And really, there isn't a problem with too much words, dumdums just don't want to read a lot and that's the only problem with it. If they're good words and are well written it's fine. And I'm not talking about overly densed passages, I'm talking about the normal rate of words that reduces as the years go on.

I wonder what these people thought of he recent issue of House Of Mystery and it's brilliant 3 pages of prose to tell that issue's monthly side story.

I didn't quite gather the logic of the time travel business Bendis was trying to put together. That and I didn't get why Immortus betrayed them at the end. Was Immortus trying to figure out why he was killed by the New Avengers or was he trying to stop his younger self from breaking the timestream or both?

His cliffhangers were phenomenal. Although I don't know, Bendis in early-era USM was up there too.
Even how he paced the page is important to note. All the beats in the page tell you something or do something and they'll nicely packed.

Plus BKV wrote several episodes of LOST and any body who ever watched that can say for a fact the cliffhangers there were great.... most of the time
Yeah, but that's not all him. There were a ton of Buffy people on that show that learned from the master of the commercial break cliffhanger.

I wonder what these people thought of he recent issue of House Of Mystery and it's brilliant 3 pages of prose to tell that issue's monthly side story.

and people complaining about the Batman issue with Joker that's all prose. But then again they can complain about how it actually written, which is something to consider because that's hard to do. You can't be too hard or too heavy with words because there is a wider audience to it. A kid could read it, but also an adult can read it so you can't go all James Joyce or really literary with it and it takes on this movie adaptation novelization quality.

I think it was that
Immortus wanted to see how he would be defeated if ever he was to be ultimately defeated. He therefore tricked everyone into showing him that.
I don't really know how to explain it

Astonishing X Men when Collosus comes back but not the moment everyone talks about. I cried when Kitty said " I even spread your ashes over Russia" and then Peter goes "You did" and then pauses and then in the next panel says "Thank you". And the thing is everytime I think about it, I start tearing up and I'm tearing up right now.

Well ultimately the Son of Hulk thing wasn't really part of Realm of Kings. It was more or less a branding thing. But ok.

Anyhow that makes sense I guess. But it felt like too much flash but not enough substance. It wasn't as bad as the time travel in Cap Reborn though but at least Bendis put his best foot forward.

Yes, because if everyone took the time to go over what's happened since a villain's last ambiguous end, that wouldn't being boring.

And you know, Kang is a time traveler. Things are most likely not happening in the same order for him, so attempting to explain anything would just be tedious and stupid.

It doesn't require exposition, just a tiny little nod. Otherwise it feels random wondering where the hell Kang went. It wouldn't be tedious or stupid for a little nod to have been made.

Also we've had over 20 years of grim and gritty Batman. I'm not quite interested in reading Finch's Batman book if it's just gonna be the goddamned Batman.

He travels through time. Every appearance could be a random point in his personal timeline.

And that last appearance happened far out in space, involving characters with zero interaction with the Avengers. How does it matter at all to Bendis' story?

I'm sorry if you feel continuity is being ignored, but you're playing into an anal retentive attention to it that has rendered comics inaccessible to all but the very few. Just let comics be fun for once.

Since there's a lot of aspiring writers here thought I'd share this. I got a chance to meet Pen Densham (wrote Robin Hood Prince of Thieves and directed The Kiss). He is one of the nicest guys ever and super smart. Got some of the best writing advice I've ever received. There's a book he wrote that's coming out about screenwriting called Riding the Alligator. It's really great, he's not really promoting the book so I don't know if you guys will hear about it.

Fantastic Four went from bah to ok to aw to bah to alright.
Part of the problem in the story was the actual stuff Ben did. I mean, yes he is a freak, but shouldn't the public, being that he is a superhero and a public superhero who saved everyone's life a billion times, should they really care at that point? I mean the thing about the Thing is while he is this monster, what misunderstanding or prejudice really happens with him? He's not this Frankenstein monster anymore, and while it is mostly internal angst, I don't think the external, the stuff people think about him, doesn't work anymore. I feel that the Thing would be able to see a ball game and have dinner with Stan Lee and play Poker regardless of what he looked like.

Did like the Yancy Street gang. That's an actual clever story idea.

