That's the coolest concept of Medusa since Clash of the Titans! Love the colors.

Oh yes, I love the way it looks.

Love the final look. Would you be interested in coloring some of my sketches just for fun?

Thank you so much. As flattering as coloring your great artwork would be, I wouldn't have time at the moment to really do them justice. I'm only trying to practice color when I can so that I can do it in my own comics when I'm finished drawing the pages and save myself the hassle and money of acquiring a colorist to do it for me.

That's not to say that I won't ask you to throw something my way in the near future though. Every little bit helps. ;)

Love your Peej SaintMike and I enjoy your use of shadows dmh3000!

I don't post here much but here's something I finished last night:

This is a piece of art for an up-coming sketch card set labelled 'Dungeon Dolls.'

Thanks, Cassandra. It was just meant to be a doodle out of boredom is all but thanks for commenting on it.

Now your piece...screams Heavy Metal magazine cover. It's fantastic!

Here's another little scribble I did for fun in-between working on my own stuff. Just a simple Joker pic where I played up the shadows. I tried to give him an TCM noir look:

http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g245/RougeArtist/jokercopy.jpg

I love those old 40s gangster movies so that's what I was going for.

That looks like a moon or spotlight in the background so I would go with a black background around it. Wolfman's muzzle keeps drawing my eye. It's a seems a little big for my tastes. Kind of reminds me of horseman. Drac's got a great hand. I'm guessing that's Igor above Werewolf? Unless I'm mistaking him (and not for Fritz, the first assistant to Dr. Frankenstein) he seems to have a pretty big image for a flunky. I have no idea who the person with glasses is. Pyscho, maybe? I'm guessing it's not Lizzie Borden considering it's a axe. I can't place her so it's throwing off the vibe of monster movies for me.

Looks great! The only thing I might change is the creature from the black lagoon in top right. That pose makes him look more disinterested than menacing. Like he's in the picture grudgingly. But even that isn't a deal-breaker.

@Jim... you're right, it IS Norman Bates indeed! (I'll have to punch up the old lady wig I guess... I wanted it to look like it was falling off of poor Norman's head)... the knife was also a hint (think showers!!!)... lol! Yeah, that's Igor as well... a great character who got ignored to much I think. btw... that Drac hand took FOREVER!!!!!!!

@Steve, you're the second person to mention the creature not looking as if he's "part" of the image... so I think I'm going to rework him... try to bring him more "into" the image. Thanks!

Very good page. But I have to ask... does one of the guys get fresh with her?

Heh. Well, she is biologically female, but she is actually originally a he. It's a body-swap story where the girl above usually wears sneakers, jeans & hoodies but for reasons not mentioned here, goes through a make-over. And while the guys here don't get frisky with her there are some awkward situation that end up taking place.

Am I the only one confused about mini-capes? Yeah, I guess they don't block the woman's arse so people can get a nice view for fan service, but I don't know, to me it just seems pointless, like why not just cut it out all together? As for why I drew one, I figured a cape needed to be there and I didn't want to make it too long.

Pages 2 and 3 of Hollow. I don't remember if I ever posted these. Penciled by Duncan Eagleson, painted by me. Larime did the letters; he letters stuff that sits above the art, and I letter stuff that's integrated with it. (Though I think L and Duncan do t-shirts and movie posters in the art.)

I don't remember if these were side by side; most pages that share a theme and show up side by side have a background that spans both pages. (I consider what's behind the panels to be wasted space if it's not painted, too, though sometimes stark black or white is okay if it's atmosphere. May as well use it to set the ambiance.)

Neither; he draws with his mouth (his hands and feet don't move as his limbs are locked in place from the elbows and knees down). He's doing the second issue from here on out, this is penciled by an artist who worked on Sandman. I paint, but I'm legally blind, so I work with my face a few inches from the tablet or the screen.

Pages 22 and 23 of hollow. Penciled by Duncan Eagleson, word balloons (except for one) and knocking lettering by L, paint (including splatters that look like frames) and lettering integrated into the coloring by me. I also tweaked the layout and flipped some stuff. I wish I had the original pencils for this, I think L does.

