brainiac] comes to Earth for the first time and shrinks Metropolis, adding it to his interplanetary collection of miniaturized cities," Bates explained. "But because he becomes aware of the unique super-powered being in his latest acquisition, Brainiac miniaturizes himself and ventures into the bottled Metropolis in person. This leads to a knock-down drag-out battle that ends in what appears to be Superman’s death."

The idea for this movie death pre-dated the later, greatly publicized death of Superman in comics, and similarly had a plan for the character's rebirth — although this time it was through a visit to a certain well-known bottled city.

"A split-second before his atoms would’ve been permanently disintegrated, they are sucked into a bottle-city a few rows over... Kandor," he said. "There he is 'reborn' as a mortal man, where he gets to reconnect with his Kryptonian roots as he begins the arduous process of rehabilitating himself and eventually escaping from Kandor to resume his battle with Brainiac."

The Brainiac in Superman V would have been a combination of what were, at the time, the most seminal versions of the character: the green-skinned human from the '50s and '60s, and the robot version introduced by Marv Wolfman and Gil Kane in the '80s.

"While this two-tier approach to Brainiac proved to be an extremely important component to the plot, the original reason was much more pragmatic," Bates explained. "Our Brainiac had to be human much of time, or the producers would’ve faced the dilemma of throwing away big bucks to hire a big-name actor who would be reduced to an unseen voice-over artist for a mechanical or CGI robot."

I wasn't forced, I actually caught the bus and got rides to the ones relatives attended during my early years because of my own curiosity and belief. Eventually the mindless indoctrination and smugness rubbed me the wrong way, though, and I decided I'd rather stay home and no longer associate with these people again.

My extended family were Southern Baptists, though, so maybe my experience is with crazier Christians than normal. It's my understanding that there are only "Southern" Baptists to begin with because of a split over the abolitionist movement. :p

Was looking around the net at what some others had to say about the Morrison Batman run thus far. Funny stuff.

A lot of people choose different high points from Damian's redemption to Bruce taking out Darkseid and Zur en Arh but for low points it's mainly stuff like, 'they make all other books look bad', or Phil Tan

I just read the Phil Tan arc again. It's actually much better the second time.

I think I just went in last time with too many expectations, from art to storytelling. It's a solid read, though, and I love the introduction of certain characters. Knowing how they'll relate to the rest of the series...

Still need to go buy issue 16. :D

I didn't hate the writing. I know a lot of people consider it the weak link in the run because of Jason being involved and the Flamingo but I didn't mind them as much. Probably the least enjoyable of the arcs (so I can only give it a 9 or something) but for me it was the art that bugged me the most

I'm not Ray or Kiai, but I currently have about 75 long-box drawers, which hold about 200 comics after bagging and boarding, in a climate-controlled storage unit and three long boxes with the last few months worth of comics here at home. I wish I was disciplined enough to take care of them on a weekly basis, but it ends up being about three or four months (approximately 150-175 comics per month) before I move those I buy to storage. In the meantime, those boxes just go in my closet. Like you, most of these I'd probably never re-read, and although I got rid of about 3,000 books a few years ago, it continues to grow and becomes more and more of a pain after each move.

Stray Observations: Meeting a sleeping homeless guy at night

So I was walking around downtown the other day minding my own business when a bumb started asking me for money. I said no, and he started laying a guilt trip on me, so I let him know I was still trying to get someone to give me their tickets to SDCC next year. It didn't work and keeps telling me how lousy I am. Later that night I was walking through the park and saw him sleeping. I wondered if I should just start kicking him for making me feel bad.

Would you have thought he deserved to be kicked for making you feel bad?

Boardwalk Empire is the best new show this year. Sorry Walking Dead, but it's true.

Walking Dead is really good, but Empire is magnificent. 3 incredible episodes in a row.

East Bound & Down is ofcourse the best show on television. I'm sad that season 2 is now over, but it ended on a high note.

Dead is a very cool premise, but it falters in the acting department. I haven't seen any acting on that show that has blown me away.

On Empire nearly the entire cast has been exceptional, with Buscemi and Macdonald leading the way. They have amazing chemistry together, even when there only scene together is talking on the phone.

Morgan was okay, but his entire role was to be exposition guy. Fill in Rick on what's happened while he was in the coma. I highly doubt we'll be seeing him again (if the show follows the comics).

Dwayne I have no comment on because if I say what I want I'll come across as an uncaring ass. :)

No, I stopped reading while they were still holed up in the jail. I got kind of tired of the story after a while. I got the point that the humans were the bigger monsters than the zombies. I didn't need to have that reiterated to me every arc. "Oh look, a place where we can be safe for a while. Oh no! A bad person is doing horrible things to other living people."

Doug, got a hold of Batman and Robin 16 this weekend, I noticed. Enjoy it?