But there is something about the Alicia stuff that comes off sour for me. There is a shallowness in the story that comes off as weird.

It's not perfect and far from amazing, but it is progress. What Hickman really needs to do now is do more that instead of the cold cool shallow ideas that only work in that moment. This issue could've been just that and been great, but what hinders it is the plot stuff that doesn't need to really be there. All that Namor stuff could've next issue. Same with the Galactus stuff because that cliffhanger wouldn't get address right away and that's a cliffhanger that kind of has to.

There should've been more to the actual cure than what was there and more thought and debate with it. Does Ben still want this? Does it matter what he looks like? All the stuff in the issue would've been fine if it 1967, but the character has grown a lot and that should be addressed and commented on.

This issue could've been just that and been great, but what hinders it is the plot stuff that doesn't need to really be there. All that Namor stuff could've next issue. Same with the Galactus stuff because that cliffhanger wouldn't get address right away and that's a cliffhanger that kind of has to.

7/10

It was my favorite book of the week but I sort of agree with all the points you made. Ben has been comfortable hanging around and doing all that stuff as the Thing but maybe doing it as a human gave it a long missed perspective from him. And yeah the Alicia thing was kind of shallow but I never took her to be this great character anyway.

I didn't mind the things that bugged you but I can completely see why you didn't care for em. Good review

But we're not really given that human perspective. We're given this simple snapshot of it because the issue is full of other not important at the moment stuff that it doesn't allow Hickman to flesh that out. The Sue stuff was waste of pages. The last bit didn't need to be there.

And Alicia loved this man regardless of what he looked like and there is a failed opportunity in the story to address that aspect. She loves Ben because of who he is, not because of what he looks like and the story fails because of that.

I was under the impression they were going to start off independent, but gradually start to mesh together. Didn't JMS say that he was planning on having Wonder Woman appear in the second or third Superman OGN, and Johns said he'd reference the events of Superman in a later Batman trade?

I got the feeling they were going to be doing their damnedest to have these match up, unlike the All Star line.

I dunno. I kind of thing writers trying to match up stories to each other becomes a problem and leads to things (eventually) like Dark Reign. I would rather they just come out and tell a good Superman story or Batman story and it doesn't matter if Vol 2 reflects on V1 or whatever.

I get what you mean, but I don't think it's going to be a case of what happens in one book affects the other. They're just not going to contradict each other. It'll just mean that if JMS thinks of a good reason to use Batman in a story, it'll match up looks and attitude wise with Johns' OGN's, and if Johns decides to have Superman, the same will happen in return.

As opposed to All Star Superman and God Damn Batman, where Superman appeared in GDB and was very much obviously a completely different character to the one in All Star Supes.

I seem to remember the original comics in the Ultimate line having a pretty decent middle ground (hell, the only time the characters really interacted with ones from another book at first was in Ultimate Marvel Team Up), so I'm hopeful that'll be the case here. This seems much more in line with being DC's answer to the Ultimate line than All Star was.

at the con today I saw a few things that are I found, well interesting.

I was volunteering so I got there at 8 and the con opened at 1 so my volunteer ours for the con were over by the time the con started. So around 10 or 11 the Aspen guys came in. They still needed to set up their booth and everything. So who did they have setting the booth up? No not the volunteers or general workers. JT Krul, other writers and artists, and the head guy. I just found that odd. 4 volunteers and myself were walking by and we saw they were setting up so we asked if they needed help, they said no. I can understand them not needing help but am I the only one that finds it a little odd that a big company like Aspen doesn't have a group of guys who set up their booth?

I was talking to the colorist for Blackest Night. I had to ask him how he was still alive after doing that book. He chuckled. I asked if he was working on anything right now, and he slipped he was working on something and then I told him they hadn't solicited it yet. He said not to tell anyone. yeah your jealous.

It doesn't explain but it does explain in some places but it's all drawn out just right that it's not explaining too much.

This is Marvel.

The Human Torch got beaten into a coma for being a superhero. Spider-man is still a wanted fugitive.

I find it entirely possible that these stupid, stupid fucks would still think The Thing is some sort of disgusting freak.

Ray G.
10-29-2010, 07:29 PM
There should've been more to the actual cure than what was there and more thought and debate with it. Does Ben still want this? Does it matter what he looks like? All the stuff in the issue would've been fine if it 1967, but the character has grown a lot and that should be addressed and commented on.

