As happy as I am for LOST getting its nominations I think I'm more excited to see Chandler and Britton getting best actor/actress nominations.

I wish Party Down and Community would've got some love. Party Down should've been able to fill up the comedy guest star spots. I wish Zac Gilford would've got a best guest actor spot as well.

One nod for Treme and none for Justified (that I saw anyway). Bah!

Mister Mets

I'm consistently convinced that someone should be inelligible for an acting Emmy after they've already won (for the same character in the same category.)

YAY for Modern Family, Kyle Chandler & Connie Britton!!!

I agree completely, this would certainly shake things up.

YAY for Modern Family, Kyle Chandler & Connie Britton!!!

Ed O'Neill still got screwed. But I am really glad to see Larry David nominated (after a recent absence from the nominees.) The scene where he briefly played George in the Seinfeld reunion was exceptional.

Good to see all the nominations for Lost and Glee. But where is the Nomination for Community for best comedy series??

HeroBoy

Community not getting a nod for best directing in a comedy series for the Modern Warfare episode is a crime, but not shocking.

The nomination for Juliet from 'Lost' has to be for last season, not the one that just ended. I think she's the first actress to be nominated from that series.

Sad to see Community not get a nom, but The Office get another one (I still like the Office, but it's starting to become a shell of what it once was).

It's a shame Dean Norris wasn't recognized, but I'll be happy with an Aaron Paul win.

Huzzah for John Slattery!

What the fuck is You Don't Know Jack? Apparently it's got Pacino and John Goodman.

Kevorkian biopic. Both actors were great in it, especially Pacino, who finally remembered to lose himself in a role.

I'm surprised that NBC, the low man on the totem pole ratings-wise, has so many noms. I'm also surprised that USA, which features some of the best shows on tv, has so few.

I'm a bit surprised it didn't garner a writing nom at least. It boasted some pretty sharp dialogue all year.

Let's do this. It's not even 10:30 and my mailbox is empty. My picks:

Outstanding Comedy Series

30 Rock (NBC) - As long as this show exists, it's never going to not be this for me (assuming there isn't a disastrous drop-off in quality). It's as close to a perfect sitcom as you'll ever find without wandering into "take yourself seriously" territory.

Outstanding Drama Series

Lost (ABC) - Mad Men is excellent, True Blood is more engaging than it has any right to be on paper, but the final season of Lost (with one glaring exception) was easily the best television that happened this year.

Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Series

The Daily Show with Jon Stewart (Comedy Central) - A nightly deconstruction of how our news media (not just Fox, mind you) has completely lost its shit. Funny even when it's being preachy. I'd love to be able to pick Conan's Tonight Show, but I just can't when the Daily is still here.

Outstanding Reality - Competition Program

I didn't watch a single one of these this year. No love for the Real World/Road Rules Challenge?

Outstanding Made for Television Movie
Outstanding Miniseries

It's becoming an annual tradition that I not even know what any of these are.

Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series

Alec Baldwin, 30 Rock (NBC) - The most loaded category, where no one could possibly win that would either surprise or upset me. Going with Baldwin, though, who keeps adding facets to Jack Donaghy long after he could have stopped and still won awards for his performance.

Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series

Amy Poehler, Parks and Recreation (NBC) - Not actually going to happen, but dammit, I love Poehler and I think that this show is far and away her best work. I actually buy into the naive earnestness of Leslie Knope.

Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series

Jon Hamm, Mad Men (AMC) - He's pretty outstanding. I have a man-crush.

Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series

Julianna Margulies, The Good Wife (CBS) - Not thrilled with my options, I pick Margulies because she almost made me stick with "The Good Wife" in spite of it being kind of an awful show.

Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series

Neil Patrick Harris, How I Met Your Mother (CBS) - Everyone loves Barney, and I'm part of everyone.

Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series

* Jane Lynch, Glee (Fox) - As a show, Glee is up-and-down. As Sue Sylvester, though, Lynch is always perfect.

Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series

Terry O'Quinn, Lost (ABC) - Would be close, except that Terry O'Quinn played two characters over the course of a season without once letting one bleed into the other. This will be the most well-deserved Emmy in a long time, if not ever.

Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series

Sharon Gless, Burn Notice (USA) - Mostly strong field here, but I like Gless just a little more as an actress.

Outstanding people a Miniseries or Movie

Skipping due to the afore-mentioned cluelessness.

Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series

Will Arnett, 30 Rock (NBC) - I'll admit that I flipped a coin, but won't tell who my b-choice was. Arnett always adds to the show as Jack's evil equal.

Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series

Betty White, Saturday Night Live (NBC) - Kristen Chenoweth was adorable and hilarious in Glee...but Betty White rode into SNL and blew almost the entirety of that show's last ten seasons out of the water.

Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series

John Lithgow, Dexter (Showtime) - Could you imagine anyone else in that role?

Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series

Lily Tomlin, Damages (FX) - I'm totally in the bag for Lily Tomlin anytime any nomination comes her way. There was no way to be objective.

Outstanding Animated Program

South Park (Comedy Central) - South Park had something of a renaissance season, hitting some amazing episodes long after I thought it had settled into a rut (an entertaining rut, but a rut nonetheless).

*Skipping a section due to lack of watching enough to take a stab at it*

Outstanding Voice-Over Performance

Hank Azaria, The Simpsons (Fox) - Anyone who thinks otherwise isn't paying attention that man's work on that show.

Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series

Glee - "Wheels," Paris Barclay (Fox) - Captured everything right about this show and floated right over anything wrong with it.

Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series

Lost - "The End," Jack Bender (ABC) - Loved it. So there.

Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series

The Office - "Niagara," Greg Daniels, Mindy Kaling (NBC) - Incredibly funny, human, and perfect episode. Instantly convinced me not to give up on this series.

Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series

* Lost - "The End," Damon Lindelof, Carlton Cuse (ABC) - Screw what questions didn't get answered, this built to a big climax and a very satisfying ending.

Outstanding Writing for a Variety, Music or Comedy Series

The Colbert Report (Comedy Central) - Constantly finding ways to breathe life into what should by all rights be a one-note gag? Worth a statue at the very least. Plus, the Olympic episodes were epic.

(and then some stuff at the end, which I also didn't watch enough of)

I'm a bit surprised it didn't garner a writing nom at least. It boasted some pretty sharp dialogue all year.

I was hoping for a Goggins supporting nod.

Yeah the writing was very good too.

I also wish Community would get some love.

Very happy for Lost getting best drama, directing, writer and the acting nods. Fox, Emerson and O'Quinn all really brought it this year. Don't care if they win, just getting nominated is great. Mitchell seems like a place filler. Would have liked Ab Aeterno to represent instead of The End, but whatever.

I'm probably most excited about Conan being the only network talk show nominated--I hope he wins.

Hope NPH wins supporting comedic actor.

Wiig nominated for SNL? Ugh.

It'd be awesome if Betty White won.

I enjoy Modern Family, and True Blood, but I don't think either should have been nominated. True Blood at times seems more kitschy than drama. And Modern Family is pretty formulaic. In my opinion of course.

I think Alec Baldwin deserves the comedic Best Actor award. He's consistently at the top.

Gregory Itzin played his character to perfection on 24.

I'm also disappointed with the lack of Community love.

No John Noble is a damn shame. But depending on if they would have put him in lead or supporting, he may have had a tough time winning. Definitely deserves a nom though.

My opinions on the nominations:

The good:
Lots of love for Lost, Mad Men, and Modern Family. Conan's Tonight Show gets a nomination as a giant fuck you to Leno. The question is, can he appear on television to receive the award?

The bad:
No nominations for Community, and only Sound Editing for Fringe. Two of the strongest shows last season got completely shafted. John Noble gave some of the strongest dramatic performances in the history of mankind this season, and gets ignored because the Emmys seem to only be able to support one sci-fi show and Lost took that spot this year. Also, Party Down deserved something.

The ugly:
Jon Cryer gets nominated again, and Two and a Half Men gets several other nominations. Also, Jim Parsons gets nominated for playing the most irritating character on television.

I think Jim Parsons plays his character brilliantly and deserves the award on a real good show. While I think Baldwin is fantastic, he doesn't just deserve it every year.

Jon Cryer is a good comedy actor but gets this nod because that show is the #1 comedy on TV. I don't agree with those tactics but its like that for these awards

Damages won't be back for a fourth season on FX, but there is a possibility it could be picked up by Direct TV. "We just will have to see," Close says. "I'm certainly up for it."

Conan O’Brien gets shafted again, Emmy Category won’t be televised

(WIREUPDATE) — Former staff members of the "Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien" have been informed that their possible Emmy win will not be televised on primetime television.

Two weeks ago when the Emmy nominations were announced one of the most shocking announcements came in the "Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Series" category. The now cancelled "Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien" was nominated in the category, while the same program with host Jay Leno was snubbed.

"Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien" writer Dean Cole tweeted the staff were informed their Emmy category won’t be televised during the primetime program. "NOT ‘NBC’ but the powers that be has sent us an email saying that the category we are nominated for will not be televised this year! really?"

Conan O’Brien’s final broadcast as "Tonight Show" host was on January 22, 2010.

Conan shafted from Emmy telecast? Not exactly ...

Sixteen hours ago, one of Conan O'Brien's writers Tweeted that they received a dispatch saying their Emmy category would not be shown during NBC's primetime telecast.

"NOT 'NBC' but someone with power has kicked us in the nuts again! ... wow, unbelievable! but the powers that be has sent us an email saying that the category we are nominated for will not be televised this year! really?" wrote Deon Cole.

The Tweet set off a couple outraged blog posts, with surely more to come, about how O'Brien is getting shafted from the Emmys, along with some darkly conspiratorial speculation.

"How is this NOT something [Jay Leno is] orchestrating?" wrote one.

Here's the deal. Cole's Tweet is perfectly accurate ... yet there's some key context missing.

According to a TV Academy spokesperson, before last year's Emmys, the Academy and the guilds agreed that the writing and directing categories for outstanding variety, musical or comedy (or "VCM") series would alternate each year from the primetime telecast to cut down on the show's length. Last year, the VCM writing/directing series slots were in the CBS telecast; this year they will move to the Creative Arts Awards, which will also be televised, on Saturday, Aug. 21.

So, yes, the winner for outstanding VCM writing will not be presented live in primetime Emmys, a category for which O'Brien's "Tonight Show" is nominated.

BUT...

The overall outstanding VCM series category (the big one, in other words) for which O'Brien is nominated, the one that drew all the headlines when the Emmy nominations were announced ... that is IN the Emmy telecast.

So, really, no conspiracy. (And, frankly, no real story, either, but needed to kill time before ratings came out anyway).

I was disappointed that Kyle Chandler & Connie Britton didn't win. Maybe they'll get it next year for the final season, and maybe the show will finally get a best drama nom/win. I also really thought that O'Quinn deserved to win this year.
