With the exception of attending the local Twin Cities convention Fallcon last year I haven't been to any cons. I'd like to attend at least one of the bigger conventions next year. Any suggestions? San Diego? I'm really only interested in comics and I understand that SDCC has kind of grown out of proportion for that. I've heard good things about Emerald City and Heroescon. So, what do you guys think?

Baltimore is great!
John, will you be attending Baltimore again this year? If so, will you be doing that convention ad / interview thing for the con on Wordballoon like you are doing for SDCC?

No Baltimore this year, cause it's too close to other cons I'm doing this summer and early fall, but I loved going last year and will return in the future.
Baltimore, Heroes, Emerald City, and Wonder Con are the best , it terms of big name guests, but a more easy going atmospshere.
I do think NYCC and C2E2 are just a few notches below San Diego as far as being BIG COMIC NEWS SHOWS , but not as insanely HUGE as SDCC.

if you are into art, Emerald City can't be beat.
but I prefer smaller cons anyway.

Dragon*Con all the way.
I went to Emerald City this year and also to the Portland ComiCon and though I had fun, neither one holds a candle to Dragon*Con.

C2E2 was a lot of fun this year and was pretty much just a comics show. Not a lot of media present at all. The dealers area could have used some beefing up but the panel selection was fantastic and the artists alley was great.

If things go like last year, I'm guessing fan expo in Toronto may have some big announcements.

I've been to San Diego a couple of times. It can be hell at times but so much fun.
The new Long Beach Comic-Con is great! I really hope it grows.
I've been to Wizard World LA (now Anaheim Comic-Con), it's decent.
One year, I'll go to Emerald City.

What do you like about Dragon Con?
It's a 3 day comic, sci-fi, and fantasy party. There are excellent panels, lots of guests, things to look at literally every second, and several great vendors rooms. I've always felt like I've gotten my moneys worth at the end, and I'm not sure I've felt that way after the other two cons.
I'm actually pretty bummed I'm not going this year. :(

So no San Diego for you?

In terms of "pure" comic conventions (as opposed to ones that don't focus mainly on comics) I'd say C2E2 and Heroes Con are hard to beat.
Mid Ohio Con has also been picking-up steam lately, and the newly revamped/relaunched Detroit Fanfare looks to be pretty promising, too...
SINcerely,
Dirk Manning
