I used to be really big on Manga and still am to a certain extent. I've started reading a bit less these days because of laziness and frustration with certain translations. But now I really wanna read some again, so what are some good series that have been translated?

Just for some help, some of my favourites include Fullmetal Alchemist, Death Note, Rurouni Kenshin, but I am pretty open minded, so I'm good for a lot of different types.

Shaman King was fucking awesome.

Yu Yu Hakusho is amazing.

Hikaru No Go is good as well.

I also love One Piece.

Oh yes, I read a bit of Yu Yu Hakusho and One Piece and loved them.

I've been thinking about Claymore after reading the first chapter, thanks for the help, keep them coming, folks!

Inuyasha was enjoyable as well. Bleach, and the Dragon Ball manga.

Eyeshield 21 is probably THE best sports manga I have ever read.

Then you've got Tenjho Tenge, Air Gear, Bakuman, Beelzebub, Dogs: Bullets & Carnage, Zetman, Berserk, Franken Fran and Gintama.

All of those have my 100% seal of approval.

Fully Coolly and Sandland are great as well.

Black Cat is pretty good. I'd recommend Fairy Tail too; similar to One Piece in tone.

I read a bit of Gintama too and liked it and I'll definitely check that out.

I'm honestly slightly afraid of Franken Fran but also intrigued.

It either gets lighter after the first volume or you just grow completely desensitized.

Still not sure which one.

I'm probably gonna check it out if it ever gets translated, just don't have the skills or resources to get the Japanese editions.

Yeah, it can be a real pain in the butt to do it that way. :-?

If you like good ghost stories, perhaps take a look at Mail (http://www.amazon.com/Mail-1-Housui-Yamazaki/dp/1593075669/) by Housui Yamazaki (3 vols. of short stories).

What A Wonderful World (http://www.amazon.com/What-Wonderful-World-Vol-1/dp/1421532212/) by Inio Asano (2 vols. of short stories) has nice slice-of-life stories.

For those seeking a bit more... mature content... I would recommend Berserk and Bokurano. Berserk is over the top fantasy horror. Bokurano is a psychological deconstruction.

Excellent reads. Berserk's a bit long in the tooth but Bokurano, all told, will be 11 volumes.

Hikaru No Go is still my all time favorite manga. The main character is a typical kid who loves sports, but an encounter with a ghost in an old Go board turns his life down different paths.

Oh yes, I remember reading a couple chapters of that, but only a couple.

What's the general tone of the series like? And is it a character driven plot, etc?

And thanks for all the other suggestions, people. Very much appreciated.

It's awesome. The artist for Deathnote is the artist for the book, and Hikaru's funny. Akira is cool as well.

Totally character driven. The development of Hikaru from a somewhat selfish brat into ... something else ... is the whole drive of the series. The art is fantastic, the same guy who does Death Note. And each character is unique and has a backstory and is developed and changes as series continues. Even the minor characters have life.

I read other manga, but this is the king of it for me. While Shonen Jump had the series I subscribed to it JUST to get Hikaru No Go. Once they moved the series to trades only I canceled my subscription. I read the whole thing, but Hikaru No Go was the only one I was willing to pay to read.

Well that definitely sounds up my alley so I'll pick it up sometime soon, thanks for the help.

The Japanese version is finished. The English translation has a way to go yet. I don't read Japanese, and although somebody found me an unofficial English translation I'd rather wait and pay for it to support the effort.

I'm a manga neophyte still. Somewhat enjoyed Akira and Lone Wolf and Cub, but you've probably read both of those. Couldn't get into anything that wasn't "flipped" though, so I've yet to get into Cowboy Bebop or Planetes, both of which I heard were good.

I did dig Abandon the Old in Tokyo though.

I don't mind reading scans. I still buy the books when they come out anyway.

We in the OzBat! household do the regulars: Naruto, Bleach (bleccch after the first story arc), One Piece. We've read Ranma 1/2, and am halfway through Rurouni Kenshin.

But if you want something really oddball and totally different, try Fruits Basket. No killer robots or ninja swords or alien princesses or anything, but genuine emotion on virtually every page. Totally threw me and sucked me in from the first volume.

My fear was that the fan translation wouldn't be as good. I've compared the two a few times, and I lean toward the official version as being much better done. You can see the love put into the fan efforts, but there are often very strange attempts to translate a little too literally. So I stick with the official ones and read the fan ones after as a supplement.

Besides, it gives me something to look forward to. *grin*

I'm trying to think of some other Manga I liked enough to recommend, but my brain is stuck. Um. Yotsuba is fun. Goofy and simple. I got all of Lone Wolf and Cub when Dark Horse reprinted it, and enjoyed it. The violence was a little much at times, but it all served the story. I got a ways into Death Note before I stopped, but I enjoyed what I read. If you like Lone Wolf and Cub, Vagabond is good. There was a really good soccer Manga that I enjoyed, but can't remember the name of it now.

The thing I love most about Manga is the variety of genres. I just love being able to find just about anything in them. My tastes are scattered, Manga caters to many of them.

I think there are 23 volumes, so the English translation is getting close.