Sasha. He's a fucking rock monster. His cock is made of granite.

That's not something you "get okay with". Sure, you can deal with it and live as normal a life as possible, use it to do good things. But that doesn't mean you wouldn't want it to go away if you could.

A permanent cure? I could see that being a bit more tricky, since it would mean the end of his time as a superhero. But I don't see him having any questions about this.

I kind of think Ben just started tuning out the idiots after a while. It's not that they stopped staring at him, it's that he stopped caring. But I do think it makes sense that he would want to be "normal" again for a short time.

I do think it was a good, fair review from Sasha, even if I disagree with most of his points.

Well Little Dawn walks on,
and she thinks she don't belong under the starry heights
So take a sigh as long as the war's been going on in your heart tonight
And if you want to make that light, go on and swim across the ocean
And if you want to make it right, go on and put your plan in motion
The gap is only as wide as the hollow of the sky between you, my dear
And the truth, absolute,
adding naught more profound to it than that you are here
And if you want to keep it bright, well you might have to burn a candle
And if you want to keep it tight, well you might have to learn to handle
But on the days and nights its hard to breathe
and you can't believe you still walk the streets
Stretch out your weary hand to me - it's alright
And if you're not content to just believe
And if you don't consent to just let it be
Stretch out your legs and dance with me all night, tonight
It's alright
It's alright
It's alright
It's alright
It's alright
It's alright

What an interesting last few days I've had, went to the doctor's office yesterday, the people there were 10,000 times more helpful than the ones at the hospital (and charged 10 times less) got a buttload of tests that need to be performed so I have to go on Monday (my birthday) to get poked, prodded and bled. Yay. Spent 8 hours of a 10 trip waiting for the busses, this city has an awful pblic transit system, in fact, when I move, one of the prerequisites for my new city is that it must have a good PT system. Just got a bill in the mail for ANOTHER 500 dollars from the hospital, bringing the total up to 1400 dollars for what amounted to 30 seconds of work on their part, and they didn't even fix me. (Fuckers.)

Plus, now all my family members are in a hissy because of the fight I had with my sister, which she then blabbed to every goddamn person, which, ultimately proved the point I was trying to make to her in the first place. Of course, I could care less what they think. I see them a grand total of once every 3 years.

So, anyway, an interesting few days. On the bright side, I think I'm getting a new DSi soon. Also, I hear Gail is doing the Gathering.

wow

I'm curious about this. I gave up on the first miniseries after 2 issues because it felt like it was super padded. Is this still the first mini or are we into subsequent ones yet? I think there's going to be like three series total, representing the arc of a movie or something.

It's alot of fun, and actually precedes Buffy, the vampire Slayer.

The Dabel Bros./Marvel collabo brought forth a GN-version of the first novel:

You get to write a year's worth of Avengers stories. Any team you want with any roster you want.

What's your book's name??

Who's your team??

Artist?? Artists??

How many arcs??

I sure did. I had no intentions of even looking for it. I had a few issues of the run in my backpack to get signed, then I saw it for sale for $10 at one of the tables. I could not pass that up. He signed it, I was telling him I found it for 10 bucks and he's like, "seriously, man I would have bought that for that price". He even checked to see if it was the printing that had some kind of defect. It wasn't.

Is this the con in Long Beach? Did you meet Mark Waid?

Yeah I did. I met him at his first signing, he signed my Fantastic Four HC, some FF singles, and some Irredeemable singles I bought. Then I went to his 50 questions in 50 minutes panel and I asked a question so I got Irredeemable vol 4 for asking a question. So I went back to the next signing and got him to sign it and no one was behind me so I talked to him and told him how much his Fantastic Four run has ment to me. Pretty awesome guy.

yeah I highly recommend his fantastic four run. It is great. I was talking to him today and he said that him and Mike Weringo were best friends and working on that book together were some of the greatest times he had. It really shows in the stories as well they were all great.
I'm going to read the Batman before I give it to him. I've been meaning to read The Long Halloween for a while. I will give him Hush though, that was such a great arc.

Hope he's doing the second Spider-man book, that would make me happy
