View Full Version : Brisner Award Nominations: Biggest WTF Moment of the Year

A "WTF" moment makes you wonder what the "heck" they were thinking. This could be due to poor writing, weird character decisions, or otherwise just straight up insane stuff.

It needs to have taken place in a comic over the past 1.5 years (Jan 2009-July 2010). Note that it doesn't have to be a comic: those "He Aced It!" ads would be fair game.

Please specify title of comic, issue #, and a brief (hide spoilers) summary and synopsis of what made it so WTF-worthy.

Please avoid any creator bashing or this thread will get locked and bannings will be handed out by the mods. You can say you didn't understand why something happened without insulting the author.

Nominations can be from any comic from any company. The top five nomination vote-getters will move on to the voting category.

Let's go.

The issue of ASM where they reveal Peter didn't really get drunk (I'll look it up if it wins).

The Colgate "He Aced It" ads, since I put that one into my own head.

The issue of Secret Six where Ragdoll speculated on having sex with butterflies.

OM NOM NOM NOM NOM.

Also, Arsenal can't get it up, then goes and beats up hobos while clutching a dead cat.

A few of us are still convinced his attempt based on the panel was to then rape the dead cat. It's become an joke meme for us.

Seconded for Shed.

That was depressing, and not in the way I normally like.

I thought that was how the cat died...?

Also, the "You fail law forever" moments from Daredevil and Green Arrow, where the writers apparently forgot that a judge can't just decide he doesn't like the jury's verdict and convict the person anyway.

I'll second the Ragdoll butterfly moment.

I have to agree on The Rise of Arsenal #3. No issue has ever done so much damage to one character like this one has. I understand the grief of Roy after all that has happened to him but this issue gives no credit to his growth as a character and what he has overcome in his life. His actions are so all over the place that it doesn't feel like Roy at all.

Lady blaming Superman for her husband dying of cancer - Superman 700.

Everything in Superman 701.

The Reveal of Twilight as well as what Buffy does when she finally confronts him in Buffy The Vampire Slayer.
The explanation of what Twilight actually is still is odd and convoluted.

The plethora of Lizard rape in Amazing Spider-Man: the Shed arc

Roy Harper's patheticness in Rise of Arsenal #3 but the whole series can get nominated

Thirded. Whedon REALLY needed to be the one writing the actual reveal.

Jog my memory on the DD moment.

Daredevil was defending two guys accused of blowing up the tenement that Bullseye destroyed. The jury acquitted them due to lack of evidence, but the corrup Osborn-appointed judge overruled the verdict and sent them to prison.

Wait, seriously using a cat as a club?

I'm no legal expert, but I think there are situations where a judge may overrule a jury's verdict.

I didn't read that comic. Why was Osborn appointing judges?

Because he's eeeeeeeevil.

A judge can reverse a jury's verdict if the conviction is improper, but they can never impose a conviction.

The end of Wolverine Origins Reckoning arc.

So the main driving plot of the series for many issues was trying to find a way to stop Romulus once and for all. After a complicated plan involving Wolverine tricking Romulus with a fake plan, it all comes down to using Cloak to trap Romulus in the Darkforce dimension.

That's it?:-?
What was the point of tricking him with a fake plan? Why did it take so many issues for something that simple to happen? Wolverine and Cloak had an opportunity to do it earlier than they did. Why didn't they? Do they really think he'll never get out?

For just straight up insane stuff that was quite good, the issue of Unwritten with:

Cute, children's story type talking animals with murderous intentions was brilliant.

As well as for good WTF?! the ending of the second and third issues of Daytripper as you begin to go, "Oh, wait...um..." (Those who have read it will know what I mean.)
