In a strong argument for the existence of alternate realities, according to this purported 1987 Star Trek: The Next Generation casting sheet Wesley Snipes was once a front-runner to play Geordi La Forge.
...
UPDATE: As for authenticity, LeVar Burton himself (!) confirms:

I'm glad she changed her name to Gates.

That would have been a horrible twist of fate. I can't even imagine what that would have been like.
I think Worf and Geordi would have been combat buddies if that had one that way.

I don't think I could endure Rosalind Chao's acting even for as long as Yar was on.
So that's good, I guess.

Kevin Peter Hall could have made a visually interesting Data as he was about seven feet tall.
Two baseball legends up for the same Star Trek role. Reggie "Mr. October" Jackson, and Willie "Mays" Hayes.

I thought the guy on the Chippendale's calendar was Dwayne Zachemore?

what a different show this would have been. i read that the rocketeer was supposed to be Riker at one point. i wouldn't have minded that change.

I find it equally interesting that Tim Russ, who played Tuvok on Voyager, was up for Geordi's part.

he also had a bit part in, i think, star trek: undiscovered country as a bridge officer.

Ben Murphy would've been great as Ryker. He's as elusive as Robert Denby.

Where's Worf?
Worf was a late addition to the cast.
Believe it or not, James Avery and Michael Dorn were the two finalists for the part.

Tim Russ was in two episodes of DS9 and Generations before he got to Voyager.
You're probably thinking Trek VI because there was an episode of Voyager that featured Tuvok as part of the Excelsior crew under Hikaru Sulu's command.

Tim Russ was actually on an episode of Next Generation. 'Starship Mine'. He played one of a group of mercenaries who were planing to steal the trilithium crystals from the Enterprise's engine while ship was at drydock.
Guinan was almost played by R2-D2.
