For some reason I remembered that Old Man Logan issue where he tells Hawkeye what really happened to him and why he can't pop his claws. If anyone hasn't read it...
the villains finally got their act together and teamed up and attacked the X-Mansion wanting to kill all the X-Men and the students. So Wolverine realised he has to go in full berserker rage mode in order for them to stand a chance. He absolutely wastes every single villain and he doesn't hold back because holy shit, all the heavy hitters are here and the X-Men are screwed. It seems like the most badass Wolverine action scene ever until Mysterio reveals that he's been manipulating things and Wolverine's actually been killing all the X-Men members. He feels so fucked about what he just did so he lays down on the railroad tracks so a train can run him over. Hawkeye says something like "but you must've known that wouldn't kill you" and Logan says something like "I know, but it'll hurt a lot" and the next page is a full page of the train hitting him.
Holy shit that was tragic. I'm sure there are sadder moments in comics but that's what's in my head at the moment.
the entire debacle that was "death of the New Gods"
sheesh, what a turd.
and we lost Barda, and Mad Harriet, and Granny Goodness, and STOMPA, and Mr. Miracle, and Knockout. . just some great characters thrown in the trash bin for a "new beginning!" that simply didn't work as much as DC thought it would.

Seconded, the really all deserved much better. Scott just practically laid down so he could die.

I teared up a little bit just recently. In 100 Bullets vol 8 "The Hard Way" (The one set in New Orleans)
Please please don't read the spoiler if you haven't read the story.
The ugly jazz player who's only connection to the beautiful young girl who visits the bar is his music. He loses his lips in a bear trap during a scuffle and can no longer blow his horn. With nothing left to live, he allows the protagonist to put him out of his misery. So. Fucking. Heartbreaking.

Aunt may's first death, where Peter started to recite the story she told him.
"and straight on till morning"
Also, there's just something about Kraven's suicide, just the line
"they said my mother was insane"
And last one for now, from Maus, where afetr describing a timeline of the Holocaust and his family, Speigelman mnetions how his mother committed suicide. The reporters later storm him and ask questions, as he slowly turns into a child, When one of the reporters asks him if he wants anything, he screams:
"I want my mommy!" Man, I swear I teared up a little just writing that.

How the hell did a third-rate villain manage to screw with Logan's senses like that? Sounds pretty lame.

He's in the middle of a particularly gruesome storyline in Brightest Day right now. It's actually one of the worthwhile parts of the series thus far.

one particular moment that stuck with me...
in the age of apocalypse storyline for generation next, at the very end when colossus goes back to rescuse husk. and you see her just in a mass of enemies, looking back at colossus as he lets go of the door and leaves her to die. gets me every time.
(and yes, i know that she didn't die, but still. that part blows me away.)

I don't remember if it was explained. And if I really wanna get into it, I'm sure some of the X-Men could've stopped him. I think those were some of the criticisms when it came out. But its a minor issue for me. How do villains even stand a chance against Superman, the greatest hero ever? Or Batman, the ultimate strategist? How come the Flash doesn't win every single fight within a half second?
Mysterio could've been supercharged, Logan's senses could've been messed with, it could've been a totally different Mysterio (this is essentially a 'what if' tale), or some other explanations that may or may not be 'lame' to whoever is reading it. Are these really outside of the realm of possibility in comics?
I'm sure I can poke holes into most of what's mentioned in this thread. But at some point, you have to just let your brain go with it.

The one comic where the main hero dies and they end up cancelling it on you. Only you find out a few years later they're coming back to life and everything is ok now. And the guy who took his place is shuttled off to God knows where, I think maybe he's dead now, not sure.
You know the character I'm talking about, right...??

Death of Douglas Ramsay (Cypher) in New Mutants on two counts.
1) The death itself
2) In the aftermath, Rahne is in the danger room replaying the part of the battle that led to his death. Bobby finds her and tries to tell her that she has to let it go, that it's too late, that there's nothing she can do. She turns to him and says
"I've found seventeen ways I could have saved him? How could I have missed them all?"
I teared up.
3) First death of Jean Grey in X-Men 137

While it gives the story quite a strong finish, every once in a while I couldn't help but wish that BKV didn't come from the Whedon school of thought, which always says to "kill your darlings."
On a separate note, a completely sad comic is Scott Morse's Visitations.

You know, I was almost upset when I read danlob's post, but then I remembered this is Marvel we're talking about. No one stays dead in the Marvel Universe.
As for me, the moment Death throws a loaf of bread at Dream in The Sandman made me sad. It was such a big sister thing to do, and so in character with her.

There are some deaths that the current editorial team want to see stick. Jean Gray is probably one of them. The original Captain Marvel. I think they are going to keep Sentry dead for a long time.
But the X-Men editors said about Nightcrawler at San Diego, "Yes, Nightcrawler is dead and we all know that no character ever comes back from the dead. Coming back from the dead would be silly, right? Right?"
So even the current editorial staff thinks he will be back eventually.

For now. I really doubt Jean will stay dead forever. Of course this just means I need to catch up on my superheroes. Maybe if I get this raise I'm gunning for at work, I'll celebrate by buying completely frivolous fun things like a stack of comic book trades. I need to catch up on X-men and X-factor for sure. I haven't even gotten to Warren Ellis' run, I'm that behind.

The last issue of Azzarello and Risso's Batman: Broken City. Without spoiling too much, Batman solves the murder of a pregnant woman found in the dump, and catches the culprit of who killed a mother and a father, and neither were what he expected.

The ending to Y: The Last Man (Peace)
The page in Identity Crisis (As horrid as that series was) where you just see how wrecked Ralph is. There's emotion and pain there.

The death of Nite Owl I in Watchmen was brutally sad to me.
There were a lot of disturbing or crazy moments in that book (and in comics) but that one made me miserable, possibly because he looked and acted exactly like my grandfather.
Wow, what a depressing thread...