Normally I'd object to the objectification of Andi in a scene like this, but there's a point. Some of what she's gone through is drawn from some of my past.

http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/cc108/reverendsmooth/page22small.jpghttp://i215.photobucket.com/albums/cc108/reverendsmooth/page23small.jpg

I'm reposting stuff to try to enthuse myself over it. I'm aware that these pages are incredibly busy, and a lot of the text is Andi's stream of consciousness over it all. I also think these and two other pages are what landed us the contract, and they are what caught the eye of a few publishers.

Istra consults with a patient. The colors in the glare that backlights her were picked for a reason. I believe these are Larime's favorite pages from Issue one. We actually never agree on which pages we like the best, I noticed, except for the darkroom pages, which we both like.

@Rev: Those are beautiful. I love the style --- the colors have a painterly, watercolor feel, and I'm always a sucker for realistic pencils. My favorite part? Definitely the "glare backlight" and how the colors bleed into the tails of her word balloons. Keep up the amazing work!!!

Archaia is going to be publishing it-- print for the trade, digital for the individual issues because of Diamond's new rules made it impossible for them to be carried. Larime currently does the pencils (issue two on, I am finishing issue one's colors) and some of the lettering (word bubbles, sound effects). I ink, paint, add in text that blends with the art, and design the covers (fonts, etc). We share some of the layout stuff. It should be out within a year, if I remember the release date right.

Good work Jim.. but I don't know if the 911 service was available during the 1970's. Did you check that out? (I only mention it... because you have the character talking about the 70's... and then in the very next panel, you state about a call to 911).

Keep at it bud!

Thanks for the props, folks.

Rev - again, I should post the top panel without word balloons. I still think it's cooler that way.

Jim - I might need to change the wording a bit for clarity. The new family moved in in the 1970s and the murders took place in the 80's as 'the last big thing'. This is why it's nice to have a second set of eyes to ask me just what in the heck I was thinking! :)

Part of a submission I did a few years ago for a publisher who wanted to see what my style would look under traditional inks. I didn't get the gig, but they did say they liked it.

http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/cc108/reverendsmooth/gijoe1final.jpg

Unfortunately, the slightly rougher style is just not something that many publishers want to take a chance on when it comes to mainstream properties, even if the editors personally like it. I can understand some of the caution, since comics operate on such a narrow edge of profit, and they don't want to mess with a licensed property. At the same time, I think it sells fans a little short.

So, if you plan on coloring comics in a style that deviates from the norm, be aware that while some publishers may want to give you work, they may hesitate (or pass, or simply not have projects where they think you'll 'fit'), especially if you aren't already a name with a fanbase. The airbrush style is proven to sell, so they prefer that.

Anyway, this was a scene at twilight or night, hence the darker tones and the lights on helmet dude's helmet.

GrayHaven Comics and The Gathering is looking for some new artistic blood. Our four issue of the acclaimed anthology is at the printers now and we'll be publishing 9 more issues by the end of 2012.

While submissions for new writers are currently closed we can always use a few more artists to help ease the workload and help keep our deadlines.

Each issue of The Gathering features a specific theme: Hope, Romance, Western, Horror, Sci Fi, etc. We feature many different styles of story and art but do tend to shy away from the super hero type.

If you're interested, please check out our website at www.grayhavencomics.com where you can find out much more about The Gathering. You can also email me direct at gatheringanthology@hotmail.com to submit.

While we're still at the non paying phase of our existence (booo) creators do own their material in full, our print run averages about 1500 per issue and we have a heavy con presence so your work will be seen, and pro contributors such as Gail Simone, Michael Lapinski, Len Wallace and Sterling Gates have contributed to The Gathering so your work will be featured along side professional creators.

Drop me a line if you're interested.

Good work Jim... but I DO have to say... since I was just in Boston, and didn't see a single house (or yard) like this... you might want to either change that to a suburb of Boston (Sharon, Danvers, whatever), or ref the architecture of Boston's residences. First page: The house doesn't look like a box, and needs to be two-point--at least--perspective.

Second page: First panel needs a two point perspective. That last panel really, really needs a three point perspective.

