My picks for actresses:

Mary Jane = Emma Roberts (Hotel For Dogs)

http://images1.fanpop.com/images/image_uploads/Emma-Roberts-emma-roberts-963536_1024_768.jpg

Gwen Stacy = Annasophia Robb (Bridge To Terabithia)

http://images.starpulse.com/pictures/2007/06/09/previews/AnnaSophia%20Robb-DGG-016051.jpg

They have the emotive talent present in the best actors. Put them into any situation the script calls for, they'll make it better. Annasophia was excellent in "Bridge To Terabithia."

Your picks?

(Yahoo ran an article w/ actresses. Not impressed, but I hope for the best.)

(Andrew Garfield as the lead seems promising)

She's a solid comedian. Doesn't scream "Born to play MJ." She was great as the co-lead in "House Bunny." Little known fact.

Though I'm still a fan of the Emma Stone rumor.

Are they playing that up? I haven't been keeping up with the new movie, but the last trilogy went with the classic "struggling actress" thing for MJ rather than the 80s/90s fashion model.

I prefer the struggling actress thing, I think. The model thing seems too far removed from Peter Parker's world.

Oh yeah.

Guess I'm glad they still didn't play it up much. MJ can still be a hottie and the girl of Peter Parker's dreams without being a supermodel.

Wait, weren't they basing this more on Ultimate Spider-Man or something? Shouldn't MJ's job be "high school student" and all these actresses are too old?

According to Deadline.com, Emma Stone is about to be offered the MJ role:

http://www.deadline.com/2010/10/glees-dianna-agron-georgina-haig-tangled-in-spidey-love-interest-web/

Sony Pictures Entertainment will imminently offer the role of Mary Jane Watson to Emma Stone, who starred for the studio in Zombieland and Easy A. It's another good role for Stone, who is currently shooting the Tate Taylor-directed adaptation of the Kathryn Stockett bestseller The Help for DreamWorks. She plays Skeeter, the college student who comes home determined to expose the class differences between the matriarchs and their house servants in the South in 1962.

That leaves the four other actresses I mentioned yesterday (with the possibility they could widen the search) for the role of Gwen Stacy. Those contenders are Glee's Dianna Agron, Mia Wasikowska, Georgina Haig and Dominique McElligott. Stacy, played in Spiderman 3 by Bryce Dallas Howard, is a plum part for the first installment of the 3D Marc Webb-directed reboot of Spider-Man, because she is the first love interest of the high school-aged Peter Parker, played by Andrew Garfield. Mary Jane--played by Kirsten Dunst in the Sam Raimi-directed trilogy--becomes more pivotal in the later installments of the Spidey saga.

According to Deadline.com, Emma Stone is about to be offered the MJ role:

I think she has the potential to do well in the role. A better fit for the character than Dunst was.

But another casting rumor at the bottom of the article...

Early unconfirmed talk: they want to bring back Venom and they are looking at Philip Seymour Hoffman.Ummm.....yeahbuhwhat?!

There's rumor that Emma Stone was, confusing, cast as Gwen Stacey? I'm thinking it has to be a mistake.

The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed rumors that Emma Stone is joining the cast of Columbia's upcoming Spider-Man reboot. But no, Tiger. It's not quite the jackpot we were expecting. If the news is to be believed, this isn't out new Mary Jane Watson. The popularly red-headed Stone will return to her blonde roots (I read magazines) to play Gwen Stacy alongside Andrew Garfield's Peter Parker/Spider-Man.

Huh?

That seems to be what all the trades are reporting. I guess if they are basing the movie on ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN, Emma Stone fits better with Gwen Stacey personality-wise. I'm having trouble picturing her with blond hair though.

Statement from Mark Webb:

"The chemistry between Andrew and Emma was stunning and made Emma the clear choice. At the heart of the story of Peter Parker is not only the amazing Spider-Man, but also an ordinary teenager who is wondering what he has to do to get the girl. Andrew and Emma will bring everything audiences expect to these roles, but also make them their own. Much to my surprise, it was fun to find out that our choice for Gwen is also a natural blonde.”

It's been nice to see Gwen getting some love in Spider-Man stories lately. For the longest time, she's been mostly nonexistent in Spider-Man lore outside the comic book.

I'm behind the casting choice, she'll do fine.

It's funny, first they cast a blonde (Kirsten) as MJ and a redhead (Bryce) as Gwen, and now they do cast a natural blonde as Gwen but it happens to be someone who's best known as a redhead so some people still complain

I don't really care about hair color that much. I just think she would have been a better fit for MJ's personality. I could see her as the flirtatious party girl from the original comics (an aspect of MJ we didn't really see in the trilogy). I have a hard time seeing her as classic 616 Gwen, but if they happened to go more along the lines of Ultimate Gwen I could maybe see it. I'm still keeping an open mind.

On a sidenote, I'm still utterly baffled by that crazy rumor of Philip Seymour Hoffman as Venom

I have major problems with it either way.

Quesada suggested an alternative but he's not the one that decided to go through with it or actually write it.

Sins Past wasn't exactly a editorially mandated storyline, the blame still squarely goes to JMS for this abortion making it to the illustrated page.

Denis Leary in talks to play Captain George Stacy (http://spinoff.comicbookresources.com/2010/11/17/denis-leary-to-play-captain-stacy-in-spider-man-reboot/)

Denis Leary is in talks to play Gwen Stacy’s father in Columbia Pictures’ new Spider-Man movie, Heat Vision reports.

In Marvel comics continuity, George Stacy is a retired New York City police captain who encourages his daughter’s relationship with Peter Parker and defends Spider-Man from his detractors. He was killed in November 1970′s Amazing Spider-Man #90 while saving a child from falling debris during a battle between Spider-Man and Doctor Octopus, leading Gwen to hate the wall-crawler. The character was played in 2007′s Spider-Man 3 by James Cromwell.

Leary, the 53-year-old comedian turned actor and writer, has starred in the FX series Rescue Me since 2004. He also appeared in HBO’s Recount and provided the voice of Diego in the three Ice Age movies.

He’ll join a cast that includes Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy, Rhys Ifans as an unnamed villain (reported to be the Lizard) and, although still unofficially, Martin Sheen and Sally Field as Ben and May Parker.

Directed by Marc Webb from a screenplay by James Vanderbilt (Zodiac) and Alvin Sargent (Spider-Man 2 and 3), the still-untitled reboot is set to begin filming in December for release on July 3, 2012.