I enjoyed it a great deal, but I'm not a fan of Batman being franchised.

I don't think that Batman is a character who lends himself to being a Legacy character. Yes, it is cool to see Dick take up the cowel, and he did a good job as Batman, but Bruce Wayne is Batman. I liked that Dick's immedate thought was, "Hey, if you need Nightwing to suite up and help out..."

Grant's entire run on Batman, from the intro of Damian, to RIP and it's epilogues only went to prove that Bruce Wayne is the best and only person to be Batman. No one can ever be as prepared for anything as he is. His entire inner monologue in the last issue of RIP only cemented that for me.

I think that by the end of Grant's run on Batman Inc. it will come out that no one can measure up to Bruce and to try is futile. Dick will go back to being Nightwing, and Bruce will be the only Batman. It would strike me as odd if it ended any other way.

I really think that is what Grant is going for. To show that only Bruce can truley be Batman, and what better way to do that than bring in other people and show how they just don't measure up to Bruce.

While Cam Stewart knocked it out of the park on the 99 Fiends fight scene (so fluid and intense), Irving stole the show with the paniced look on Damian's face when he asks what will happen to Batman and Robin now that Father is back.

I can understand the Walking Dead opinion. I know full well I'm in the minority. I never said it was bad, just that the book wasn't really for me. The TV show is very entertaining. It's like a 6 hour long zombie film, and there is nothing wrong with that.

What is it this time? The Batman thing, or the Walking Dead thing?

You actually made well reasoned statements on both books, I just happen to disagree with both of those sentiments. :)

Walking Dead: Soo much more than the "humans are monsters" statement. The book fires on about every emotional level.

B and R: I can see the argument, because DC will never LET Bat's be legacy character. It's not that the character isn't built for it, though. I feel batman should be more of a legacy than any other. He basically created the sidekick. Why if he's going not to pass on the mantle? He's one of the best teachers in the DCU. He also is very human. Unlike every other superhero, he should grow old and die relatively normally.

Unlike every other superhero, he should grow old and die relatively normally.

I can't speak to Walking Dead since I haven't read the book in a long time. I have been thinking about giving it another shot though and picking up some trades.

As for Batman, I understand what you are saying about Batman creating the sidekick, but Dick has gone on to create his own identity in Nightwing. Tim has gone on to become Red Robin. Neither seem to really want to be Batman. They are successful on their own. Dick really only became Batman to keep Jason from ruining Bruce's legacy. Once Bruce was back his first thought was to switch costumes back to Nightwing again.

I also really think that Morrison set up Bruce to be the worlds only Batman in his run on Batman (not Batman & Robin because Bruce wasn't really in that title). All of the death traps in Batman that seemed hopeless, Bruce was two steps ahead of everyone. Morrison showed how Bruce was undefeatable.

I saw Megamind and Due Date today.

Megamind was funny in points, but easily the weakest of this year's major animated movies. Still, some fun plays on superhero conventions.

I like it, but I went with my daughter too :D

There's some fun superhero conventions, I agree.

The idea of two Supermen fighting tossing buildings at one another was fun.. superhero stalkers.. bad guys winning finding their lives empty, etc.

Anyways, compared to TS3, everything's going to feel subpar :D

The creator owned renaissance is very much alive and well. See Scarlet, Walking Dead, Morning Glories, Sweet Tooth, ect. All very well received and popular.

Speaking of which..

I had no interest in Firebreather when it was a comic.. now that I saw a trailer for it in front of Megamind, I'm interested now :D

I mean, I like the creators, so I dunno why I passed. I think I was too cynical about Image's superhero fare being pushed at the time.

Uncanny X-Force at #1. That's a huge surprise.

That's Deadpool for ya.

Kick-Ass 2 #1 in the top ten is a MASSIVE surprise.

The power of the $2.99 price point and movie hype :D

Superior at #38 is good, but kind of weak compared to Kick-Ass.

Good point. Then again, the ad campaign didn't really reveal much. Probably retailers thinking a foul mouthed Superman wouldn't sell. Even though that's not what the book is about.

Ouch, looking like making Chaos War a full-fledged event will not pay off for Marvel. #57 and #69 for the launch issues.

If it doesn't have Bendis or his friends name on it, it's by and large ignored by fan populace. And by that, I interpret it as if they don't reference it, it doesn't matter. Which is disappointing and something I hope changes soon.

My #1 Morrison Batman moment: the Ninja ManBat fight in the Pop Art Museum. The art in the background being used as a sound effect for Batman shooting his grappling gun. Brilliant combination of story and art.

He was fantastic on King of Queens, Mall Cop sucked but he was very charming and funny, he was great in Grown Ups and pretty much the best part of Chuck and Larry

I hated Grown ups SOOOOO much...