Thanks! Huge compliment, I'm a big fan of Ditko's art--but more influenced lately by his influence--Mort Meskin.

I'm trying to make the art as '1939' as possible--since that's when the story's set. Looked at a bunch of Jordi Bernet, Noel Sickles, Alex Toth and 1940's Meskin 'Gangster' stuff before I started.

Just go in google maps and punch up any major city. Zoom in close on an area (close enough to see streets) and then drag the little orange man icon on the left over the map. Whatever streets are viewable will be highlighted in blue. Drop the little man on a street and you'll get a 360 ground level view. It's a lifesaver if you need to draw a place you've never seen.

That's looking good, do you have more about it on Deviantart? Thanks. Not yet. Did a 16 pager in 1990, 30 page in '92 that I lost (both) when a friend died who was storing them, and a 22 pager in '96 that I never lettered, but I'm starting it from scratch for the next one. Have a couple of multi-issue story arcs plotted, and I'll set up my own site around the time I finish the next first issue. Description from my Twitter: "Ditkoesque Punk Rock version of The Shadow, with Dr. Strange tendencies. Also Reincarnated Ancient Sumerian GOD." I'd add Moorcock's Eternal Champion to the mix.

Basically, poor, poor David Regent finds out he has super-powers when given John Dee's Magic Spectacles by a girl he's had elaborate dreams of his whole life (who turns out to be the goddess Inanna). He's told he's the reincarnation of Ninhurta (rather like the Sumerian Thor--kind of a 'security chief' for the Lords of Order) when he just wants to beat up bad guys--but he keeps being dragged into potentially world-ending battles between good and evil--with other ancient gods of both varieties waking up and realizing who they were. The series will be called Dark Vs. Light

Thanks.

Light

I really like that Dark vs. Light logo.
And your Creeper is simply amazing.

Thanks, the logo is a first draft. Need to recenter the letters...

And...thanks. My favorite Ditko character. I only wish DC would quit writing EVERY Ditko character as Rorschach/an Objectivist Fascist. I'd write Jack Ryder as sympathetic and under siege by his crazy, Randian, cluelessly Social Darwinist alter ego.

Whenever anyone asks me if I can ink my own stuff... I always say "it'll be reproduceable... but it won't be pretty"

I know I hate inking my own pencils... it never turns out the way I want it to. So I leave it up to those that KNOW how to use the inks. Everyone involved is usually MUCH happier!! (I know I am!)

Great expression you go here on ol' Fisk face.. my ONE suggestion, would have been to make his hand holding the stogie larger... the hand outstretched should be able to cover the majority of your face... right now.. his hand looks a bit... dainty. Thanks, JT. His hand's not outstretched per se; I wasn't going for dynamic perspective at all.But yeah, he usually has really large hands anyway.

Ouch Jim... sorry bud, but this chick's got a butt of absolute diamond... it isn't affected at ALL by the fact she's sitting on a fairly sturdy desk chair. There's a slight angle to the seat... but not to HER seat... Sorry... that butt thing just SHOUTED out to me... so had to speak my mind.

When I work on a picture sometimes I get so involved and wanting to finish it I miss errors or things that could be adjusted to make a better picture. For me, I think the legs going up from the chair set looks a little weird but not horrible. But I didn't really notice it until I inked the page. And I wasn't totally sure what to do with her left hand. So it looks a wee bit wonky to me.

Jim.... start varying your angles a little more bud. You've got (what appears to be) 4 extreme bird's eye views on this one page alone... no worm's eye views... it's like you're starting to repeat yourself with very "comfortable" angles. You've got to mix it up more. Just for example... panel 5 (I think it's panel 5... I can't tell if you're trying to create separation with the shadows and word bubbles in Panel 2), you could have done an extreme close up of the feet of the foreground characters, while showing the bg characters falling out of the window... it would have changed the pacing (and the angle) a little for you. Play around with the shots. Don't become a "three shot" director with your panels.... get creative... get inventive... go nuts! They are going to impact your story... as much as the plot and the art.

But definitely keep at it!

I knew the 2nd panel would have a lot of writing as the heroine goes off but I wasn't sure how much. I had an idea but I didn't pick the exact words until I actually typed it. I'll probably go back and fill in some backgrounds so it's not so empty.

dmh300, how are you doing your inks? I'm almost getting the impression that the pencils are turned from a grayscale scan to a black and white scan. Or that maybe the resolution you are scanning at doesn't seem quite high enough. The inked edges don't seem quite smooth and fluid to me.

I already made a new thread specifically for promotion (http://www.606studios.com/bendisboard/showthread.php?215011-shameless-I-got-a-Threadless-design-in-the-running) of this upstairs, so rather than start a duplicate on the Gailbo-mo-section of the forums, I figured I'd just mention this here:

Got a Threadless design in the running (http://www.threadless.com/submission/412514/Filled_With_Whimsy). On day 1 of 7 for promotion/scoring. Please go and vote on it, and maybe it'll get printed. Thanks, everyone!

That looks like a really hard head angle to draw, Arion, and it came out great!

Thanks !

Not bad for a sketch Jim... careful though. Her breasts are sitting JUST barely above her belly button (they need to be higher on her rib cage)... and it looks as if you sort of lost your way below her hips... actually.. she doesn't really have hips (or a buttocks) and it's just lines down to you go off paper. Again... it's a sketch... yeah.. but these little tweaks are important, so that when you go to apply something to a more permanent image, you avoid those pitfalls.

And naturally... I'm gonna make a comment about... those eyebrows. Spend some time drawing just some eyes and eyebrows on a sheet... and work that. The "eyes are the soul"... and can actually make or break a piece! (IMO)...

Always just my opinion... I am no paragon of "all knowing sage" or anything..

Just sayin....

Thanks for the feedback, Jim.
The pic does fall apart a bit at the bottom. I wanted to draw something tonight but I wasin a weird time frame. I was looking to kill about 20 minutes of time before starting supper tonight. I was working from a pic of Bianca Beachampe who's fantastic at times with great poses and faces. My pict was suppose to be a copy of her photo but morphed into my sketch. The face is probably a little too big on the skull as well. I may ink this so some fixes are in order if I do that.

Did another Threadless design, this time based on a comic I once did which contained a widely-used pun taken to it's logical conclusion (http://bit.ly/JjxUG7).

What if the JSA were made up of the heroes when they first appeared in comics?? I'm talking original appearances!

This was just for fun!

Danielle Corsetto over at Girls With Slingshots (http://www.girlswithslingshots.com/) put out a call for guest strips. She needed 5...she got over 100. :Panic:
You can see all the submissions she got up on Flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/dcorsetto/sets/72157629719340340/with/7193880200/

This was the one I sent in:

Didn't make the cut, but I had fun doing it.

Hello you talented, talented people. Some of you have done work with us in the past. Others only know me as the guy who pops in to plug the comics. Well now we needs some artists. Expanding the line and launching a lot of titles is great but we need some talented artists to help bring some of these stories to life.

Right now we're looking at getting a couple more artists for our Western and Romance issues. 2-5 pages each, B&W with deadline being end of July. Also going to need artists for True Ghost stories (deadline in September) If you're interested email me at gatheringanthology@hotmail.com

Good to see you're still working on these Jim. I will say... don't try to fake the perspective shots so much... it doesn't work for you. It's long, it's tedious, and it sucks to have to do... but well done perspective shots will just enhance your overall image. I say this, because in your second panel... the stair's banister rail... and the angle of the roof line, are WAY too divergent. Things like that (which seem minor)... can affect the overall look of an image!

Just cautionary words, my friend!

Mine are perspective shots. I just suck at them.

Modeled this today in Autodesk Maya. Gonna UV it in a few days and then I can texture it. Gonna have a lot of fun making textures for this. No longer will I be limited to the Lego minifig parts that Lego makes. No Character is out of my Reach now! MUWHAHAHAH!

There's a simple thing you can do to improve them no end - decide where your vanishing point is going to be and line everything up to it with a ruler. In that panel the vanishing point would be somewhere close to the centre, but I can tell by eye that even the wall edges aren't lined up to the same point, let alone that desk (or whatever it is) against the right hand wall.
